00:11<k-man>since resolving my apt issues yesterday and removing all references to lenny, i now have a fairly large upgrade list:
00:11<k-man>shall i just do the big upgrade or break it up somehow?
00:11<k-man>it also wants to remove a whole load of of things

00:13<Appl6>k-man: You might want to try aptitude safe-upgrade first.
00:13<Appl6>k-man: Right, I saw, that's why I think safe-upgrade would be a better choice.
00:14<Appl6>k-man: It should get the obvious upgrades out of the way so you can focus on the things that cause broken dependencies and such.

00:21<k-man>Appl6: ah, ok, thanks for the hints
00:21<Appl6>k-man: Sure.
00:21<k-man>in safe upgrade, what do open, close, defer and conflict mean?
00:22<Appl6>k-man: Uh, I'm not sure? Haha, can you pastebin it please?
00:23<k-man>Appl6: sure - once its finished calculating
00:24<k-man>aptitude safe-upgrade is still calculating
00:25<k-man>its still calculating
00:25<k-man>check it out

00:36<chitchat>Can somebody please help me download and install the dvb kernel driver for Lenny using module-assistant? When I try, I'm getting an error.
00:36<Appl6>k-man: It takes longer the more packages and dependencies you have.
00:37<Appl6>k-man: Usually people have just a few packages to install or update, but you're installing hundreds, and with a bunch of conflicts, too.

00:37<gsimmons>dpkg: tell chitchat -about dvb-driver
00:38<chitchat>gsimmons: Thank you, that makes sense now. So how do I get the dvb drivers? Should I download the sources manually, or can I still use m-a?
00:40<k-man>i had to kill the safe-upgrad
00:40<k-man>it was still going and was hogging all system resourceds
00:40<gsimmons>chitchat: The former, but why do you require use of the out-of-tree DVB drivers?
00:40-!-Kool_mani [~Kool_mani@] has joined #debian
00:41<chitchat>gsimmons: I just want to get a USB DVB dongle working.

00:44<Kenshin>hey, is anyone around?
00:44-!-EmleyMoor [] has quit [Quit: Reboot needed - back soon]
00:46<chitchat>gsimmons: perhaps I have it wrong - I thought the dvb drivers were missing from the mainline kernel. Perhaps it's a problem with udev for my specific card? It works great on the latest Fedora
00:46-!-dbvolio [~gffd@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:46<chitchat>gsimmons: The symptom is that it detects the usb device, but doesn't create /dev/dvb*
00:47<Kenshin>has anyone here successfully gotten any pc games to work in wine?
00:47<Kenshin>i can't get any to work
00:47<Kenshin>nor with cedega either
00:50<gsimmons>chitchat: Again, which specific device do you have? After connecting it, please provide the output returned for the dmesg command at a paste site (/msg dpkg paste), along with output of "lsusb" and "uname -r".

00:55<edbian>Where does update-rc.d but scripts if I choose defaults ??
00:56<Kenshin>well, guess i won't be runnin many games on here lol

00:57<edbian>Nevermind I found it. 2 3 4 and 5
00:57<Kenshin>like what have you gotten working?
00:57<chitchat>gsimmons: I was working on the assumption that I needed to download the driver. Obviously something else is the problem, so I'll spend a bit of time investigating and get back to you later if that's ok?
00:57<Kenshin>and, did you use wine?
00:57<LokiChaos>Kenshin: I have diablo2 (but not diablo), warcraft3, starsiege:tribes (1 and 2)
00:57<Kenshin>so far i've tried nfsu2, dmc3, dmc4 with no results
00:57<LokiChaos>Kenshin: yeah just wine
00:58<Kenshin>though they did install smoothly

01:05<gsimmons>chitchat: First determine if an in-tree DVB driver requires firmware from userspace (via dmesg). If your device uses the alarmingly common DiBcom dib0700 USB DVB bridge, ask dpkg about dibcom.

01:09<chitchat>gsimmons: Yes, it requires firmware. dmesg on the machine that it's connected to installs "dvb-usb-af9015.fw". That machine is remote which is why I can't plug the dongle into mine right now, but I definitely don't have that file.

01:19<larsie>okey. cool.
01:19<Scynix>yeah, both names... apt-get install bob cat
01:19<dr|z3d>Or use aptitude, much better.
01:19<Scynix>or .. what dr said
01:19<dr|z3d>!why aptitude
01:19<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution and will often find a solution where apt-get gives up. It can be used from the command line like apt-get plus an interactive resolver makes it much easier to recover from broken dependencies. It has advanced search capabilities (see <aptitude search>).

10:12<dbldtx>Metrahla; my opinion, if you use Debian in place of Ubuntu, you end up learning much more about Linux, the underlying system. Debian and Ubuntu use the same software packages (.deb files) and both use the ideas of Software Repositories and the way in which they install software, so they're very similar. In my experience, if you learn Debian, you know Ubuntu but not quite the other way around. It's like if you know Ubuntu, you are

12:05<jordanm>debacle: if you can get the pciid, you can look it up on kmuto or using our judd bot
12:05<themill>,pciid 1095:3132
12:05<judd>[1095:3132] is 'SiI 3132 Serial ATA Raid II Controller' from 'Silicon Image, Inc.' with kernel module 'sata_sil24' in lenny. See also
12:05<themill>So there's a kernel module that claims to be able to work it, but ymmv

19:45<themill>And1: yes you can use it in sudoers and yes it's a great way of starting and stopping daemons.
19:45<abrotman>deus: modprobe -r ?
19:45<dpkg>from memory, invoke-rc.d is a way of starting or stopping daemons such as a mail server, cron, etc. invoke-rc.d has advantages over running the init script directly in that it is easier to tab complete, it will play nicely with dependency-based init systems like <insserv> and <upstart>. It can also be controlled with a <policy-rc.d> script. invoke-rc.d *must* be used in maintainer scripts -- see policy s9.3.3.2.
19:46<And1>themill: How would I use it? 'Cmnd_Alias FOO = /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d $daemon' doesn't work.
