00:38<Froad>I tried dhclient eth0

00:49<gsimmons>Froad: What package are you attempting to install? (e.g. its filename) Which Debian version are you using?
00:49<jmarsden>Froad: Use the command line so you can see the errors and so you stand a chance of having this actually work... why didn't you use apt-get to obtain it from the install media...
00:50<Froad>jmarsden: being lazy, I'm sorry.
00:50<Froad>and didn't know that getting it from the install media was allowed
00:51<jmarsden>Well, since you don't have working networking, you can't get it from an online repository... so the install CD is the next best place to get stuff...
00:52<Froad>OK
00:52<Froad>for dhcp what would I type to apt-get it

03:09<Rhapsody>Well, Debian seems to be losing a lot of stablity here. In KDE, my mouse cursor won't do anything, most keyboard input won't do anything, and the keyboard input that does work is incorrect.

03:11<alfadir>hi, lo does not get 127.0.0.1 on boot.. have to do "sudo ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 up" although I have "auto lo" and "iface lo inet loopback" in /etc/network/interfaces. what am i missing ?
03:11<worried>Hi. I've login in my university and I've forgot to logut. I have ssh access to my user in the same box that I've left the session running
03:11<Rhapsody>The only correlation I can see is that both times the problem appeared, CPU and RAM usage were very high. That's not an explanation though.
03:11<worried>Can I logout myself remotely?
03:12<jmarsden>worried: Sure, ssh in and kill all processes of yours except those related to the ssh session :)
03:12<alfadir>worried: ps aux | grep username to see all the processes you are running there..
03:12<alfadir>worried: kill what is needed
03:13<worried>thanks
03:13<jmarsden>alfadir: using the a option seems odd... why would you display processes of other users?? ps ux should be plenty ?

23:31<puff>chealer: Yes.
23:32<puff>chealer: it just says "sets the package seletons", it doesn't say where, or how.
23:33<chealer>puff: what do you have in mind for where or how?
23:33<sime>hi
23:34<sime>I run debian SID and since july my computer system freeze....i cant still mouve the mouse cursor but and c ant do anything...
23:34<puff>chealer: As I asked.
23:34<puff>Is dpkg --set-selections additive, i.e. if I run dpkg --set-selections twice, will it combine the two lists or will it set the selections only to the old list?
23:35<puff>I see nothing in the man page that either answers or points towards what gets altered and how, so I could examine it for myself.
23:35<puff>Another tack: I did dpkg --get-selectoins > oldboxselectons.txt and then on the new box did dpkg --get-selections < oldboxselectoins.txt.
23:36<puff>Then tried sudo aptitude --download-only install.
23:36<puff>apt reported dependency conflicts that look to be quite thorny.
23:36<puff>Can I now "un-set" those set-selections?
23:36<puff>Selectiosn were set but never actually installed.

23:46<puff>sime: sounds like a resource problem.
23:46<puff>sime: I've seen very similar behavior in the past, with a laptop that had a flaky memory slot.
23:46<puff>sime: I've also seen similar stuff happen on a machine that ran out of disk on /.
23:47<puff>sime: Which is not to say that either case is precisely what is happening to you, but those symptoms seem to be a common failure mode when X runs out of resoruces.
23:47<sime>thank you! I / runs out of disk it will show in syslog?
23:47<sime>sorry for my poor english
23:49<puff>sime: I'm not sure... possibly, but then again if /var/log/syslog is on the disk that runs otu of space.... no.
23:49<sime>i understand

23:52<zzz>Hello, is there anyone using Sid? I cannot print - CUPS gives errors. Bug 558463 suggests that this problem was fixed but it looks like it wasn't. Can anyone confirm?

23:55<sney>zzz: unfortunately the dynamic nature of sid means that hardly anyone can keep up long enough to provide support
23:56<sney>if you're using sid you're expected to be able to support it yourself
23:56<zzz>sney: I just hoped that someone else might have had the same problem - that I wasn't alone. I guess I will reply to the bug I mentioned.
23:56<sney>that'll be your best bet
