I also know that I could put it in the users home, but it seemed that it would be cooler for all users to get this setting on startup. thanks in advance.

20:06<dondelelcaro>edbian: dhcp3-client will start trying to renew at around half the lease time
20:06<dondelelcaro>(which is more than often enough)
20:07<edbian>dondelelcaro: I'm trying to solve a strange issue I'm having. Recently if I step away from my computer for a few minutes (less than an hour just now) when I get back I can't resolve host names (or get online at all) until I restart networking (sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart)
20:07<edbian>dondelelcaro: So I can look in /etc/dhcp3-client/whatever/dhclient.conf
20:07<edbian>?

20:11<edbian>dondelelcaro: Hello?
20:11<dondelelcaro>edbian: when that happens, look at the output of ip addr; the contents of /etc/resolv.conf, and see whether you can ping anything
20:11-!-justaguy [~justaguy@69-165-165-148.dsl.teksavvy.com] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
20:11<dondelelcaro>edbian: alternatively, make the lease time for your router shorter.
20:12<dondelelcaro>(but what you're asking to do isn't going to solve the underlying problem; at most it will just mask it)
20:13<edbian>I have done some of that. From memory: ip addr - I have one (the same one as before the problem so it must be valid). /etc/resolv.conf is how it should be (I use open DNS servers first, then fall back to the local campus servers). First time I could ping nothing. Second time I could ping local addresses.
20:13<edbian>dondelelcaro: I am at school. I do not have any control over the routers
20:13<edbian>dondelelcaro: What do you suspect the underlying problem to be? ;)
20:15<dondelelcaro>edbian: if you have an ip, and you can't ping anything, even by number, then the problem is somewhere in the network that you're using.

20:15<edbian>dondelelcaro: Then we did restarting networking on my machine fix the issue (even if only temporarily) ??
20:15<edbian>dondelelcaro: I could ping local IP address
20:15<edbian>(even by number)
20:16<dondelelcaro>edbian: do you have to register or something on that network? they could be doing any number of (broken) things, from putting you in a separate vlan, to blocking packets, or similar.
20:16<edbian>dondelelcaro: I think they are throttling me (I am what some might consider a heavy user)
20:17<edbian>They are mysterious about the details :(

20:17<jim>hi
20:18<dondelelcaro>well, then you should be contacting them. regardless, just renewing your lease probably isn't going to help much. You can request a shorter lease time (which means more frequent renewals) by setting send dhcp-lease-time in your dhclient.conf, assuming you're using dhcp3-client
20:18<jim>anyone talking
20:18<AndyJ>jim: hi
20:18<jim>hi andy
20:18<edbian>dondelelcaro: I am using dhcp-client. I will try that. Thank you for your help! :) They're not very willing to help (they do no wrong). I'll see what I can work out.
