00:00<astomith>is not that we're not willing to help, is just that there are differences bethwen debian and mepis
00:00<ml|>and every other debian based distro
00:00<linuxguy>astomith, i dont think you understand, I am here asking if there is a work around with my card, smxi nor debian on freenode understand this quwation
00:00-!-geckos [~geckos@189.121.12.247] has quit [Quit: leaving]
00:02<ml|>you first need to be using debian tho
00:02<astomith>linuxguy, i do understand, but if you use mepis, ask on #mepis, they might help you. if you want to switch to debian that is something else.

00:04<linuxguy>astomith, what i am sking is this, yes i am using mepis now, what i am sking is if i install debian on this pc, can i get better support / workarounds to get my card working becaussse i suspect the other chanel are pointing me in the wrong direction to get the card working as properly as it should, ie wrong drivers
00:05*astomith lol
00:06<astomith>well, if you put it that way, which card do you have?

00:11<ml|>you may or may not get better support after installing debian, depends on your issues; where are here to help, but there are no guarantees ;)

00:13<psych787>linuxguy, I have an 8 series NVIDIA card. You DO know how to install the propietary drivers, right? They work nearly perfectly for me.

00:13<ml|>and it not be a driver issue it could be an X one
00:13<ml|>*may
00:13<psych787>I haven't had significant Xorg problems since Debain Sarge.
00:13<astomith>linuxguy, the only problem is not getting the correct resolution? what have you tried to fix that? what drivers you use now?
00:14<ml|>sometimes X fails at recognizing correct resolutions for some
00:14<psych787>Actually, he would do best to use pastbin to share his xorg.conf with us. Otherwise we would be troubleshooting in the dark, and that's not fun.
00:15<ml|>yeah, if he use debian
00:15<psych787>I can't imagine a distro without xorg.conf.
00:15-!-SiCuTDeUx [~sicutdeux@190.199.5.67] has quit [Quit: Saliendo]
00:15<psych787>Even Red Hat stuff uses xorg.conf.
00:15<astomith>well, maybe we make him to switch to debian, hehe
00:15<linuxguy>psych787, yes i know how to install the drivers, i know most ways even the smxi way (automated install) way but i need a 1280x1024 resoltion, i am not very familiar with xrandr, i ddid have debian workibf briliantly until ahd failure a
00:15<ml|>some are blank, but not what I meant
00:15<Cygnus>!seen bja
00:15<dpkg>bja <~bja@04ZAAATB2.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net> was last seen on IRC in channel #debian, 9h 16m 41s ago, saying: 'vinicius: dpkg-reconfigure package works some times'.
00:15<psych787>ahh, that should explain it
00:16<ml|>most if not all the time now xorg is blank be default
00:16<psych787>linuxguy, it soulds like xrandr is held back by a low resolution setting in xorg.conf.
00:17<psych787>so please run cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf and tell us what it says
00:18<ml|>but he not using debian, mepis is not supported here
00:18<psych787>But we can still help right?
00:18<jar>right
00:18<ml|>no
00:18<jar>no need to go out of your way to be an ass
00:18*psych787 is confused
00:19<jar>as you should be
00:19<ml|>jar: those are the rules and you know, not mine
00:19*astomith lol, great morning
00:19<jar>uh, ok
00:19<jar>anyways
00:19<psych787>!rules
00:19<dpkg>well, rules is 1) Don't ask to ask. Just state your problem, 2) Don't repeat until 15 mins after, 3) Read and re-read the docs first, then admit it if you REALLY don't understand. You're wasting your time and ours if you haven't at least tried. 4) If your problem ain't solved, come back in 12 hrs or 24 hrs later. We're very international. 5) Be polite and patient.
00:19<jar>time to try and help this guy
00:19<jar>:)
00:19<ml|>dpkg: debian based
00:19<dpkg>Your distribution may be based on Debian, but it is not Debian, and it probably falls short of Debian's standards (see <Debian policy>). Only Debian is supported on #debian. If your distribution has an IRC channel, you can use it instead. Even if your distribution has fewer people in its IRC channel, or doesn't have one, support for distributions other than Debian is off-topic on #debian.
00:20<psych787>Doesn't say anything about not helping people from other distros. FYI I often look to ubuntu forums for help as Debian is very similar.

