00:19<Frozen>last night it had some update packages that needed to download
00:19-!-thepretender84_ [~thepreten@] has joined #debian
00:19<Frozen>one of them had to do with the mdadm
00:19<Frozen>after the upgrade & reboot
00:19<brady>there is a graphics card issue with the PPC install that is preventing xserver from functioning properly
00:20<Frozen>it doesnt start at all, it stacks on the mdadm saying "No suitable drive was found for /md/md0/" or something
00:20<Frozen>if my raid1 2 x hdds
00:20<Frozen>are partitioned on a proper raid1 way
00:21<Frozen>is there anyway i can reinstall debian

00:22<dibson_>frozen: I've reinstalled debian without blowing away the /home partition
00:22<Frozen>yes but how;/
00:22<Frozen>my installation is raid1 2 x hdds
00:23<dibson_>but you should probably keep a back up, i wouldn't trust it fully
00:23<Frozen>i cant
00:23<Frozen>it doesnt start

00:24<kop>Frozen : Boot the install cd and go into rescue mode (press f? at boot, one of them will say how to do it.) Then chroot into your install to do things like backup or fix it.
00:25<enouf>!rescue mode
00:25<dpkg>Debian Installer has a recovery ('rescue') mode, which can be used to reinstall the GRUB or LILO boot loaders. See section 8.7 of the Installation Guide ("Recovering a Broken System") for more details. Additional steps are required if you are using encrypted LVM, see
00:25<Frozen>the problem is NOT at GRUB
00:25<enouf>no shit sherlock
00:25<Frozen>it is on the mdadm's latest upgrade which i did yesterday
00:25-!-fwix971 [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:25<enouf>did the kernel get upgraded?
00:26<Frozen>and since that doesn't work, the rescue mode wouldnt really help though

00:27<enouf>so .. your initrd is likely missing the needed modules - and/or your /etc/default/mdadm isn't ok .. or /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf - that is; if you are indeed using mdadm and not dmraid or something
00:27<Frozen>i'm using mdadm for sure
00:27<enouf>boot the older kernel
00:27<Frozen>so yeah, probably either initrd is likely missing the needed modules or my /etc/default/mdadm isn't ok after the latest upgrade, but what can i do about it ? :/
00:28-!-thepretender84_ [~thepreten@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:28<Frozen>i mean, if the problem is @ /etc/default/mdadm
00:29<Frozen>which probably is.. cause it was the first time that it had an upgrade for it, so apparently that should be the problem

00:33<Frozen>99% not, i think that i didn't have anything to do with the LVM

00:33<kop>enouf: That damm weird Gateway box with the backplane acted up again. :-P I don't know what breaks (I still get ping, and ssh echos, but nothing else, ever.) I'm running vmstat 5 forever and logging the ouput. Maybe it's thrashing itself to death. (But I've 500MB of ram.) Oh well.

14:02<angelo>hi... I'm looking for an easy to use backup programm but effective... What I want to do is let some SMB shared folders be shadowed to another HDD.. what can I use best ?
14:03<Halitech>angelo, rsync?
14:04<angelo>lemme look at some man pages
14:04<jordanb>Yeah rsync would be your best bet for that.
14:04<jordanb>By "shadowed" do you mean, 'synced up occasonally' or do you mean live mirroring?
14:04<angelo>does it work with time interval or does it sync everytime a files changes ?
14:05<Halitech>angelo, are the shared folders and the other hard drive connected to the same machine?
14:05<jordanb>angelo; rysnc works in batch. You run it and it syncs up everything right hne.
14:05<angelo>Halitech yep .. same computer
14:05<jordanb>angelo; So I have rsync run once nightly.
14:05<angelo>is there also a way so that files are being watched for changes ?
14:05<jordanb>Not with rsync.
14:05<jordanb>Or with anything I think.
14:05<petern>if you do that, you want a raid mirror
14:06<jordanb>If you want live mirroring you need something like raid.
14:06<Halitech>angelo, just set cron to run once an hour or 2
14:06-!-midlis [] has joined #debian
14:06<angelo>jordanb I know but it is a 1.2tb hdd and its just like a gig or 200 that needs to be mirrored... so raid mirror would be expensive overkill :p

