05:04<EmleyMoor>I suppose if I want to put up some patched packages, I would need to get adept at patching the source at least
05:04<Shadowdancer>a.k.a. "testing with old stuff"?
05:04<themill>EmleyMoor: that's not a bad way of putting it....
05:04*themill is running etchnhalf + far too many backports to be sane....
05:05<Shadowdancer>backporting is mostly running dpkg-buildpackage on newer sources...
05:05<EmleyMoor>I'm not on stable on anything at the moment
05:05<Shadowdancer>I usually start at testing and pull in stuff from unstable and experimental as needed

05:06<Shadowdancer>it is in my experience a lot less error-prone to be on that constant upgrade path instead of doing a huge upgrade at releases
05:06<themill>!moving target
05:06<dpkg>Sure, testing might be shiner that stable, but are you prepared to be continually updating your system? Things that worked today will break tomorrow. Config file formats will change and you'll have to fold your changes in yet again. Testing is a moving target and if you'd rather work *with* your computer rather than working *on* your computer, you might not want that.
05:07<themill>Shadowdancer: to each their own, but that's not my preferred way of working
05:07<benjamin>Hi, I have some really weird problems with my Debian after upgrading from 2Go to 3Go of RAM. Is this a known problem?
05:07<Shadowdancer>benjamin: define weird
05:08<EmleyMoor>I prefer to be on stable on machines where everything I want to do works with it, except near release when I often go testing, and testing where needed to make stuff work
05:08<Shadowdancer>TBH, I haven't really seen huge config issues, and I have an installation that's dating back to potato

11:48<petemc>!reiser
11:48<dpkg>i guess reiserfs is a journaling filesystem with pretty good performance and some interesting features. See http://www.namesys.com. It is wonderful and everyone loves it, until the axe falls and they lose data due to a crash. As such, it has a lot of ex-fans who are now sadder but wiser. See <ext3>, <xfs>, or <jfs> for safer filesystems. Like the DHARMA Initiative: government-sponsored, highly scientific and secretive. <ext3 vs reiserfs>
11:48<stevecotton>not my skill area

11:49<F-Lelo>wow................ thanks petemc!

11:49<dpkg>from memory, jfs is Journaled File System from IBM, licensed under the GPL. Fast and very reliable. Performance has improved significantly since initial release(s). Give it a try!, or http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/jfs/

15:56<hypnotic>hi there, i am trying to add/create a primary partition to a hd that started with only one extended partition (with a couple of logical partitions inside). I used Gparted to make space in the extended and then schrunk the extended which create unallocated space before the extended. Then I made a primary partition but it gets number it becomes sda2 instead of sda1. This seems to create a troublesome partitiontable. Anybody know a way to correct it safely

22:58<qq->!ask
22:58<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. when I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, or if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask (ask the whole channel!). We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer, ask later or ask debian-user@lists.debian.org
