03:24<dpkg>somebody said kept back was when packages have not been upgraded even though newer versions are available. This happens if dependencies cannot be resolved, packages are on hold or you used "upgrade" not "dist-upgrade" and new packages need to be installed. To investigate, "apt-get -s install <kept-package>". Also see http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/69 Ask me about <dist-upgrade>.
03:25<Supaplex>it took me a minute to recall what I think you see. "holted" is not a package status.

08:53<SlimeyPete>!grub
08:53<dpkg>grub is, like, the Grand Unified Bootloader at http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ . It's an extremely powerful boot loader which can boot many OSes, understands many filesystems (including <reiserfs> and <XFS> since 0.97), but see http://bugs.debian.org/grub. For an install guide, see http://linuxjournal.com/4622, or "aptitude install grub grub-doc". To reinstall, ask about <fixmbr> or <grub.errors>. http://wiki.debian.org/Grub
08:53<angasuleWork>you can do it manually, but I prefer using supergrub

16:23<jthomas>annoia is it happening at the same place on the disk? You could try using dd 'backwards' meaning it reads from the end of the disk first. It could also be hitting some sort of physical problem where the arm cannot move any further inside the drive; if you freeze the disk (in a freezer or icebox or jar of frozen rice, seriously) then the metal may shrink enough to get past that physical issue
16:23<jthomas>or, may not.

For other java programs (lenny onwards), you can install the default-jre package to get install a java runtime, or "apt-cache search java-virtual-machine" to see other implementations. The best options are probably openjdk-6-jre or sun-java-6-jre. Also ask me about <install java etch>.

21:39<CompWizrd>put it in, think you hit enter once, your password gets cracked automatically
21:39<CompWizrd>takes a couple minutes on a p4 class machines, max
21:40<CompWizrd>as long as it's xp
21:40<variable>yep it's cp and i have p4

21:40<mib_qvr0mbef>CompWizrd: this distro will crack strong passwords in just a few minutes?
21:40<CompWizrd>actually, there's an ophcrack for linux now that i think of it
21:41<CompWizrd>mib_qvr0mbef: yup
21:41<CompWizrd>no such thing as strong passwords in XP

21:41<mib_qvr0mbef>CompWizrd: xp uses weak encryption or something?
21:41<CompWizrd>more that ophcrack uses rainbow tables
21:42<mib_qvr0mbef>Aaaahh.
21:42<CompWizrd>and yeah, xp is pretty weak anyways
21:42<CompWizrd>ophcrack is in lenny at least, didn't check etch
21:42<CompWizrd>and then grab a table from the ophcrack website
21:43<jrabbit>lol
21:43<mib_qvr0mbef>CompWizrd: thats pretty crazy. thanks for the info.
21:43<jrabbit>unless you have very fast internet your going to be able to generate a rainbow table faster then you can dl it
21:43<jrabbit>iirc
21:43<jrabbit>same goes from shitty ass cpus
21:44<CompWizrd>well, the main one they use is a 350 meg, and there's a 650 meg or something like that one if you have lots of ram
