10:05<abrotman>!install java
10:05<dpkg>For the java plugin install either the icedtea-gcjwebplugin (free) plugin or the sun-java6-plugin (<non-free>). For other java programs (lenny onwards), you can install the default-jre package to get install a java runtime, or "apt-cache search java-virtual-machine" to see other implementations. The best options are probably openjdk-6-jre or sun-java6-jre. Also ask me about <install java etch>. Also see <java alternatives>

17:14<Lillymon>I don't really do the dual-boot thing. Every time I tried, I immediately started using one or the other exclusively. Now I rarely reboot, so it seems utterly pointless. VirtualBox will do for testing, that way they can explode safely.

17:16<abrotman>Malicia: uhm .. it does mean they do not know the debian packaging system ..
17:16<Malicia>at least, I find so. That's why I told Lillymon this
17:16<abrotman>just because you can install gentoo doesn't mean you can fix a broken debian
17:16<Lillymon>I've never even tried installing Gentoo. Seems like a lot of work for nothing.
17:17<Malicia>abrotman, yes, right, but I don't think someone who has already managed to run an OS like this will be traumathized by Sid ;)
17:17<tuxcrafter>Lillymon: ok just an other errata, testing and unstable are in no way supported
17:18<tuxcrafter>the debian developers use tesing and unstable to make sure the packges in stable are supported
17:18<abrotman>Malicia: good, so you'll be here to support him every day ?
17:18<tuxcrafter>Lillymon: however you can always use testing to well test tings for your self
17:18<Lillymon>Is this the Ubuntu definition of 'not supported' where you're actually very likely to get support if you ask nicely and don't seem completely clueless, or is this a more strict definition?

22:37<bobneedshelp>Hi. I have two SATA drives that have LVM setup on them that I have placed into a new computer. Can I do a fresh install of debian and point at the LVM or will i need keys and the like (like windows GUIDs)?
22:37<abrotman>need keys?
22:37<abrotman>installation keys?
22:38<bobneedshelp>no i mean for LVM to work
22:38<bobneedshelp>or does it just partition the disks?
22:38<bobneedshelp>i didn't encrypt them as far as I know
22:39<bobneedshelp>I just don't want to risk losing my data
22:39<bobneedshelp>I have an IDE drive for the OS
22:39<faheem>bobneedshelp: no
22:40<faheem>you can just reuse the LVM
22:40<faheem>the install should detect it automatically, including your LVs.
22:40<git-hi9h>there seems to be a bug in nautilus that keeps me from smb'ng into a winxp machine - anyone else have that problem?
22:41<bobneedshelp>faheem: awesome thanks
22:41<bobneedshelp>i thought that was the case but wanted to be sure
22:41<bobneedshelp>i have 2TB of files across the two disks
22:41<faheem>bobneedshelp: you might run into issues (unlikely I think) wrt moving to a new computer, but should not be LVM related afaik
22:42<faheem>bobneedshelp: you have a backup, right?
22:42<bobneedshelp>yes i've moved from intel p4 to athlon x2 so there are a lot of issues
22:42<git-hi9h>i can get into the win machine from xsmbrowser, but not from nautilus, strange...

22:42<bobneedshelp>i figure clean install is better than trying to fix
22:43<faheem>bobneedshelp: right. you'll want to scrub the data on the logical volumes, but the LVM setup itself should be fine.
22:43<faheem>i assume you are using lenny?
22:43<bobneedshelp>yes I am on lenny. sorry what do you mean by scrub the data?
22:44<bobneedshelp>you mean the system partitions
22:44<faheem>bobneedshelp: wipe the data.
22:44<faheem>no, not the system partitions. i'm assuming you want to keep the same structure, /home, /root etc, right?
22:44<bobneedshelp>faheem: i have an IDE (/dev/hda) for the OS and 2 SATA drives with data (files, music etc)
22:44<faheem>just the data on the partitions/logical volumes.

22:45<bobneedshelp>but i can't boot with a liveCD because my onboard nvidia doesn't seem to be supported

22:47<faheem>-s i think
