02:22<sney>you mean find actual files on the shares themselves?
02:22<jimmy>yeah exactly - so if i wanted to find all of the mp3s shared on network for example
02:23<jimmy>hmm maybe this is what i need: http://searchsmb.sourceforge.net
02:23<sney>looks about right
02:24<sney>I haven't heard of anything else that can do it - of course you can find files in any mounted filesystem, but that's not useful for searching entire windows networks

04:48<kenyon>simplechat: just set which servers you want to use in ntp.conf

04:49<diggy>lothar: try to run "xrandr"
04:49<kenyon>you don't want to have two machines synching with each other
04:49<simplechat>ie. in my /etc/ntpd.conf i have listen on 0.0.0.0 server 192.168.3.200 and servers au.pool.ntp.org

04:50<kenyon>I don't think it works like that
04:50<simplechat>mmm?

13:17<jaimesilva>I'm thrilled to find out that my mencoder version is so outdated! Has mencoder been removed from the official repositories? according to http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=mencoder there is no trace of mencoder there! so what now? must I go back to debian-multimedia? I don't like it, it breakes a lot!

21:52<qabulin>okay, i've been fighting with an install from a usb most of the day :(
21:52<felidio>someone know about free software on mac os 9?
21:52<tp43>qabulin, can't boot?
21:52<qabulin>ive done the mounting of the boot.img, copied the info over, copied over the iso... it boots just fine, but for some reason it cannot find the .iso.
21:53<qabulin>tp43, i've checked it... rebuilt the usb... but for some reason, it wont recognize the .iso.
21:53<tp43>qabulin, thats wierd, what step, does the installer start?
21:55<qabulin>tp43: it starts, i select to start the installation, when it scans for an .iso, it returns that one cannot be found. I have to use the CD1 iso. b/c I do not have network with the current kernel in the installer.
21:56<qabulin>so i was just going to install CD1 of the latest Lenny, manually install a later kernel... but it wont acknowledge my .iso. O_o
21:56<tp43>qabulin, not sure, I think if the installer starts, then you are fine, just do the steps, install base system

21:59<tp43>qabulin, cd1 is the iso
21:59<tp43>if it boots and the installer starts, then you are good to go

22:00<qabulin>here, i followed these directions: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC/HowTo/InstallUsingStandardInstaller

22:00<tp43>qabulin, that is net install, you need cd1
22:00<qabulin>followed all the steps... boots PERFECTLY... the next step is to load the kernel..... NO KERNEL / ISO found.
22:01<qabulin>AGAIN, scroll down to "Variation for Models without Networking"
22:01<qabulin>the first sentence refers to the CD.

23:33<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution and will often be able to come up with a solution where apt-get just gives up. It has advanced search capabilities (see <aptitude search>). Like apt-get, it can also remove or purge one package at the same time as installing others all from the command line or at the Y/n/q/? prompt using its interactive resolver, making it much easier to recover from broken dependencies.
23:33<adb> stable ? better use "lenny"

23:34<locsmif>adb: I am following the site that offers the mirrors
23:34<kop>adb: Good point.
23:34<locsmif>better do what they say..
23:35<locsmif>he'll get a free automatic upgrade in time ;-)

23:35<kop>locsmif: If you use "stable" when the release changes you will upgrade automatically. Which will often break your system because a simple "aptitude safe-upgrade" (or whatever) is never the recommended upgrade approach.
23:35<R1CH>ahh got it working, for some reason i had to specify the package as libevent-1.4-2
23:36<kop>locsmif: I.e. Automatic upgrades of major releases are broken upgrades.
23:37<ml|>yeah not good idea to use stable in sources.list when running stable; best to read release notes abd do it manually

23:40<locsmif>perhaps the aptitude users have a hard life
23:40<locsmif>;-)
23:40<ml|>why?

23:41<kop>ml|: He's just poking back at me because I poked at him because he's recommending apt-get instead of aptitude.
23:41<locsmif>Different interpretations of Suggests: and Recommends: , different dependency resolving
23:41<etzerd>locsmif: I'm not trying to be hard here, but why the software did not recongnize the wireless card? every other distro does.
23:41<ml|>ah, aptitude ftw; use what you like ;P
23:41<locsmif>As a matter of fact: I'd like to switch to aptitude at some point
23:42<eightyeight>etzerd: what wireless card?
23:42<etzerd>intel
23:42<kop>locsmif: Where's the pain? Why can't you just do it?
23:42<eightyeight>etzerd: intal what?
23:42<kop>etzerd: Type "lspci" and give us the output.
23:42<kop>!tell etzerd about paste
23:43<kop>etzerd: We only need the line for the wireless device.
23:43<etzerd>thanks kop, let me do that
23:43<eightyeight>s/al/el/
23:43<locsmif>etzerd: could be due to licensing issues, which Debian tends to take a little more seriously than most
23:44<locsmif>etzerd: that means firmware could be missing, and may need to install that from non-free, who knows
23:44<eightyeight>that's my guess
23:44<kop>etzerd: Although intel has been pretty good when it comes to licensing of late. (From my position of ignorance at least.)
23:44<etzerd>09:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. Device 002a (rev 01)
23:44<etzerd>0a:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 02)
23:44<locsmif>kop: it's a bit of faction based/clan based dichotomy
23:45<eightyeight>etzerd: that's not intel
23:45<locsmif>distro builders like frugal packaging
23:45<locsmif>aptitude likes to pull
23:45<locsmif>no offense

23:47<adb>etzerd, lspci -nn | grep Wi
23:47<kop>eightyeight: There's a atheros factoid, but I can't tell from his output what chipset he has. Is there an easy way you can explain why to me?
23:48<ml|>ah, judd is not around to possibly help ;(
23:48<locsmif>kop: the Realtek says "Ethernet"
23:48<locsmif>hmm
23:48<kop>locsmif: I thought that was wired.
23:49<eightyeight>kop: i hate bots. they just add noise to the channel, especially when people love to reach for them at every possible support question
23:49<locsmif>kop: wouldn't there be sth in dmesg
23:49<locsmif>complsining about firmware
23:49<kop>locsmif: -nn is good. I should read more manpages. Thing is, I already have, but then they go and upgrade them. Too bad there's no summary of what's new.
23:49<eightyeight>kop: further, no, that output doesn't say his model. just that it's atheros, and not intel
23:50<eightyeight>kop: i would run dmidecode personally
23:50<kop>eightyeight: I find it helpful. And while it may be more verbose than required it saves on typing and saves on making an accidental mistake. !tell does not add much noise.
