06:30<cyorxamp>Hey folks, I have a HDD with an old debian install... is there some file which lists all the packages I used to have installed?
06:31<Bushmills>cyorxamp: /var/lib/dpkg/status should show
06:31<Bushmills>you might want to grep for relevant info
06:31<cyorxamp>lol - can I just like get a list of the names using grep?
06:31<Bushmills>ehm.. different lines. sed should help
06:32<cyorxamp>ok thanks... one other thing
06:32<cyorxamp>I've got my file/print server working again (reinstalled for lenny)... and Samba is working, NFS is working, printing via samba is working
06:32<dpkg>reinstall is, like, aptitude reinstall '~i' ; or COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l | awk '/^[hi]i/{print $2}' | xargs apt-get -y --reinstall install, or dpkg --get-selections > my_packages.txt , then later, dpkg --set-selections < my_packages.txt && apt-get install . See also <aptitude clone>. <debian clone>
06:32<cyorxamp>However printing via samba isn't very debian friendly... (i.e. to debian clients)... what should I use?

17:41<themill>Jay29: depends on what it is and how hard it is to work around. In general, a workaround is preferred, but look at to see if there's an existing backport (bpo is generally quite good with security support). If you have to make your own backport, then consider "subscribing" to the package via the PTS so you are notified when new versions are uploaded.
