03:55<jm_>not sure how to interprete it, would need to look in source code

04:08<jmm>I'm not sure to understand what you want.
04:08<jm_>ok we're not on the same track :) - I think you don't understand how this works; one can set the hostname with the hostname command or by editing /etc/hostname - if this is set to long form, bash will work as you expect it
04:09<jmm>/etc/hostname can't use long name.
04:09<kubyz>buenos días compañeros :))
04:09<jm_>of course it can
04:09<jmm>if you do, then fqdn will be like
04:09<jmm>on my host /etc/hostname just have 'debianizer'
04:10<jm_>not really
04:10<jm_>not on properly configured systems anyway
04:11<jmm>it's interesting, because computers at my new job get those problems.
04:11<jmm>people didn't edited /etc/hosts, and just wrote fqdn in /etc/hostname .
04:11<jmm>I was planning to replace all by short names.

18:03<dpkg>hmm... trunk is a term from version control systems such as <cvs> <svn> and <git>. The "trunk" can often be thought of as a developer's playground and the stability (or otherwise) of the code there varies from project to project. See also

22:43<Guest307>so i am considering submitting a bug, because i have wrote some code in my life and dont understand why the following is happening. I downloaded the xfce+lxde debian iso and installed it only to find that most of the usual themes i am used to having were missing. I thought i would just copy them over from xubuntu (i know the evil distro). Well i did that and the new themes did not show up in the user interface box, not only that but
22:43<Guest307>now i have to start xfwm4 myself from the console command line. In a haste to fix the issue i copied the orginal themes (i made a backup) but nothing has changed
22:43-!-Guest307 is now known as bazzled
22:43-!-BCDN [] has joined #debian
22:44<bazzled>I figured that xfwm4 would load the files included in the theme when it loaded so I fail to understand why all the sudden xfwm4 is not loading automatically. if anyone has any clue as to why please let me know so i dont have to submit a bug report.
22:45<kenyon>did you check for an existing bug report?
22:45<bazzled>i have also asked in the xfce channel on to no avail. I think they are stumped also.
22:45<bazzled>kenyon: yes i have but have found nothing conclusive to my pariticular situtation.
22:46<kenyon>you would need to give more information for people to help
22:48<bazzled>its odd, because my impression of the situation is that xfwm4 is loaded by gdm via some configuration files, i absolutely fail to understand how copying some files into /usr/share/themes affected anything in paritucular to do with starting up xfwm4, neither can i find any documentation regarding any error log files from xfwm4, its very strange!

22:51<bazzled>kenyon: well, I need more info myself, i think i am going to look at the some documentation for x from the blfs project (beyond linux from scratch) and see if any of the configuruation files have been changed in the last day . my theory is that some script noticed i modified the files in /usr/share/themes and now refusing to load xfwm4 for some bone-headed reason

22:51<kenyon>how about error messages or log entries
22:52<jmarsden>bazzled: I'd suggest starting over, and documenting what happens, step by step... (1) Do a fresh install from which CD (downloaded from what URL? with what MD5 checksum?) ; (2) test the result installation. Does it work as designed? Document how you tested and what the results were. (3) Copy exactly which files from where to where using what command(s)? (4) retest. You need a clear and detailed set of "steps to reproduce" that anyone else could dupl
22:52<jmarsden>icate. Then you might get more help from others.
22:52<bazzled>i looked at my .xsession file earliler, it looks for the keyboard twice, there is nothing in the xorg.0.log either, i should look at gdm
22:53<BCDN>I am running my own mail server. I've been using webmail for a while. Today I was attempting to setup thunderbird for a new user. I get all kinds of errors when trying to send. IMAP appears to work fine, SMTP does not work at all. It used to work SASL/TLS when I used TB. (Ihave lenny and postfix.)
22:53-!-streuner__ [] has joined #debian
22:53<bazzled>jmarsden: i would love to do that but i have already put a lot of work into customizing this distro and the thought of starting over is unbearable
22:54<jmarsden>One machine, how many days... just tar up the /etc ... how "unbearable" can it be? You *are* documenting your work, right?
22:54<kenyon>bazzled: then I and other people would assume your customizations are the problem
22:54<bazzled>jmarsden: it seems i would spend a couple of hours of time to reproduce exactly the same results.... though from a bug-finding standpoint it would make things easier
22:55<bazzled>jmarsden: well, history is documenting some of my changes, but i havent look at how many lines it saves by defualt, i have removed and added some packages via aptitude also.
22:55<kenyon>BCDN: pastebin your errors.
22:56*bazzled is going to go look at the gdm files and look for those errors that are invisble in the other files.

22:56<jmarsden>bazzled: OK. If you don't have a couple of hours to spend on clearly documenting the issue, I *definitely* don't have time to spend duplicating your setup here so I can help you.

22:58<kenyon>well, did you investigate why it is "unable to open Berkeley db /etc/sasldb2: No such file or directory"?
22:59<snogglethorpe>did you install the saslwhatever package?
23:00<bazzled>jmarsden: i understand, totally i have already invested (x) amount of hours, i would rather spend (x) amount of hours understanding exactly what went wrong rather then doing a reinstall all because i copied some theme files in /usr/share/themes
23:01-!-streuner_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:01<BCDN>Thats just it. It's supposed to be using the system passwds. The file /etc/sasldb2 doesn't exist but postfix is in a chroot jail and the jail has a copy of the sasldb2 file that comes in the package. and Yes I have all the necessary sasl packages.
23:01<bazzled>right now, i am looking for gdm error logs , i know they are here somewhere but not listed on the man page grrr
