00:50<rastasean>whats up
00:50<chrisf826>not much, looking at the new debian stable
00:50<chrisf826>5.0 looks really nice
00:50<rastasean>whats your system?
00:51<chrisf826>i am using a p4 stepping 9 (early northbirdge) 2.6 ghz
00:51<chrisf826>768 mb of ram
00:51<chrisf826>not the fancu multi core p4's
00:52<meowcats>debian stable is nice, but somewhat outdated packages

00:52-!-vsayer05 [] has joined #debian
00:52<chrisf826>it seems that debian was shooting for reliability
00:52<chrisf826>making that decision
00:53<meowcats>yes, but its hard to find support for such old apps
00:53<meowcats>like firefox 3.0
00:53-!-simonrvn [] has joined #debian
00:53<meowcats>hard to find plugins

00:55<meowcats>i just did a clean install of squeeze last night, now i just need to configure alsa

00:56-!-bja [] has quit [Quit: Strength and Honor]
00:56<jordanb>Debian stable isn't really a desktop OS.
00:56<meowcats>yes, and the packages go through a testing phase in the unstable branch before they are put into testing/squeeze
00:56<jordanb>Debian testing works much better for that.
00:56<chrisf826>ahh cool
00:57-!-mode/#debian [+l 368] by debhelper
00:57<chrisf826>this is the official debian channel?
00:57<meowcats>yes, so things are somewhat unstable in testing, but it wont break as much as unstable
00:57<meowcats>and yes, packages are *very* current
00:57<chrisf826>thanks :)
00:57-!-Guest203 [simon@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:58<chrisf826>i am thinking of replacing my scanner
00:58<meowcats>get an hp
00:58<chrisf826>its the only device i have that the unix scanner libs does not support these days
00:58<chrisf826>yeah i heard that hp's are the most robustly supported
00:59<meowcats>im unfortunate to own an ATI 4850
00:59<meowcats>kick ass card
00:59<meowcats>but ATI kind of ignores linux
00:59<chrisf826>i own a canon lide 600
00:59<chrisf826>god awful...
01:00<chrisf826>i have found out how to make it do some things inlinux, somsone i found on the net hacked the thing
01:00-!-vsayer [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:00<chrisf826>and i extended the hacks
01:00<chrisf826>the phillips chipset this device uses is very strange
01:00<jordanb>I have an epson.
01:00<meowcats>i installed KDE for a while last night to see it (i come from xfce)
01:00<jordanb>It sues that iscan software.
01:00<chrisf826>its a high level type interface
01:00-!-roger [] has joined #debian
01:01<meowcats>it was an awful experience!
01:01<jordanb>It's kinda crappy but it produces good results.
01:01<chrisf826>jordanb: iscan uses a high level assembly language api to access the chip
01:01<chrisf826>jordanb: the function calls appear to be high level fairly, simple
01:02<chrisf826>but i am not familiar with the chip to do much with it
01:02-!-resmo__ [] has joined #debian
01:02-!-vsayer05 [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
01:02<jordanb>Maybe somebody could make libsane work as well as iscan, but currently the quality with the latter is much better.
01:02<chrisf826>the chip also has 10 reprogarmmable lines that you can assign software macros
01:03<chrisf826>to do various scan steppings
01:03-!-vsayer05 [] has joined #debian
01:03<chrisf826>jordanb: i bet canon doesnt like the fact that major oem's will not package their devices with their boxes now
01:04<chrisf826>jordanb: due to not being cross platform
01:04-!-roger [] has quit []
01:05<chrisf826>jordanb: yeah dell/hp and a couple others have certain platform support requirements for their boards
01:05<chrisf826>jordanb: and what is packaged with the machines
01:05<chrisf826>for consumers
01:05<jordanb>What does that have to do with iscan?
01:06<chrisf826>not directly
01:06<chrisf826>but canon does not publish any support for non windows devices
01:06<chrisf826>for most of their products
01:07<jordanb>Yeah when I bought my epson I recall doing research and finding that, at the time, it had the best linux support.
01:07<jordanb>I just wish I could get good results out of libsane rather than having to use iscan.
01:07<jordanb>But as much as I use it, I can get by with iscan.
01:09<chrisf826>ahh the best support is the hp multi function machines

01:13<chrisf826>interesting geek stuff
01:13<chrisf826>on that scanner
01:14<muaylek>I tried to installed again but I stuck at choosing a partition
01:14<jordanb>muaylek: Which step in the installation?
01:14<muaylek>guided: partition is too small.
01:14<jordanb>If you did it when it was writing the partition information you might have scrambled your disk.
01:15<meowcats>choose guided, but then change the size of it :p

07:49<kop>ManiDhillon: Or there may be some other frobbing. I know there's a special package for the eee.
07:49<icebrain>it's probably the graphic drivers, Ubuntu uses the official (closed-source) by default, doesn't it?

11:31<dpkg>i heard amd64 is the Debian architecture optimized for x86-64, aka AMD64. Consider using Debian i386 on x86-64 machines if you do not have a good reason to use Debian amd64. The amd64 architecture also supports running i386 Debian with either a -686 or -amd64 kernel. core2duo machines are amd64. See and the #debian-amd64 IRC channel on OFTC and freenode. See also <why amd64>.

22:07<wally1337>ok so here is my question: I installed debian 5.0 on the 23rd of feb. I wrote down my root password and was able to su to root to perform admin activities up until friday the 26th of feb when I went away. The computer was shutdown and the only odity that happened was booting into windows xp for abit of gaming that day. I get back on sunday feb 28th from a holiday and my root password absoloutely does not work, even after
22:07<wally1337> being checked a few times. Admittedly I did type it in incorrectly about 5 times however I soon double checked it with my written down password and typed it in correctly. Now it keeps saying it's the wrong password. What the heck has happened?

22:10<stack_underflow>I want to switch to google dns: , would I use "Changing DNS server settings on a Debian server" or "Configuring DHCP client software on a Debian server"?
22:10-!-Guest278 is now known as Ben90
22:10<Ben90>can someone please help me?
22:10<dpkg>Knoppix is _not_ Debian. Seek Knoppix help in freenode's #knoppix. Knoppix is a live CD distribution which is <based on Debian>, useful as a rescue CD, to test hardware, and for situations where you have access to a computer but it isn't Debian. unofficial: <Debian-live> is the Debian equivalent for publishing live systems.
22:10<edhunter>wally1337: i think simplest thing to do would be to use a liveCD, change passwd and be done with it. no clue what the problem might be (unauthorized access perhaps?)

23:34<freddy>ctrl: the package builder works. it has its own scripts/tools to pull apart the installer. so does not rely on the setup.gtk2 binary.
