07:57<mahogny>Guest1839, you should have them already if you installed it normally. look for synaptic in your menus

13:51<macrut>hello
13:51<macrut>I have an important question
13:52<macrut>Is the Structure of Linux modular or not?
13:52<macrut>I have recently read that it isn't
13:53<blarson>macrut: Depends on what you mean by "the Structure of Linux".
13:53<simonrvn>macrut: be more specific
13:53<macrut>the code
13:53-!-paul0 [~paulo@189.34.49.148] has joined #debian
13:53<macrut>the programation of it
13:53<macrut>sorry for my bad english xD
13:53<simonrvn>which code?
13:53<macrut>the code of the kernel
13:53<macrut>the model of programation
13:53<simonrvn>kernel? user space apps?
13:54<simonrvn>it's a modular kernel yes, but called a macrokernel.
13:54-!-hobbestigrou [~hobbestig@AMontsouris-156-1-101-218.w83-202.abo.wanadoo.fr] has joined #debian
13:54<simonrvn>vs. say HURD or BSD, which are microkernels.
13:54<paul0>hi, someone here can help me solve my microphone problem? I can't record anything with it
13:54<macrut>so
13:55<macrut>monolithic kernels must be modular or not?
13:55<simonrvn>macrut: you can't really define them like you could in earlier times, since the lines have blurred.
13:55<macrut>ok
13:55<simonrvn>when you say monolithic, you usually mean every module is built-in.
13:56<macrut>ok
13:56-!-newsense [~newsense@newsense.user.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
13:56<simonrvn>many do that for extra security; having everything built-in, and preventing module loading, tightens access to kernel space memory.

16:12<syntax_>hmm, maybe its bahaviour is different in linux as opposed to solaris
16:12<abrotman>mgoetze: /etc/profile actually
16:13<syntax_>that did the trick

16:16<mgoetze>you can get it to work pretty much like bash if you want

16:16<syntax_>bash works fine for me

16:17<syntax_>if I were to try any alternative at this point, it'd probably be ksh
