03:57<clinton>I was thinking of setting up a testing/unstable distribution "inside" my stable debian box. I've read how to do this with chroot but I'm concerned as it won't be running an unstable kernel that things might break. I also want to be able to edit files in my testing/unstable area from the stable area (but not the other way around). Basically I want to set up an unstable box inside my own for development work without having to move to test

08:15<imperia>hello. latest version of google-chrome has wrong dependency(lsb). so i installed it manually with dpkg --ignore-depends=lsb so i dont need to download 100mb more. now when I do aptitude it tries to install lsb again. so I edited the .deb control file and removed requirement for lsb. then i purged chrome and installed it again. but now aptitude still knows that chrome requires lsb. :(

08:17<imperia>how can i force aptitude to ignore unmet reqirements. or how does aptitude knows that chrome requires lsb.
08:17<mjt>imperia: aptitude looks at the archives not at your locally installed version.
08:17<mjt>and i guess it offers to re-install it
08:17<mjt>because the control info does not match

08:18<mjt>in order to fake it, pretend you installed lsb of the "right" version.

08:18-!-vera [~Ve_ra@] has quit []
08:18<mjt>but i guess that's for a reason
08:18<mjt>the dependency, that is
08:18<imperia>i dont want to install lsb at all
08:18<imperia>it works without it
08:18<Sebastian_Cobaleda>I am from colombia
08:19<imperia>and lsb has like 50-60mb of dependencies. not good for my eeepc slim squeeze :)
08:19<mjt>imperia: most likely it wants some init scripts

08:20<mjt>but ok, equivs is your friend...
08:20<mjt>or just create a dummy entry in /var/lib/dpkg/status

08:25<mjt>never, ever, do that!
08:25<mjt>ok, there are several backups of that file around

23:06<twb>I always roll proper .debs
23:06<sney>xwd: you can try if you want but if it breaks we probably can't help you
23:07<ml|>xwd: did you that before installing it the debian way?
23:07<xwd>I didn't know what directory to point it to.
23:07<xwd>I've tried installing packages downloaded from the website, but those didn't work.

23:08<xwd>As in, they made Iceweasel crash when there was a page with flash content.

23:08<twb>That's what the plugin is SUPPOSED to do
23:09<ml|>no it's not
23:09<xwd>I should try purging Iceweasel?
23:10<geckos>I think so.. but you already try with a fresh epiphany-installation and doesn't work..
23:10<ml|>xwd: yes I would try that and plugins and remove whatever that installer did, whatever that is
23:10<xwd>The installer never actually ran.
23:11<ml|>< xwd> As in, they made Iceweasel crash when there was a page with flash content. ??
23:11<xwd>I used .deb packages
23:12<xwd>from the website, not the tarbell'd installer
23:12<ml|>from abobe?
23:12<geckos>there is a LD_LIBRARY_PATH in your environment ???

23:14<ml|>for the record I don't like flash either, but that's what's being used atm; hope html5 or something does away with that crap and silverlight
23:14<twb>xwd: flash is like java or mono -- it's primary purpose is to consume resources so people can justify upgrading their hardware every year

23:15<xwd>I'm on a EeePC, it worked fine with the provided Xandros-based OS but that was with Firefox 2.
23:16<ml|>twb: I doubt _anybody_ likes flash, but that is what the web is about now sadly
23:17<sney>and besides we are here to provide support for people doing things officially supported by the Debian OS, which includes flash
23:18<xwd>I appreciate your help, btw
23:18<sney>wish I knew the solution, xwd

23:26<sney>iceweasel does use .mozilla though
23:27<ml|>yes, just like ff

23:27<jar>it has to for extension compatability
23:27<sney>I have dreadful luck with the *zilla browsers, I just use chrome these days
23:28<jar>i recently switched back to FF from Chrome
23:28<jar>chrome somehow manages to have worse gtk support than firefox
23:28<jar>with half the customizationj
23:28<sney>it is a little proprietary looking
23:28<ml|>font rendering for me using chrome is horrible, so I stay with ff :)
