00:58<int_80h>amitzz, usually you add an init script to /etc/init.d/ and use update-rc.d to create symlinks to your desired runlevels
00:59<int_80h>you can create one from /etc/init.d/skeleton that includes a variety of useful functions and showcases the debian init script method
00:59<simonrvn>you sound like an ad :P
00:59<newsense>im trying to install libvirt-bin alongside kvm but apt wants to remove kvm, how can i find out why ?
01:00<int_80h>trying to be complete, simonrvn :P
01:00<simonrvn>int_80h: good job :)
01:03<int_80h>i have no idea, newsense. libvirt-bin supposedly enhances kvm, so i'm at a loss. what's the full output when you run apt-get install libvirt-bin?
01:04<newsense>int_80h: just wants to remove kvm, i found theres a package qemu-kvm also but can't really tell the difference from their descriptions

01:50<Wilduck>So, I'm trying to install rxvt-unicode, and aptitude tells me "no candidate ersion found for rxvt-unicode" what exactly does this mean?
01:52-!-Art3mis4 [~art3mis4@190.74.106.127] has quit [Quit: Ex-Chat]
01:53<int_80h>aptitude uses that message to refer to the condition apt describes as: "Package ____ is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. E: Package has no installation candidate"
01:54<Wilduck>And yet, a debian package search says it's availible for lenny, and sid
01:54<int_80h>check your sources.list, run an apt-get update, and try again
01:54<int_80h>clearly the package exists. I have it installed (and am chatting to you with it :P)
01:54<Wilduck>already tried that, no dice
01:54<int_80h>are you running stable?
01:55<Wilduck>testing
01:55<int_80h>oh
01:55<int_80h>testing frequently has that error
01:55<int_80h>i'm surprised you haven't encountered it before
01:55<Wilduck>me too I guess...
01:55<Wilduck>I install a lot of business...
01:55<int_80h>testing, unlike stable or unstable, has a lot of packages come in and out all the time as they get transitioned
01:55<Wilduck>so I should just wait a day or two?
01:55<newsense>i just installed it on testing
01:55<int_80h>the apt page even mentions you might get this in testing
01:55<int_80h>yeah, i would
01:56<int_80h>or you can probably install the stable version if you're impatient
01:56-!-eix_ [~flori@p54832983.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:56<Wilduck>is that safe?
01:56<int_80h>maybe the unstable depending on your dependencies (lol0
01:56<int_80h>is installing a stable package safe? yes, sure
01:56<Wilduck>is it difficult?
01:57<Wilduck>I'm using testing mostly because I like getting error messages, it's how I learn to do stuff...
01:57<int_80h>i would really recommend you run either stable or unstable
01:57<int_80h>testing is not really an end-user choice
01:57<int_80h>it also gets no security updates
01:57<Wilduck>hmmm
01:57<Wilduck>I should probably be in unstable then
01:57<int_80h>unstable for newest packages
01:57<int_80h>stable for 'everything works'
01:57<int_80h>lol
01:57<Wilduck>the last time I performed an upgrade though, I lost use of kde
01:58<int_80h>i use stable and backports/unstable pinning for those packages i need up to date
01:58<Wilduck>so now I use Awesome wm
01:58-!-s4br3 [~s4br3@1-1-11-1a.ss.sth.bostream.se] has joined #debian
01:58<int_80h>i also build debian packages from new sources frequently
01:58<int_80h>i use awesome as well
01:58<int_80h>upgrading from one set of packages to another can be tedious. review the list of choices you get from dist-upgrade carefully
01:59<int_80h>you can also do a reinstall with a dpkg --set-selections after install to catch you up with everything you want installed
01:59<Wilduck>sorry, you've lost me
02:00<Wilduck>should I try upgrading to unstable?
02:00<Wilduck>would I just edit my sources.list and do an apt-get update/upgrade?
02:01<int_80h>i might try a dist-upgrade
02:01<int_80h>and you will have the option to confirm
02:01<Wilduck>how would that work?
02:01-!-Celtiore [~Celtiore@ANice-257-1-101-199.w92-143.abo.wanadoo.fr] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:01<int_80h>maybe run a backup first, if you don't have your /home on a separate disk/partition (:
02:01<s4br3>Hi, since an upgrade of my Debian Sid a few days ago my grub2 behaves badly and I get the following boot message ""error: You need to load the kernel first". The culprit seems to be that grub2 does not recognize that my kernels are on a separate partition, but my editing and removing /boot from the kernel path, using 'e' in grubeditor, doesn't survive reboot. Please, what can I do?
02:01<Wilduck>I have it on a separate partition
02:02<sney>Remove any APT source specific to stable (such as volatile), then s/lenny/sid/ on your sources.list and then aptitude update && aptitude install aptitude && aptitude safe-upgrade && aptitude full-upgrade
02:02<int_80h>then go for it. if you're comfortable with testing, i'm sure you'll feel fine in unstable
02:02<int_80h>wow, sney. lots of commands!
02:02<int_80h>i would say apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
02:02<int_80h>lol
02:02<sney>just to make sure apt doesn't get lost in the middle
02:03<Wilduck>last time I tried this, I lost kde functionality, I think it's because I did it from kde
02:03<Wilduck>should I go down to tty1 and try this?
02:03<int_80h>well if it works, you can come back and we can talk about kde separately :P
02:03<sney>yes, the operation would by definition remove kde and replace all of it with new versions
02:03<s4br3>Wildluck, that was perhaps if you switched from 3.x to 4.x
02:03<Wilduck>yeah, it was
02:04<Wilduck>I'm not really interested in going back, I just don't want to lose Awesome =P
02:04<s4br3>Now, it would be from 4.x to 4.x
02:04<s4br3>Or?
02:04-!-eix_ [~flori@p54832983.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #debian
02:04<s4br3>I'm running 4.x and it rulez 3.5
02:04<int_80h>hmm
02:04<int_80h>awesome is better.
02:04<int_80h>:P
02:05<int_80h>almost by definition
02:05<s4br3>sounds like an awesome argument
02:05<Wilduck>haha, so, should I leave X before trying this upgrade though
02:05<Wilduck>I'm sticking with awesome, I don't need kde
02:05<Wilduck>no argument there
02:06<s4br3>Im using both kde and one lightweight but use kde as default
02:06-!-Guest443 is now known as dcraig

02:09<Wilduck>ok

02:09<Wilduck>yeah
02:09<s4br3>What 3D card do you have?

10:02<Diago>ok, i'm not new to the debian scene, however, this is the first time I am attempting to install it on my new machine and I just have 2 questions. My processor is an AMD Phenom 64 Quad-core, will debian support the 4 cores and should i still use the amd64? yes, i know this may sound like a stupid question to most of you, but please, be patient with me.

11:34<locklace>!bigmem
11:34<dpkg>For i386, -bigmem linux-images support up to 64 GB of RAM. If you have more than about 3.4 GB of RAM, install and use this to see everything past the sub ~3.4 GB limit (but with additional CPU overhead). Alternatively, if you have an <amd64> processor, use an amd64 kernel which doesn't need bigmem.

13:16<cusco>its grub configuration, but not grubs fault

Is there a configure script I can run to do some of the setup automatically? I tried dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg, to no avail. The problem is probably that I installed this in a very minimal fashion from a debootstrap install, and I may not have what I need...
