01:32<MidnightAssassin>Answer me this... If I installed a minimal Debian (Lenny) system to my computer, installed Fluxbox via a .deb package to that system, and rebooted, Fluxbox would be usable... Right
01:33<goodger>you'd likely not need to reboot

01:33<jar>i dont see why youd need to reboot
01:33<goodger>and you could install it from debian's repositories rather than messing around with debs yourself
01:33<jar>goodger: his deb might be a svn version or something
01:33*jar shrug
01:34<MidnightAssassin>Well, when I installed GNOME on a minimal system via apt-get, I had to reboot
01:34<MidnightAssassin>Plus, I barely know the first thing about connecting to a wireless network via a terminal
01:34<jar>MidnightAssassin: that's because gnome is a beast that requires packages that start at boot
01:34<MidnightAssassin>jar - That figures

08:17<gsimmons>theocrite: You can't report a bug on a virtual package, they're 'Provided:' by other packages (i.e. they exist logically, not physically). What package are you installing that requires you to satisfy provision of httpd-cgi?
08:17<gsimmons>s/Provided/Provides/
08:18<theocrite>gsimmons: that was a general question. I tried to install redmine that made me install apache even though nginx was installed. According to the bug you showed me, I guess it's not a bug, it's meant to be like that.

12:13<Nazcafan_>I googled a little
12:13<Nazcafan_>and found that "iwconfig wlan0 power off" stopped that spamming from the wireless driver
12:14<Nazcafan_>it works, but I would like to automate it
12:14<Nazcafan_>I guess I must add some entry in /etc/network/interfaces, but I don't know what syntax to use

15:32<Mike632T>I'm having a bit of a problem reconfiguring grub. I've copied a working installation to a new SATA disk using dd and installed it in a new machine - it starts to boot but I get a message waiting for root file system and eventually it drops out to a prompt. Tried booting a rescue disk modifying menu.lst and running update-grub but though the menu entries are changed it makes no diffeence. I'm out of ideas for now..

22:11<twb>Is there a trivial way to roll a xen dom0 kernel for sid?
22:11<sney>grab the config for the standard one, enable ext4 support, compile?
22:12<twb>sney: AFAICT ext4 is in that kernel -- but it's "marked as test code" and refuses to let itself be used.
22:12<twb>This is the 2.6.26-2-xen-amd64 kernel that I got from sid
22:12<sney>ah, 2.6.26
22:12<twb>Right now all I care about is getting ANY kernel to boot as a dom0
22:13<sney>rolling kernels in general is a pretty straightforward process, with the right config as a starting point it's downright easy
22:13<twb>plan B might be to make a new ext3 LV and just copy everything from the root fs into it.

22:53<Undarl>Priya: So, you can ssh into the box from within your home network but not from outside?
22:53-!-sortadi [~sortadi@190.39.177.151] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
22:53<priya>yes
22:56<priya>so what can i do to fix this problem
22:57<Undarl>Are you running a router? My first suspicion is that a router is not set up to forward ssh to your debian box.
22:57<priya>yes i am
22:58<priya>im running linksys with tomato frimware
23:00<Undarl>Convenient. So am I. :) Login to the router and have a look at port forwarding?
23:00<priya>ok

23:01-!-angasule [~angasule@190.176.225.167] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
23:02<priya>what should i look for in that area
23:04<Undarl>I have the usual suspects on my home network assigned static IPs by the router. Frex, my laptop is always 192.168.1.2. I then created an entry in basic port forwarding that forwards the SSH port (22) to that IP.
23:04<Undarl>That is, granted, not the safest way to do it. A safer method would be to pick a random higher port number that you can remember and forward that port to 22 on your debian box.
23:05<priya>ok so make a port forward entry to my debian linux server ip with port 22
23:05<priya>ok lets try the easy way first
23:06<Undarl>Sure. Does your debian box have a static DHCP entry?

23:08<priya>ok
23:08<priya>yes it does
23:08<priya>so just port forward to the linux ip
23:09<Undarl>Yep. Enter 22 for Ext Port and the static dhcp addy for Int Address.
23:09<Undarl>Should pass any port 22 request that hits the router straight to your debian box then.
23:09<priya>should i use tcp or udp or both
23:09<Undarl>Both is fine.
23:10<Undarl>Save it, let the router reboot, and try sshing to your external IP and see what happens. :)
23:12<priya>u mean my main ip addy not the router assingned ip on lan
23:13-!-dean [~dean@225.sub-75-222-121.myvzw.com] has joined #debian
23:13<Undarl>Right. That's what you'll be hitting from the outside, so it's the way to test whether your forward worked.
23:14<priya>ok
23:14<dean>hello
23:15<Undarl>'lo, dean.
23:15<priya>butiful it worked
23:15<Undarl>Excellent.
23:15<priya>ok now for the better way how we do that
23:15-!-rage [~rage@AAmiens-157-1-23-92.w86-196.abo.wanadoo.fr] has quit [Quit: Quitte]
23:16<dean>umm wat is this exactly?
23:17<Undarl>Well, ideally you don't want to expose an obvious ssh port to the outside world where nasty folk might stumble across it. Best way to avoid that is to pick a random high port number that you'll remember easily. Enter that for Ext Port in the forward, and 22 for Int Port. Then ssh with the -p option and your made-up fort number.
23:18-!-dean [~dean@225.sub-75-222-121.myvzw.com] has quit []
23:19<priya>so in putty i leave the port number at 22 or change that to my new port number
23:19<Undarl>Change it.
23:19<priya>ok lets try
23:20<jar>im installing windows 3.11 in DOSBOX, i need to go vomit
23:20<Undarl>Hehe.

23:23<priya>awsome thanks that worked nicely
23:23<Undarl>Rock. :)
23:23<Undarl>Glad I could help.
23:24<priya>next question if outside my ip pc does not have putty do i need to install that or is thier another way to login into the server without putty like web interface
23:25<priya>i just started to learn linux a few weeks ago
23:26<Undarl>Well, you need an ssh client of some sort. Linux/Unix installs usually have it by default. Putty is an easy download for Win. Not sure about Mac. A quick websearch tells me that there seem to be some web and Java clients floating around as well that you might look into.
23:28<Undarl>Not sure how trustworthy the web ones would be, though.
23:28<priya>ok i will look into that
23:28<priya>but doing it this way much safer
23:29<priya>is putty good to use on win side or is thier other better ones to use
23:31<Undarl>There may be better ones, but Putty has the advantage of being small and solid and has been around for a while. I'm not really up on the options, though -- I rarely venture into my WinXP partition these days.
23:34<priya>ic i apprciate your help thanks but now i need to run going out for dinner i will talk to u later
23:34<Undarl>Have a good one.
