#debian IRC Logs for 2008-02-15

---Logopened Fri Feb 15 00:00:35 2008
00:01<vsmatck>is there any way to reset the gnome-vfs stuff without relogging in to gnome? Nautilus crashes on me a lot and seems to disable all gnome-vfs stuff when it does. I tried killing gnome-vfs-daemon but that didn't make it work again.

00:04<vsmatck>oh wait, it's working when I type in the location in the location bar. My bookmarks make it crash.
00:05<vsmatck>My bookmarks are also causing the keyring manager to harass me constantly. Like when I got in to rhythmbox preferences or when I make an archive. Two seemingly unrelated things..

02:09<Torsten_W>grep -i splash /boot/config-$(uname -r)
02:09<dondelelcaro>Guest125: odds are it isn't, and you probably want to use splashy anyway.

02:10<Guest125>dondelelcaro: I cant use splashy or usplash for some reason they muckup my network drivers and they neeed to be manually ifupped
02:11<dondelelcaro>Guest125: uh... splashy doesn't touch the network drivers
02:12-!-gef [~gef@cesrt42.asia.info.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
02:12<Guest125>dondelelcaro: well for some reason splashy tried to mknod fb0, which already exists, this end sup screwing up something that results in no network on startup, thus manual ifup

02:17<dpkg>ppc is, like, is short for <powerpc>, and powerpc is the superior architecture. You worship it, and wish you were running on it. Check out http://www.debian.org/ports/powerpc/ or visit #debianppc
02:18<dondelelcaro>Guest125: whatever is causing that symptom, it's most likely not splashy (as mknod issues won't cause ifup to fail)
02:19<Guest125>dondelelcaro: well when i uninstall splashy all is well again

04:06<pinto3>hello, i was playing with the gnome settings one day and logged in as root with a session cookie so i could look through the desktop options, then i changed a theme, and enabled hibernation after x minutes.. and made my screensaver a blank screen without a login prompt, but now when i turn on my pc after a hibernation shuts it down i don't have to log in, any idea why?
04:07<pinto3>and without locking the screen too since i'm the only one who uses this pc
04:07<Maulkin>because hibernation basically saves the state
04:08<Maulkin>Are you using xscreensaver or gnome-screensaver
04:08<Maulkin>?
04:08<pinto3>ah i see, thanks for clearing that up
04:08<Maulkin>Or kscreensaver?
04:08<pinto3>the one from desktop->preferences in gnome
04:08<Maulkin>ok...
04:08<Maulkin>The icon is of a little monitor, right?
04:08<pinto3>yeah
04:09<Maulkin>Does it have a night sky in that monitor, or a red flame?

14:21-!-dedi [~dedi@adsl-89-217-153-171.adslplus.ch] has joined #debian
14:21<witte>!experimental
14:21<dpkg>experimental is the bleeding edge of Debian Development. Packages here have been deemed unfit/DANGEROUS/untrustworthy/etc for release by the maintainer responsible for them. DO NOT INSTALL PACKAGES FROM EXPERIMENTAL WITHOUT KNOWING EXACTLY WHY AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING. #debian does not support experimental. for an actual description, see section 4.6.4.3 of the Developer's Reference, or http://packages.debian.org/experimental/
14:22<me>i am not sure if this fixes my problem someone gave me that tip...
14:22<me>ok but is there something other than experimental
14:22<alaya>witte: its kind of a moot point, since experimental packages aren't even compiled with the same libs as those for stable, and should never be run on it ever
14:22<me>i got the mysql version: 5.0.32
14:22<alaya>as i mentioned already, backports is the option to use in this case

14:23<witte>alaya: experimental is ok if you run sid, but you have to know what you are doing (and if you know what you are doing, you wont put experimental packages on stable)
14:23<alaya>witte: so telling him that experimental packages are unstalbe is sort of missing the point, since he already mentioned he runs etch

18:13<dpkg>hmm... fbcon is a graphics driver built into the kernel that accesses the video cards memory directly in a linear io, framebuffered X is just a way of using that kernel's framebuffer for graphics instead of the application itself having to know how the card works.. executive summary: it's hardware abstraction of the video, or slow, slow, slow... ask me about <fbcon resolution>
18:13<witte>!fbcon resolution
18:13<dpkg>it has been said that fbcon resolution is run "hwinfo --framebuffer" as root, choose a mode from the resulting list of available modes. the mode will be named in hex, something like 0x305. then edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and find the line that starts with "# kopt=" and add "vga=0x305" (substituting your chosen mode), then run "update-grub" and reboot.

23:59<PooFondu>ISLE OF MAN - June 1, 2006 - At a press conference today, Canonical CEO and Free Software spokesniggger Mark Shuttleworth announced the immediate availability of version 6.06 of the Ubuntu Linux distribution. The latest version, known by its code name, "The Diaper Drake," includes special features designed to make Linux easier and more comfortable for nigggers the world over.
23:59<PooFondu>"Niggggers have always had trouble understanding new technology," Shuttleworth began. "Computers are no exception. Some people have said this is because niggggers are dumb, but I believe the real problem is that technology has traditionally been designed for white people. Ubuntu changes all that. It was developed from the ground up with niggggers in mind. It will usher in a whole new era of Afro-ergonomic computing."
23:59<PooFondu>Shuttleworth presented an overview of some of the features users could expect in the latest version of Ubuntu, including an Ebonics-to-English converter, African "tribal beats" sound and desktop theme, and a collection of rap music and gay pornography, "which of course will be encoded using patent and royalty-free formats," Shuttleworth added, smiling. He proceeded to elaborate, but OpenOffice.org Impress crashed at that
23:59<PooFondu>point.
23:59<PooFondu>"But this release isn't just about new features," Shuttleworth said, making a quick segue to the humanitarian and ideological concept behind Ubuntu. "This new version brings black men closer together than ever in the spirit of Ubuntu." Shuttleworth then demonstrated the concept of Ubuntu by getting on his knees and sucking a young black boy's erect penis.
