04:20<lothar>On my screen, after booting, it is only the X server and the mouse. No nice login screen. There I had some configuring issues while trying to enable TCP, but disabling that again didn't help. It must be another reason.
04:21<jm_>do you have any display manager installed?
04:22<lothar>Yes, it is gdm installed and before doing these TCP settings and finding out where to change this I must have done some other things with the application that changes the gdm.conf file.

04:25<dpkg>Debian does not use a specific runlevel for graphical display managers by default. Just remove the dm package(s) with "apt-get remove xdm kdm wdm gdm pdm". "update-rc.d -f xdm remove" and friends will also disable the dm until a package update is installed and the runlevel symlinks are restored.. NEWSFLASH! echo "false" >/etc/X11/default-display-manager, or a temporary solution is to hit ctl-alt-fN to get to a console

What I am asking is what application (GUI) should I start instead to get a GUI configuration instead modifying the files by hand. That I tried a whole day and nothing works. So now I'll try GUI. There are some gnome-session* applications, but wich ?
11:25<cahoot>no idea

11:26<lothar>Could you have a look into your menu where int usually appears. There it should be possible to figure out what application it starts ?
11:26<cahoot>it's a very simple textfile - one line
11:27<cahoot>well 3 if you are anal about it
11:27<lothar>cahoot: Yes. To enable TCP I know. But in general to repair the whole X Server, because it doesn't start properly.
11:28<Gathond>dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ?
11:28<Gathond>although if the X server itself works and it is just your window manager/desktop environment that is probably not going to solve anything

11:29<Gathond>by your description it sounds more like a gnome issue than an X one
11:29<cahoot>remove <users> .gnome dirs?
11:29<lothar>Tried sometimes. First I have to get back the emty X Server at boot time without any xdm or gdm running. Thats currently not because echoing false into default-display-manager.
11:30<lothar>As it started the plain X Server - yes.
11:31<Gathond>you could try what cahoot says, and perhaps dpkg-reconfigure xdm, gdm or whatever one you are using
11:31<lothar>But now I have to get started that plain X Server at boot time as a first step in fixing the issues step by step. Right ?

17:36<jthomas>should I kill that?
17:37<tcsetattr>if you can't see the dialog box, and the whiptail isn't going away on its won, you must have lost it on another terminal or something. killing it may be the only option. I'd try to find that terminal first though

23:53<peterS>also uue is old school, use mime base64 (:
23:54<zjason>peterS: I just need to transfer a binary file up to a embedded system via uart port.

23:55<peterS>oh and the embedded system has uudecode and/or perl (which has a uuencode codec built in so it's a one-liner)
23:55<zjason>peterS: I will use busybox's uudecode there
23:56<zjason>peterS: perl is way too big for an embedded system.
23:56<peterS>they should make perl machines, like lisp machines of old
23:56<zjason>peterS: :)
23:57<peterS>hey or I see lrzsz is in debian....
23:57<zjason>peterS: Yeah. If uuencode/uudecode do not work. I will try lrzsz then.
23:58<peterS>well if the embedded system can do zmodem. it probably cannot.
23:59<peterS>I have fond memories of using uuencode and a perl one-liner for uudecode, to transfer a 'ncftpget' binary to a machine that had no general programs for file download, so nothing could (easily) be transferred to or from it
23:59<peterS>ncftpget is self-contained and not _too_ much cutting and pasting uuencoded, it was a good bootstrap solution