14:07<jordanb>You can software raid just a partition.
14:07<angelo>how can I let rsync run once every 2 hours?? can it do that itself or do I need cron for that ?
14:08<jordanb>Rsync is just a utility that synchronizes two directory trees efficiently.
14:08<stew>don't sell it short
14:08<jordanb>Well yeah, the way it does it is pure magic.
14:08<angelo>hmm never got cron to work
14:08<jordanb>But it's not an all-encompasing 'backup framework' like amanda or something.
14:09<angelo>it's like my nemises in linux enviroment
14:09<stew>angelo: why would't you just use software raid?
14:09<jordanb>Debian should have set it up for you.
14:09<angelo>stew then I would need 2 HDDs just as big right ?
14:09<stew>angelo: yes
14:10<jordanb>You just need two partitions the same size.
14:10<angelo>hmm .. could be done .. but not ideal
14:10<angelo>but I guess if I get cron and rsync to like eachother it will be fine as well
14:10<petern>scheduled rsync has its advantages... two filesystems to go wrong instead of one, and a time delay for when someone accidentally removes an important file...
14:10<jordanb>If you want live mirroring, that's what raid is for.

20:18<twb>Bushmills: I'm guessing that newfangled gnome/hal stuff
20:19<Bushmills>neko, if you can mount cds manually, your problem is unlikely to be a kernel problem - automounting cdroms is not kernel task
20:20<Neko>mmmmm i dont know. I installed Debian, then the packages to compile the kernel, then compiled the kernel, then boot, the Celebrate (because it booted and Gnome and everything worked) and when i tryed to install tvtime PLOP cd didn't mount like with the "stock" kernel

20:21<Bushmills>unless you have some program installed which does that automatical mounting, you'd have to mount cdroms by issuing a mount command
20:21-!-duraperi1ol is now known as duraperidol
20:23<Neko> let me get this straight. Then this program must be installed, right? because a "just intalled" Debian mounts cd's automatically right? the what i have to do is "reconfigure" this program with the new kernel?
20:23<Neko>am i right? am i even more lost?
20:23<twb>Neko: normally a new Debian install will not auto-mount CDs.
20:23-!-NuryFV||UIS [~nuryfv@] has left #debian []
20:23<twb>Neko: probably you chose a "desktop" install, which means GNOME was installed and it will automount stuff
20:24<Bushmills>the three prime candidates for automatically mounting are: gnome desktop environment, kde desktop environment, autofs
20:24<Neko>yes, i have Gnome
20:24<Bushmills>Neko: try to mount your cdrom manually
20:24<Neko>and it loads just fine with the new kernel
20:25<Bushmills>if that fails, chances are you forgot cdrom support in your kernel. if it works, it is unlikely to be a kernel problem

23:39<rutski>yea, I am
23:39<rutski>I'm looking at the bash man page
23:39<rutski>the claim is that if the shell is login+interactive then you get ~/.profile and such
23:39<cwood>This being Debian, you could always download a bunch of shells and read them man pages for comparison purposes.
23:39-!-freealan [] has joined #debian
23:39<rutski>if it's (interactive)+(non-login) then you get ~/.bashrc and such
23:39<rutski>if it's (non-interactive)+(non-login) then you don't get anything
23:40<rutski>the trouble is that I'm puzzling about when ~/.bashrc would ever get used
23:40<rutski>when would you ever have an interactive non-login shell?
23:40<rutski>what's even the point of having a separate concept called a "login" shell?
23:40<rutski>it's an interactive shell by definition a login shell?
23:40<cwood>I think you're overthinking this a bit.
23:40<rutski>oh, hmm; one off remote command execution comes to mind
23:41<cwood>Remember that many times when an application does something, it uses a shell to run the command.
23:41<cwood>Perl's system() comes to mind.
23:41<cwood>That would be a non-interactive, non-login shell.
23:43<rutski>indeed, and that makes complete sense
23:44<rutski>but that's not what's in question

23:49<cwood>As to the question "the trouble is that I'm puzzling about when ~/.bashrc would ever get used" ... in Debian, at least, if you're running a desktop environment and open a terminal when bash is your shell in /etc/passwd, the user-configurable config and commands are read from $HOME/.bashrc.
23:49<rutski>ah, indeed
23:49<cwood>ksh has the concept of a login shell too.
23:49<rutski>ah, hmm; I'll have to play with that
23:49<rutski>I wonder if different terminal emulators do it differently too
23:50<cwood>Sounds like an excellent question, likely also answered in the man pages.
