#debian IRC Logs for 2010-03-02

---Logopened Tue Mar 02 00:00:38 2010
00:01<JustRob>Ok, next question. What's the best way to have a plain text file be readable on both linux and windows systems, without having to deal with newline issues between systems?
00:01<JustRob>I have a stack of text files I need to be able to edit on either system and I don't want to have to mess around with converting every time I switch systems
00:02<Pryon>JustRob: Store the files using Windows' end-of-line. I don't know of any linux editors that can't handle it.
00:03-!-phrosty [] has quit [Quit: Sacrifice to live; Live to die; Give your last breath; To the seed of war; So say we all.]
00:03<Pryon>You might have to deal with some cosmetic problems, but you shouldn't have any problems reading them.
00:04<Pryon>On the other hand, the only windows editor I've seen with any difficulty in this regard is notepad. Wordpad seems just fine with unix-like EOL
00:04<Pryon>My *real* recommendation is to use emacs on both platforms.

00:06<JustRob>Well, I've got notepad++ on my windows machine at work, and it will take pretty much anything you give it without issue so I'm ok on that end
00:08<ml|>if you are not doing anything fancy, .txt should do
00:10<JustRob>My main project right now is to retype that huge stack of text files. They've been converted between both systems, and god knows how many different file formats, back to plain text, back to other formats over the years. I want new clean files that I can use for archival and editing.

14:26<test>I have a question regarding the dd util. I need to read n bytes from a disk, the number of bytes will vary depending upon several external factors and in almost all cases will not be total number of bytes of the disk. This is problematic as I'd like to set the block size to 1MB for efficiency, but in most cases the number of bytes I need to read is not an even multiple of 1MB. Any suggestions on how to read n bytes from a disk via dd in an efficient manner, tha

14:27<test>I'm hoping there is a dd alternative or option to dd I am unaware of that says read n total bytes using a block size of y
14:27<test>to my understanding the total number of bytes to read is specified by (bs * count)
14:27<Muzer>just wondering if you could read the last few KB in a separate command and then cat the two files together? I don't know much at all about dd, so there is probably a better way.
14:27<test>this means bs must be divisble by the number of bytes
14:28<astronut>test: how are you calling this?
14:28<test>hmmm, that might work. one other piece of info I forgot to mention is I'm piping the data into md5sum
14:28<test>from a shell script

14:28<astronut>how many bytes are we talking about?
14:28<test>From a high level I'm verifying if an image is present on a disk
14:28<test>2 GB or less
14:29<test>using dd to read n bytes then piping to md5sum. Then comparing known md5 vs calculated md5
14:29<astronut>so you want to md5sum some range of bytes on a device?
14:29-!-famelix [~famelix@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
14:29<test>diff images are diff sizes so the number of bytes will vary
14:30<astronut>you may want to consider just writing your own utility in C, but otherwise, i'd say just don't bother w/ bs
14:31<test>yes, I'm thinking that to. i was hoping dd might have some option I'm unaware of or some one may know of a util that handles this

21:19<b000ze>How do you downgrade packages from a recent upgrade ?
21:22<dpkg>methinks downgrade is not possible with apt-get currently. No future support is anticipated. Some programs change the binary format of their files in a way that cannot be rolled back later, and package maintainer scripts provide ways to upgrade to new config file formats but not ways to downgrade. You can always try to downgrade a package using dpkg -i <olderversion.deb>. See also <partial downgrade>, <unstable->testing>, <sdo>.

23:32<twb>!tell m3onh0x84 -about iceweasel
23:33<sney>ok, so say your OS is installed on /dev/sda1, you'd boot your rescue disk, mount /dev/sda1 under /mnt, then do chroot /mnt
23:33<spaceace>then dpkg should work?
23:33<sney>et voila, you are now inside your debian system, for the most part. there are some other steps to make it completely functional but they aren't necessary to install a kernel.
23:34<twb>sney: FYI, some live cds will explode horribly if you mount directly on /mnt (boo! hiss!). IIRC, Gentoo's at least.
23:34<JustRob>copy the data and reinstall?
