00:40<GhostlyDeath>I have a disk /dev/hdg which is attached to an Ultra66 via 40 conductor cable, The disk works but DMA always times out
00:41<GhostlyDeath>I've ran out of 80 conductor cables, so is there any way to temporarily disable DMA for this disk?
00:41<GhostlyDeath>and yes, I do know how slow non-DMA mode is
00:42<sney>bios usually has a PIO setting
00:43<sney>though having DMA time out is still gonna be faster than PIO. your call.
00:48<GhostlyDeath>heh, well Linux disables DMA, but once it disables it, the disk is no longer readable
00:48<GhostlyDeath>every sector fails

00:55<liw>I am not having luck making a usb stick to install debian; syslog in the installer environment says iso-scan finds the ISO file from the stick, but thinks it is unusable -- any suggestions? the ISO image is not corrupt, I verified that

01:24<kamran>How to install .deb file in BackTrack4?
01:24<jm_>!backtrack
01:24<dpkg>BackTrack is a Linux distribution based on <Ubuntu> Intrepid (as of BackTrack 4), previously <SLAX>. Derived from merging two penetration-testing distributions: WHAX (formerly WHOPPIX) and Auditor Security Linux. It is not supported in #debian. http://www.backtrack-linux.org/ #backtrack-linux on irc.freenode.net. See also <based on debian>.
01:24<jm_>try asking in that channel instead
01:25<zhengyi>kamran: you really should be asking the backtrack ppl, but any .deb should be installable on Debian derived distros using `dpkg -i`
01:26<kamran>Simply tell me how to install deb. file (Google Chrome) ?
01:26<zhengyi>kamran: `man dpkg` && /join #backtrack-linux

08:38<padski>I'm looking at captures of avahi traffic, trying to understand a problem. cos ipv6 is hard to read I have restricted one host to ipv4, thinking the conversation would naturally move to ipv4. even after restarting the avahi-daemon on the ipv6 host, I am seeing a pattern where the ipv6 host replies in ipv6, which seems pretty silly. am I missing a trick ?

09:02<Teow>disks *
09:02<Teow>they both have files on them, and they shouldn't be lost
09:05<musca>they shouldn't be lost , so you have backups.

09:06<abrotman>Teow: you do understand that RAID0 is not really RAID, right?

09:06<padski>not redundant
09:06<Teow>I know that

09:07<abrotman>Teow: if a single disk dies in your 2-disk RAID0, all your data goes away

Easier to type and marginally more efficient.

19:53<TCW>andsens, "compiled in" is not the right saying... some configuration issue on your system may prevent you from using mysql stuff from within php
19:54<TCW>andsens, and before you ask, at least I am not very familiar with web foo (as in apache/php/mysql), so don't ask me :)
19:54<AzaToth>http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8995096&postcount=20 reduced the database lookup for me fron 25s to 3 ツ
19:55<TCW>andsens, and please don't message people in private. It is somewhat considered to be unpolite and at least I tend to see it as annoying like hell :)

20:19<andsens>TCW, you were right about the "compiled in" stuff
20:19<babilen>!ubuntu
20:19<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian, and it is unlikely to live up to Debian's standards (see <Debian policy>). Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu (irc.freenode.net) instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian>.
20:19<Guest1102>how to install nubuntu 6.10
20:19<noflash>Guest1102, you are off topic
20:19<babilen>Guest1102: Ubuntu is not supported in here (Nubuntu as well whatever that might be) - please hop over to freenode and /join #ubuntu
20:19<andsens>TCW, apparently compiled in means. An externally loaded module
