00:13<dwon>I'm looking at the gammu man page. The grammar is awful. "All things backup’ed by backup can be restored (when made backup to Gammu text file)."
00:13<dwon>From what I understand, backups can be saved in a text format or a binary format. I'm guessing this file is in the binary format.
00:14<dwon>Unfortunately I can't do much more than that, because I don't have a mobile phone that I can connect to wammu/gammu.

00:57<clintdub>if one has lenny-testing would one have to reinstall for lenny-stable or just update
00:58<rutski>does it even make any use of swap if I don't use more ram then I have to begin with?
00:59<stew>clintdub: if your sources.list refers to "lenny" then you will be running stable when lenny is released. if it instead refers to 'testing' then you will be running the new testing (squeeze) after lenny releases
01:00<dr1v3r>whats the command to check the kernel version installed please guys?

01:28<dr1v3r>also. if i want to assign more IP's to more interfaces does it have to be a different range to what my current internal IP is or can it be the same? for example. if mine is currently 192.168.1.4 can the rest be the same range or will it need to be something lik e192.168.0.1 ??
01:29<jm_>that depends on what your goal is - in general there is no limitation about which subnet to use
01:30<dr1v3r>i want a few interfaces with different IP's so that i can run various things thats all
01:30-!-libereco [~libereco@201.132.245.56] has left #debian [Saliendo]
01:31<blarson>dr1v3r: You can assign multiple IPs to the same interface.
01:32<dr1v3r>see i have just tried the ......edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and put "auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp" in it. Then do "ifup -a" or reboot..... info that dpkg mentions but it killed my interface and i had to remove the auto eth0 option to get it working again :(
01:33<dr1v3r>i know i can use the virtual interface option which is what i plan to do, so i was just making sure it all was possible before i waste anymore of my time on it all lol

05:08<ebrsc>hi
05:09<ebrsc>what do i need to do to build a kernel for i686 (i386 being the default)? Thanks.
05:10<yang>ebrsc: you can use default debian kernel
05:10<yang>ebrsc: aptitude update;apt-cache search linux-image
05:10<yang>and then choose the -i686 version of the kernel
05:10<ebrsc>yang: thanks. but i'd like to apply some patches
05:11<yang>ah then you need to custom build it, check for manual on wiki.debian.org
05:11<ebrsc>yang: ok, thanks. i had a quick look but couldn't find yet. i'll look harder.

07:44<damiano>how to completly remove a package with aptitude?
07:44<damiano>if i do aptitude --purge remove many files are not deleted
07:44<damiano>why?
07:45<petemc>aptitide purge package
07:45<damiano>i want to remove all package files/dirs
07:45<petemc>so you said
07:45<damiano>aptitude purge is not equals to aptitude --purge remove ?
07:45<aptitude>...but purge is already something else...
07:46<petemc>im not sure --purge remove is valid aptitude syntax
07:46<damiano>with purge many files are not removed
07:46<damiano>example
07:46<damiano>mysql
07:46<damiano> /var/lib/mysql still here
07:46<damiano>i want to remove it entirely
07:46<sheldonh>the intention of purge is to remove as much as is possible, without removing something that could belong to another package

07:47<sheldonh>petemc: i would have expected purge to remove all my database files

22:01<rickbot>apt-get install (package)
22:01<amphi>!why aptitude
22:01<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution than other tools, it has far more advanced searching available, and will automatically uninstall unneeded dependencies, read /usr/share/doc/aptitude/README for more info. Aptitude can also remove or purge one package at the same time as installing others all from the command line, making it much easier to recover from broken dependencies.

22:03<avu>Hell_Kaiser, really, read the stuff dpkg send you about grounding
22:04<avu>Hell_Kaiser, you'll have much more fun and be more productive using debian if you read at least a little bit of the excellent documentation up front
22:06<rickbot>Hell_Kaiser: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html
22:06<kop>Hell_Kaiser : The basic idea is this: You get all your programs from debian, and all your drivers, and everything just works, forever. Even after upgrades. If you want to just poke it with a stick, you run the synaptic GUI interface for finding and installing, but many people find that limiting.
22:06<kop>Hell_Kaiser : (I couldn't even tell you where to find synaptic in the gui menus. It's in there somewhere.)
22:07<Hell_Kaiser>/usr/share/desktop if memory serves
22:07<avu>it doesn't :)
22:08<kop>Hell_Kaiser : And, you are running testing, so it's not quite so stable as stable, so maybe some things won't work. (Stable's not entirely perfect either, but...)
22:08<rickbot>Hell_Kaiser: in terminal: su then apt-get install synaptic and then find it under 'System'
