00:08<firefox>So I have openssh running on my box here, and I have a windows machine running putty... I want to do passwordless logon since my windows box is right next to me. I can login using username and password... but when I enable the ssh2 key the server closes the connection.
00:10<jay69>hello to all, I'm running testing amd64 installed from netinst.iso, I need to isntall linux-headers but when trying to, it gives me a message that it cannot do it because there is no package that matches my kernel, anyone know what to do?
00:11<firefox>I have the openssh compatible key pasted into ~/.ssh authorized_keys
00:11<firefox>I've checked my hosts.deny and allow, what else?
00:12-!-goodger [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:12<gsimmons>jay69: The command you are using and complete error output returned would assist ; /msg dpkg paste
00:13<jay69>gsimmons, ok one sec...
00:14<Scynix>Hm.. attempting to aptitude install postfix and I get a message about exim4 being broken and it wants to remove it. I wasn't aware it came with exim preinstalled on a custom install? Is it better than postfix?

00:27<gsimmons>judd: kernel --release squeeze
00:27<judd>Available kernel versions are: squeeze: 2.6.32-3-686 (2.6.32-9)
00:28<gsimmons>jay69: The -trunk kernels are obsolete and were removed from the archive. You'd want to be using 2.6.32-3-* as indicated above.
00:29<jay69>gsimmons, the problem is that if I do that, when I try to install Virtualbox (non-ose) it will tell me that I need to install linux-headers

03:02<dpkg>[pptp] Point to Point Tunneling Protocol, a very insecure and unreliable way to create tunnels; consider <openvpn>, <ipsec> or <l2tp> instead. A few unfortunate ISPs use PPTP to provide service on Ethernet connected broadband networks. If you have to connect to a PPTP server, you can try using pptpsetup (pptp-linux package), kvpnc or network-manager-pptp. See also <why not pptp>, <vpn>, <poptop>, <mppe>.

05:36<Lillymon>Alright, this has gone beyond an annoyance. With certain subtitles (VobSubs in particular) and subtitles on screenshots ENABLED, SMPlayer doesn't display subtitles on screenshots. This is getting to be a serious problem now.
05:37-!-nostmith [nostmith@] has joined #debian
05:38<Lillymon>This started a few months back, but I've got to get it fixed now, I need comparison shots, I need to show subtitles, and SMPlayer is the best application for this except that it won't display the subtitles on screenshots for no apparent reason. They display fine during playback, but there's nothing on the screenshots.
05:39<neria>and what if you do a screenshot with Gnome ?
05:40<Lillymon>Nothing because I use KDE. But if I use KSnapShot, they appear. But that's not really a solution.

05:42<themill>Lillymon: there are plenty of other mplayer frontends. Have you tried them? It sounds like the sort of thing you need to take up with either the smplayer or mplayer upstream developers
05:43<Lillymon>I want to use SMPlayer mostly due to the continuous screenshot function, which makes it easy to get shots on the exact frame I want.
05:44<neria>this can't be done directly with mplayer (and a script ?)
05:45<Lillymon>Possibly, if I were willing to mess around with MPlayer and a script, but SMPlayer does everything I want in one neat package. Moving onto another app when the current one breaks for no reason isn't really a solution, it's an ugly workaround.
05:47<themill>Lillymon: then you need to work with the smplayer developers on this (or possibly mplayer, if it's not a function they are providing but just something they're wrapping)
05:47-!-Meise [] has joined #debian
05:47<Lillymon>Well the SMPlayer channel seems pretty empty, so I might as well bug the MPlayer developers so I can find out.

05:52<chlin1>Lillymon: have you checked the format of subtitle?
05:53<chlin1>if you can't see the content of subtitle shown on e.g. mplayer, smplayer, etc.
05:53<chlin1>but you can read the content of subtitle.
05:53<chlin1>timestamp1 -> timestamp2
05:54<chlin1>possibly the format of subtitle is not format correctly
05:54<chlin1>otherwise you may read the incorrectly encoding.
05:54<Lillymon>Well that's possible, but why would it display on playback then?

05:55<chlin1>oh. so you can read subtitle shown on e.g mplayer?
05:57<chlin1>what i mean is that if when opening the content of subtitle, for instance, gedit /path/to/
05:57<chlin1>you can see the content there
05:57<chlin1>but when loading with mplayer
05:57<Lillymon>The subtitles are integrated within the container, I'd need to unmux the file first.
05:57<chlin1>there is nothing shown on the screen.

05:58<chlin1>possibly because the format of the subtitle is not correctly formatted. for instance, there is a newline between line number (1) and timestamp and dialogue.

15:33<Dreakon>dutchfish, I am a Debian Testing user essentially asking the best way to completely remove a package as purging it didn't seem to do the trick.
15:33<titan8990>Dreakon: the answer is "rm"

21:26<jay_>I installed it because I thought it would work faster than the i386 but some apps freeze and I don't see any speed improvement
21:28<soonyum_>you wont get any speed improvements with amd64, atleast for typical desktop use. 64-bit means that your processes have a bigger virtual memory, which makes a difference if you are running a server, scientific computation etc

22:25<gamerdonkey>is your whole system on one partition?
22:25<Dreakon>gamerdonkey, yeah.
22:26<gamerdonkey>well, you can use the du command to try to track down where a lot of space is being taken up
22:26-!-PovAddict [~nicolas@] has joined #debian
22:27<gamerdonkey>there may be some in tmp that you can clear up, but my only other advice would be to remove programs that you don't need
22:27<PovAddict>does the gdb package contain debugging symbols for the gdb binary itself?
22:27<PovAddict>I don't see a gdb-dbg
22:27<gamerdonkey>PovAddict, I dunno
22:28<Dreakon>gamerdonkey, I did the "du" command. Is that number "133038892" at the end the amount of space I have free?
22:28<PovAddict>I'm trying to debug an app but gdb itself is segfaulting :|
22:28<Dreakon>Because that would change things a bit.
22:28<unixabg>Dreakon, du -h --maxdepth=1 /home
22:28<PovAddict>Dreakon: no, du tells you how much space you're using
22:28<gamerdonkey>yeah, listen to unixabg, you need good options for du to be useful

22:30<PovAddict>I bet it's a 1024 vs 1000 thing

22:32<Dreakon>GNOME :)
22:33<unixabg>Dreakon, well you can use something like du -h --max-depth=1 / to see what in your entire filesystem is taking up what space.