00:33<absolutex3>->
00:33<psych787>edbian: I'm not sure how its calculated, but generally lower scores represent bad solutions. Bad as in leaving broken packages, unwinding your other installations, etc.
00:33<ml|>edbian: try /usr/share/doc/aptitude/ or the debian reference
00:34<linuxguy>Right ok, ok. I will try agian , if i instaall debian , and not a debian derative like mepis, just pure debian 5.03/4 would i get beter support to get the resolution i need from this channel and not the one on feenode?

00:34<edbian>psych787, Part of the AI I assume then?
00:34<edbian>ml|, I'm familiar with /usr/share/doc
00:34<astomith>linuxguy, in that case yes.
00:34<edbian>ml|, What is "the debian reference" ?
00:34<psych787>edbian: I assume it is merely used to present most favorable solutions first.
00:34<ml|>dpkg: reference
00:34<dpkg>The Debian Reference will answer most of your questions about Debian. Latest version (v2) is at http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ . Read it after installing Debian and before asking for support, as it is the closest thing Debian has to a manual. You can install this too, the package name is debian-reference: 'aptitude install debian-reference'
00:35<edbian>psych787, Yeah, that would be and A.I. agent at work
00:35<psych787>edbian: In any case you should *carefully* review *all* changes that aptitude suggests. If it's making a suggestion and prompting you to accept it, you're doing something dangerous.
00:35<kenyon>edbian: yes, it is part of aptitude's artifical intelligence subsystem
00:35<astomith>is there a way to see what is making update-initramfs freeze?
00:36<edbian>psych787, For better or worse I've been using aptitude for about a month now so I'm used to it asking me things.

08:48<dpkg>To verify you have a valid and official Debian CD/DVD image, see http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/#verify . To test an ISO image was burned correctly, compare the output of md5sum filename.iso; dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c `stat --format=%s filename.iso` | md5sum You should compare this md5sum to the checksum for the iso image on the mirror.

16:12<astomith>also, which plugin you want to use? java-gcj-compat-plugin (free) or sun-java6-plugin (from non-free)

16:13<dpkg>For the java plugin install either the icedtea-gcjwebplugin (free) plugin or the sun-java6-plugin (<non-free>). For other java programs (lenny onwards), you can install the default-jre package to get install a java runtime, or "apt-cache search java-virtual-machine" to see other implementations. 20:07<cesurasean>how do i fix this? someone, please! - [Fri Mar 05 19:02:48 2010] [error] [client 192.168.1.1] PHP Warning: date(): It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected 'America/Chicago' for 'CST/-6.
20:08<paultag>cesurasean, set your timezone :P
20:08<cesurasean>do i have to alter line 353?
20:08<cesurasean>how do i set my timezone?
20:08<cesurasean>lol
20:08<paultag>cesurasean, from that error, I'd guess adding the "date_default_timezone_set()" call
20:08<adb>!timezone
20:08<dpkg>from memory, timezone is the standard time (aka local time) in a particular region. To change the timezone on Debian systems, execute "dpkg-reconfigure tzdata" (Lenny, Squeeze) or "tzconfig" (Etch). Alternatively: "cp -b /usr/share/zoneinfo/$TZ /etc/localtime". Note that tzselect(1) does not change the timezone.
20:08<paultag>adb, that's for local, not PHP interp
20:09<cesurasean>ah! i was wondering if it was tzdata, too
20:09<adb>ok, sorry not all reading ..
20:09<cesurasean>maybe so
20:09<cesurasean>lemme check!
20:09<paultag>adb, it's OK :)
20:09-!-roxdragon [~roxdragon@host68-103-dynamic.246-95-r.retail.telecomitalia.it] has left #debian []
20:09<paultag>cesurasean, it's whining because it's relying on the system time, and has to trust you want your local TZ's time for server time ( not UTC )
20:10<paultag>cesurasean, and can cause timestamp issues, if your UNIX time is in your TZ, and not UTC ( Yay future files )
20:10<cesurasean>didnt work
20:10<cesurasean>so how do i fix this?
20:11<cesurasean>i put chicago time, etc, and it set the time,
20:11<cesurasean>but still same php errors...

20:14<paultag>cesurasean, nothing, add a line before it, such as the one I pasted
20:14<cesurasean>and leave the current one?
20:14<paultag>cesurasean, yes
20:15<paultag>cesurasean, that is not a problem with the code, it's a problem with your server, but you can work around it by telling PHP it's OK.
