01:55<phillipsjk>I think the Video card my be competing with the sound card for IRQ servicing
01:55<til>goog morning
01:55<til>i have a huge problem with the new lighttpd package coming from security
01:56<til>after the update lighty writes endless this to the error logs
01:56<til>2008-04-07 23:10:17: (connections.c.1649) SSL: 5 error:00000000:lib(0):func(0):reason(0)

02:02<phillipsjk>well, since the fix is supposed te prevent denial of service, I think you can safely roll-back.
02:03<til>phillipsjk: do you also have a link howto roll back? :)
02:05<phillipsjk>no, I've never done that....

02:07-!-mankod [~mankod@] has joined #debian
02:07<til>jm_: thx for this hint ....
02:07<jm_>til: correct form is "I didn't expect"
02:07<dpkg>methinks downgrade is not possible with apt-get currently. No future support is anticipated. Some programs change the binary format of their files in a way that cannot be rolled back later, and package maintainer scripts provide ways to upgrade to new config file formats but not ways to downgrade. You can always try to downgrade a package using dpkg -i <olderversion.deb>.
02:07<jm_>finding this is just a few clicks away ...

02:12<vook>well if it's just one lightly that you'd be choosing to downgrade, it wouldn't really qualify as a Debian downgrade or rollback.

02:13-!-melodie [] has joined #debian
02:13<vook>jm_: couldn't he just remove lighttpd, go grab the older version and manually install it?
02:15<phillipsjk>vook: yes.
02:15<phillipsjk>assuming the config files remain the same.
02:16-!-dmind [~dmind@] has joined #debian
02:16<vook>til: jm_ is correct about the wording; downgrade == bad, not really possible.
02:16<til>well i just installed the previous version
02:16<vook>as does rollback
02:16<til>all works correct now
02:16-!-dmind [~dmind@] has left #debian []
02:16<til>so how to report this? just open a new bug?
02:17<dondelelcaro>til: check to see if a bug has already been opened; if not open one.
02:17<vook>you could report it, but it'd be difficult to determine if the origin of the problem (esp. now that you've fixed it).
02:18<til>vook: well it is a production machine, i had to fix it asap
02:18<til>dondelelcaro: i searched some hours ago, nothing there ...
02:19<til>dondelelcaro: 15 hours ago in the svn of lighttpd, one developer chenked in some typo changes at the ssl connection file
02:20<dondelelcaro>til: yeah, best to file a bug then against the security version and indicate what you saw
02:20<dondelelcaro>til: sometimes the security fixes don't get proper testing
02:20<dondelelcaro>(or they have bugs that show up only in some versions)

17:53<jkl4>so if I install a package from contrib it can include non-free software ? I read it must match the DFSG
17:54<dpkg>well, contrib is Debian packages that are free, but depend on software not in Debian (possibly in contrib or non-free). To get packages in contrib, add lines like deb http://yourmirror/debian/ [testing|stable] main in your /etc/apt/sources.list need 'contrib' and possibly 'non-free' on the end. Ask me about <non-free>

17:56<jkl4>chealer that was how I understand it and not understand it ;) Then why its not in main...
17:57<jkl4>because parts could need non-free...
17:57<chealer>jkl4: main is the component for fully supported software
17:57<padski_>jkl4, freedom to redistribute is a very important practical freedom.
17:58<jkl4>Ahh fwcutter is a tool to get firmware from proprietay drivers... so it must be in contrib. the tool itself is free...

18:13<twb>I have a bunch of machines that operate headless, offsite (at people's homes). It just occurred to me that I could use the system beep to emit diagnostic strings in morse code, so that when talking to the user over the phone I can differentiate between "I have a transient failure and will fix myself" and "I've fallen and I can't get up" and "the idiot you're talking to has unplugged my network cable".

19:24<themill>cjac: I do prefer the xargs solution as it is substantially faster though
19:25<cjac>I find that I'm overly cautious with quoting
19:25<cjac>yes, but I always forget that syntax
19:25<themill>best to be
19:26<cjac>I think an unquoted '*' would be expanded by the shell (which was the original problem)... if it's quoted, I /believe/ it is expanded/matched by find
19:26<themill>that's correct
19:27<guillaume>cjac: there no limit mention into docs
19:27<themill>Many/most other utilities wouldn't expand the * though. So rm '*' removes the literal filename * without expanding it.
