00:00<doobiean>themes are easy to add and change - a theme in e17 changes icons, window boarder and curser, and background even if you want - and i like the big shadows :)

00:01-!-antony65 [] has joined #debian
00:01<jar>doobiean: i hate window managers that try to theme the cursor
00:02<jar>i always made sure to fix that in e16

00:02-!-antony65 [] has quit []
00:02<doobiean>yea, they have a setting to use the gnome default if you want to
00:03<sney>I worked on a distro that was going to ship with e17 as the default wm, and our default theme just had the regular ol black pointer. e17 at the time flowed pretty nice and we were working towards making it point and click power user-able
00:03<sney>but then some crazy shit happened in my life and i fell off the internet for a bit, and when I came back the distro team had fallen apart. oh well :/
00:03<sney>debian is better anyway.
00:04<jar>i used to dislike debian because apt's reverse dependency checking sucked at the time
00:04<jar>but now it's fantastic
00:05<sney>yeah, aptitude is really a great thing
00:05<jar>well i dont use anything but apt anymore
00:05<doobiean>i tried elive for a while, but i think using debian with works better
00:05-!-artista_frustrado [] has joined #debian
00:07-!-rcoph [] has joined #debian
00:07<doobiean>although elive makes a decent live disk.
00:07<jar>i prefer CLI only livedisks
00:07<jar>faster boot
00:07<jar>but then again the only time i ever use a live disk is to do sysadmin crap
00:07-!-quietman [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:08<jar>debian hasn't broken my computer(s) in years
00:08<jar>can't say the same for my time on gentoo
00:08<doobiean>they have a cool version of e17 called ecomorph with compiz built in - works like a charm
00:08<jar>that makes no sense
00:08<jar>a window manager with a window manager built in?
00:09-!-fedito [] has joined #debian
00:09<sney>e17 as I recall is meant to be a desktop manager
00:09<jar>oh, they just porting the compositing stuff from compiz to e16
00:09<jar>it's not ACTUALLY compiz
00:09<jar>its about time someone did that
00:10<jar>sorry, im kind of a negative nancy about e17
00:10<jar>most of the e17 devs i knew have since quit the project
00:11<doobiean>it works though - better than i can get it to work with gnome - instead of installing e17, install ecomorph.
00:11<jar>yeah, i switched to xfce from openbox3
00:11<jar>i got tired of managing my own menu items
00:13<doobiean>setting up hotkeys in openbox is cool though - i did get tired of the 'box' look after awhile.
00:13<jar>Yeah, I use ob3 for years and years.
00:14<jar>my desktop journey has been kinda boring

00:18<jar>its the basis of GNOME3
00:18<jar>it seems like a big step BACKWARDS in usability
00:18<doobiean>arghhh blahhh
00:19<jar>gnome 1.4 is 100x more usable than that IMHO
00:19<doobiean>why do they insist on making a bad looking windows 7 - cmon folks
00:19<jar>i think the only GNOME apps i use on a daily basis are GEdit and uhh... Cheese.

00:31<jar>im trying to drum up some freelance work locally but people here are super cheap when it comes to anything tech related.
00:34<doobiean>i'm good at building desktops and using business stuff like office - i always get people wanting me to do shit for them - it's rarely worth it financially most the time.

00:43<Chubbz>jar: well, i'm trying to make a raidz setup, i have 3 x 2 TB drive with the forst 10 GB of each drive partitioned for the host OS, in this case, debian
00:44<jar>sweet, that's way beyond my skillset w/ zfs unfortunately

00:46<doobiean>hm, does eveylittle thing work - flash? etc...
00:46<jar>i run 32bit because im too lazy to reinstall
00:47<EmleyMoor>I've installed a RAID setup via the installer - not afterwards yet
00:47<Chubbz>doobiean: yeah, flash works, its in alpha and you have to compile FF manually, but its worth it imo

20:48<sney>it is possible and often easy to dual-boot debian and windows. programs like parted can be used to edit your partition table, shrink your existing partitions, and make room for a debian installation. This supposedly works quite well though I haven't tried it personally.

20:52<Ipsilon>well, my second concern as I mentioned is it deleting the allocation table on the drive that it installs into
20:53-!-chealer [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
20:53<sney>the partition table, you mean? parted edits the partition table as part of its main function. It won't delete it but it will change it.
20:54<JordiGH>Ipsilon: Why would it delete the allocation table? How would it know where stuff is? :-/
20:54<Ipsilon>Someone told me it happened to him
20:54<Ipsilon>just wanted to make sure this wasn't the case
20:54<JordiGH>Someone is mistaken.
20:54<JordiGH>Someone probably clicked "next next next" too eagerly.
20:55<JordiGH>Wait, allocation table, isn't that FAT?
20:55<sney>it's remotely possible for a partition table to become corrupt during any kind of hard drive activity. it was probably a coincidence, like nearly all "my hard drive died, and THIS is what caused it" theories.
20:55*JordiGH still blames that -trunk Linux for a hard drive error recently.
20:55<Ipsilon>well it's not the hard drive dying
20:56<Ipsilon>it's the hard drive getting a sort of quick-format
20:56<sney>ok, you're definitely talking about the partition table, so get your terms straight
20:56<Ipsilon>the information is there.. its just not addressed or whatever

20:56<sney>and like anything it's possible but very very unlikely as part of a linux installation
20:57<JordiGH>Ipsilon: Allocation tables are for a kind of MSFT filesystem. They're independent of the partition table. Some partitions (e.g. FAT partitions) have allocation tables; Linux uses a completely different filesystem, but shares partition data with Windows.
20:57<JordiGH>(or with anything else, apples, pufferfishies)

20:58<sney>I am sure Ipsilon will be reading the manuals before he does anything, JordiGH.
20:59<JordiGH>Ipsilon: My guess is that what happened to your friend is that for whatever reason Debian couldn't tell that there was a Windows installed (this happened when Vista was very new, I think), and just didn't put an entry in Grub for it.
20:59-!-klh [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
21:00<Ipsilon>It's not that he couldn't but windows. It's that windows didn't see the partition. Because it wasn't there anymore. It's hard to explain when i don't knwo the real term for it. But whatever is deleted in a quick format.. where the data just waiting to be replaced
21:01<sney>But it doesn't really matter what happened to Ipsilon's buddy. Partition resizing is known to work. Backups are a good idea when doing any kind of hard drive restructuring, but you probably won't need them. And the Debian installer does not delete or break anything unless you specifically tell it to.

21:02<Ipsilon>"In order to set up a dual-boot you'll need to over-write the MBR (Master Boot Record) of your hard-drive, and if you mess that up you could lose access to your entire system." this is what got me worried in the instructions i was readign
21:02<sney>it's a disclaimer. nothing to worry about in 99% of situations.
21:02<JordiGH>Ipsilon: Uh, Windows doesn't like it when another OS messes with its partitions, so it schedules a chkdsk at boot time. Or maybe it's ntfs-3g who schedules it. At any rate, when you boot the resized Windows partition for the first time, Windows is going to check it.

21:04<JordiGH>sney: Ipsilon is talking about Windows.
21:05<sney>no, ipsilon was talking bout his debian install and if it would damage $other_os on his disks. Windows was irrelevant since all he needed too know was about D-I's disk restructuring procedures.

21:08<JordiGH>That's a bit of an outdated instruction... for when 512 megs was a lot.
21:08<Ipsilon>2 swap?
