00:06<snogglethorpe>so... anyone know how sound-juicer's meta-data stuff is suppsoed to work? I thought it was supposed to use musicbrainz, but it never succeeds; i don't see how it _could_ succeed in uploading new meta-data, since it doesn't know my login id etc there, and doesn't seem to offer anyway for me to tell it...
00:09<sampablokuper>kapil, thanks for the reply. Sorry for not getting back to you - was looking at docs :)

01:19<snogglethorpe>so what format do people use for importing (ripped) music to an ipod? I understand the free-software AAC encoder isn't so good...

01:24<Dracie>snogglethorpe, for awhile i used lame
01:24-!-bozz [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:24<snogglethorpe>lame's supposed to be reasonably good
01:25<snogglethorpe>since the ipod doens't support .ogg, i'm not sure what other choice there is besides mp3 or mp4, and if the mp4 ain't so great...
01:25<snogglethorpe>[encoder, not the format]
01:25<PMT>The free software encoder does do AAC, it's just not as fast as it could be.
01:25<snogglethorpe>hmm what i heard is that the resulting _quality_ isn't so good for AAC
01:26<snogglethorpe>i don't have much way to judge that statement though
01:26<snogglethorpe>[in other words, though AAC is a better format than mp3, the free encoder isn't up to scratch]
01:27-!-DDRdgo [~diegoriva@] has joined #debian
01:27<PMT>Oh, fascinating.
01:27<PMT>That's tragic!
01:28<PMT>I'd be curious how people manage to use the Free encoder to encode AAC streams for e.g. videos.
01:28<PMT>The people who do that tend to be quality nazis.
01:29<snogglethorpe>the problem is that this is all scuttlebutt, ...
01:29<snogglethorpe>i don't have a good sense of where reliable info can be found about such things

02:06<fxiny>update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
02:06<fxiny>debian way
02:06<fxiny>kdas: you running lenny ?
02:07<kdas>fxiny, yes sir and i already tried that and it only lists openbox. I don't see a option for lxsession-lite
02:08-!-mhash [~mhash@] has joined #debian
02:08<fxiny>kdas: no sir , anyway i installed qingy yesterday and is very very good , framebuffer . nice menu , still looking into it
02:09<kapil>kdas: i think you need to add the relevant choices to .xinitrc
02:09<kdas>fxiny, what does that have to do with me not being able to set lxsession as default?
02:10<kdas>kapil, i can launch lxsession to .xinitrc true but i was sorta wondering how the lxde meta package sets lxsession as the default
02:10<fxiny>kdas: because someone yestarday gave his qingy menu and i see so many esntries in it . even rxvt
02:11<kapil>fxiny: surely rxvt depends on running X!?
02:13<kdas>fxiny, with qingy is it possible to still log on straight to console?
02:13<fxiny>kapil: adding wm to quingy is easy , i'm on a qingy log level_debug bug with fluxbox .still chasing it
02:13<fxiny>and anyway qingy is fast and nice
02:14<fxiny>i'll use it for sure qith lenny
02:14<fxiny>kdas: yes . you can log in console
02:15<kdas>umm i don't like how it hides the shutdown and login text though
02:15<fxiny>kdas: what you have to do is only adding the vga kernel line to grub . tell aptitude to install it and read /etc/qingy/settings
02:15<fxiny>kdas: shytdown ? there is mouse support
02:16<fxiny>kdas: very configurable

02:17<fxiny>kdas: there is an option somewhwere i'm still looking into it > -n, --no-shutdown-screen is supposed to close fb before shutting down , to see system shutdown messages
02:18<fxiny>kdas: and i think i even try the no fb plain menu , no mouse just a b c choices

02:43<kdas>if thats the case why not use links2 like i said ? i mean the only sites you need iceweasel for are the ones that need a mouse.
02:43<kdas>fxiny, ok that makes sense. yea i like the idea of limiting the mouse though
02:44<fxiny>kdas: i have tons of scripts running via cron pushing pages on iceweasel tabs
02:44<craigevil>you can use iceweasel with the vimporator extension, then you can use the kb for everything, as long as you know vi keyboard

A lot of users will not ask those questions ever, true; but I care more about people like you not having to ask those questions in the first place. You would be done setting up your desktop by now if you had not hit a Gnome speedbump

20:22<PotatoX>Quick question: I am trying to install openchange. However libc6 (>=2.7-1) is dependent. I am new to debian and do not know how to get this added to my package manager. Anyone care to help a newb?
20:23<mgoetze>PotatoX: this is some software not supplied by debian, i take it?
20:24<PotatoX>I believe openchange is. I added a repository for it?
20:24<mgoetze>PotatoX: anyway, debian etch (the current stable release) doesn't have that version of libc
20:24<mgoetze>yeah if you had to add a repository it's not from debian
20:24<PotatoX>ok, how might I find a repository that would have libc6 of this version?
20:24<mgoetze>so, you should check if the people supplying you with this software also have a build for stable
20:25<mgoetze>if you want libc6 2.7 you'll have to upgrade to lenny (testing)
20:25<PotatoX>I don't believe they have a stable build at this time. Upgrade? Do you know a site which might get me moving in the right direction?
20:25<mgoetze>you can't just replace the libc, it's the second-most critical piece of software after the kernel
20:26<PotatoX>Thanks for the help
20:26<mgoetze>hm, it doesn't want to say so in the channel?
20:27<mgoetze>oh well, the bot should have sent you a message
20:28<PotatoX>Sure did, thanks again
