04:49<dpkg>i heard dash is a <POSIX> compliant shell that is much smaller than bash offering faster script execution and boot time. For new installations of squeeze and later, dash will be the default /bin/sh. To switch old installations, "dpkg-reconfigure dash". To check if your existing scripts will work OK with dash, use checkbashisms from devscripts and see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DashAsBinSh
04:50<OdyX>ZeZu: you cannot remove dash as package (it has become essential).

If i switch back to 2.6.26 the permissions are fixed - which led me to believe it must be something kernel related. Fact is that I do need the new kernel...

08:07<peej>jm_, I was thinking of users on a shared machine being able to do eg sshd restarts, rather than getting root via an exploit. Ordinary users shouldn't have that kind of ability (starting servers), so why have o+x as a setting in that directory at all (apart from inspiring the coders to code the scripts with more care)?

08:10<weasel>| They should not be made unreadable (modes like 4711 or 2711 or even 4111); doing so achieves no extra security, because anyone can find the binary in the freely available Debian package; it is merely inconvenient. 08:24<peej>thanks for the explanation. I got confused. I see it's actually just like the case of a user doing 'rm -rf "/"' - passing / to the root-owned rm doesn't let rm do privilege-requiring stuff, because it runs with user privileges. The o+x is superfluous but crafting environment variables for scripts under if-up.d can't do anything evil anyway because privileges remain at ordinary user level.

09:53-!-debalance [~quassel@exit.credativ.com] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
09:55<fallback>problem: after compiling vanilla 2.6.31-6 on lenny, granting access to administrative tools in GNOME (i.e. synaptic, user management) fails. Rolling back to 2.6.26 - problem gone. Fact is I need 2.6.31-6 due to a number of USB fixes
09:56<Zathraz>fallback, use aptitude from console instead: not a solution/fix but a very workable work-around
09:56-!-goodger__ [~ben@94-194-7-33.zone8.bethere.co.uk] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
09:56<Zathraz>if synaptic is the only issue that is
09:57<fallback>true, but the problem remains that none of the (graphical) administrative tools are accessible
09:58<fallback>i didn't think the kernel could cause problems like these, but rolling back to 2.6.26 clears everything up... I've compared configurations of both kernels but can't find any differences that should matter in this respect...
09:59<fallback>btw, even calling a root terminal is denied - i have to open a normal one and su to root.
09:59<Zathraz>sounds like a weird problem to me

10:01<Zathraz>HAL is the hardware abstraction layer. Should not be related to user rights. But the same goes for the kernel
10:01<Zathraz>fallback. Maybe PAM? (far fetch this is)
10:01<fallback>you suggest re-installing pam?
10:01<Zathraz>no
10:02<Zathraz>maybe check auth.log etc and keep PAM in mind as a possible issue
10:02<fallback>but why would pam cause troubles with a new(er) kernel?
10:03<Zathraz>no idea. But it is related to giving things access. And access seems to be your issue. I could ask the same for gnome which is an entire different layer in OSI than the kernel is
10:04<fallback>fair enough.. i'l look around for a bit and be back in a few..

12:02<sney>the best way to deal with atheros wifi is to install the system with hardwired eithernet then get the 2.6.30-1 kernel from backports.org
12:02<sney>or just install squeeze
12:02<sney>either way, madwifi has issues
12:03<EagleRock>frolic: you might consider using the kmuto installers for stable, as he uses an updated kernel for installation

12:04<frolic>flippy10: following the wiki page, this instructions is to setup the wireless after installation, right?
12:04<sney>as long as kmuto's installer has 2.6.29 or later, it'll work
12:04<frolic>I am trying to install via usb or via goodbye-microsoft.com
12:04<frolic>so, this is a netinst method, and neither wireless or wired work...
12:05<sney>Squeeze i386 works very well, for what it's worth
12:05<EagleRock>frolic: the way I did it is to install the base system via the netinst installer, boot into the new system, configure wifi using interfaces, then run tasksel

I need to go to my domain registrar and change the records the way, so it would point to our own DNS servers instead of our I-net provider's ones. But I see that at the registra's interface there the names like ns1.provider.com , etc... Can I put just naked IPs instead of names there? Wouldn't it create the problem?

19:49<Supaplex>muh2000: are you even using debian? what's stopping you from reinstalling (confmiss) to install the missing config files you deleted? do you have backups? did you rename the file, or delete it? I don't know why you chose to ignore confmiss, but you're upset at your own hand.

19:53<muh2000>Supaplex: yes debian/squeeze. what is stoping me from doing it? well the reason ist that i dont want a rand() conf file i want to auto regenerate the config manually like udev does the first time it sees a new hardware...
19:53<Supaplex>the shipped one does that already for debian eth devices
19:53<Supaplex>one is a generator, the other is the database of seen cards
19:53<muh2000>Supaplex: how does the shipped one know about my hardware?

19:54<muh2000>Supaplex: well then tell me how to use the generator... ;)
19:54<muh2000>besides that i already solved the problem but still want to know how this could have been done.
19:54<Supaplex>I don't know udev that well. I would have to reinstall the package via confmiss
19:55<muh2000>i c. well maybe the next time i have troubles like that i will come back for confmiss.

23:57<bgupta>I know this is a generic Linux question but I'm wondering if anyone know of a tool (most likely a kernel mod) that supports synchronous interception of filesystem writes, allowing asynchronous replication to a remote a host(filesystem target)
23:58<Supaplex>!drbd
23:58<dpkg>hmm... drbd is a block device which is designed to build high availability clusters. This is done by mirroring a whole block device via (a dedicated) network. You could see it as a network raid-1. It is basically raid 1 over two pcs.
23:58<bgupta>I'm exploring DRDB as a abckup plan.. but it seems mostly targetted for local copies
