01:46<WAL7>is anybody there ?
01:46<dark>Guest1072, hmm, i installed it a couple of times, and it was pretty normal o.o just like any other installation. but you will need to make sure the filesystem is aligned with erase blocks, or else you will have poor performance
01:46<dark>WAL7, i didn't understood your question
01:47<dark>Guest1072, some people install the filesystem directly on the disk, without a partition
01:47<amitz>dark: fs alligned with erase blocks?
01:47<WAL7>sorry can you help me in backtrack i have a problem
01:47<dark>amitz, http://thunk.org/tytso/blog/2009/02/20/aligning-filesystems-to-an-ssds-erase-block-size/
01:48<dark>WAL7, what is your problem?
01:48<qq->!backtrack
01:48<dpkg>BackTrack is a Linux distribution based on <Ubuntu> Intrepid (as of BackTrack 4), previously <SLAX>. Derived from merging two penetration-testing distributions: WHAX (formerly WHOPPIX) and Auditor Security Linux. It is not supported in #debian. http://www.backtrack-linux.org/ #backtrack-linux on irc.freenode.net. See also <based on debian>.
01:48<dark>WAL7, for me, backtracking is.. ah.. ok..
01:48<dark>amitz, i asked if this is valid for usb pen drives, and people told it is
01:49<amitz>dark: interesting, thanks!
01:49-!-jeflui [~jeflui@201-43-166-196.dsl.telesp.net.br] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:49<amitz>!debootstrap
01:49<dpkg>debootstrap can create a basic Debian system from scratch, without apt/dpkg. Useful for installing in a <chroot>. It is key to installing Debian GNU/Linux from a Unix/Linux system, ask me about <install guide>. http://wiki.debian.org/Debootstrap http://www.debian-administration.org/article/Installing_new_Debian_systems_with_debootstrap
01:50<amitz>oh wait, doesn't realy apply to Guest1072...
01:50<WAL7>i try to do airodump-ng and i dont see any networking also my own and sometimes its work and they disapear i have a alfa usb wireless adapter ? do you know what is the problem ??
01:50<dark>yes, I install on my pen drive using debootstrap
01:51<dark>(also, I installed gentoo once, it seems similar. but I gave up with the size requeriments for compiling apps)
01:51-!-chitchat [~guest@218-214-24-203.people.net.au] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:52<dark>WAL7, it works that way: you, from your current system, do aptitude install debootstrap (works on ubuntu and debian) or download debootstrap; then create a partition; then mount it and does debootstrap on it; then do a chroot, and now you are on a debian system. from there, install kernel, grub, configure things etc. and do grub-install
01:52<dark>i think that link will explain everything in details
01:53<WAL7>ok thanx so much i will try it
01:53<dark>ah
01:53<dark>no sorry haha
01:53<dark>it was to Guest1072
01:53<dark>WAL7, forget about debootstrap, it's for installing ubuntu. as per backtrack, i have no knowledge in this distro
01:54<dark>WAL7, and I also have problems with networking seeming to float, this is happening because I have no control on this beast called NetworkManager
01:54<dark>it usually doesn't happen when i have to configure the network myself
01:55<dark>(it is connecting automatically on wifis i don't want it to connect, aargh)
01:55<dark>ops
01:55<dark>it's for installing.. debian
01:55<WAL7>ok but.. what is chroot ?
01:55<dark>it's for changing your / directory
01:56<dark>so that you can only see what is inside of, say, /some-other-dir
01:56<qq->!chroot
01:56<dpkg>a way to change the root directory of a process, see also http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch09.en.html#_chroot_system

01:56<WAL7>can you help me to fix that step by step or is too long ?
01:56<dark>amitz, (well, i think debootstrap is the best way for installing in a pen drive, Guest1072 may find it ok)
01:57-!-ao2 [~u@cl-35.trn-01.it.sixxs.net] has joined #debian
01:57<dark>WAL7, I probably can't. I could try, but I don't know where to begin. I don't know what's airodump-ng, and my own wireless adapter is wild here
01:57<amitz>dark: yes, but I don't know if Guest1072 will insist on using ubuntu installer -_-
01:58-!-fede [~fede@r190-135-70-62.dialup.adsl.anteldata.net.uy] has joined #debian
01:58<dark>i find optical media installation very inconvenient those days.. currently i use cds or dvds just for bootstrapping on bare metal. and this applies only to my desktop anyway (my netbook has no cd drive)
01:59<WAL7>ok thank you anyway really apreaciate
01:59<dark>WAL7, can't you find an irc channel specific to backtrack distro? or, a forum, or a mailing list
01:59<WAL7>im really new to this
01:59<dark>WAL7, forums and mailing lists are slower, but you usually get more in depth answers
02:00<dark>WAL7, do you know if backtrack has a website?
02:00<WAL7>yeaq
02:00<WAL7>yes
02:00<dark>WAL7, maybe there are some links on "support" there
02:00<WAL7>ok i will check this thanx
02:00<qq->dark, read above bot message about backtrack
02:01<dark>hmm, there are forums, http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forums/
02:01<dark>qq-, yes, I know it's off-topic. but, can't I just exchange some little words?
02:02<dark>qq-, WAL7 probably has noticed that this channel is specific to debian support (and not to derivatives)
02:02<qq-> offtopic: #debian-offtopic
02:02<WAL7>there is a channel of backtrack ?
02:02<qq->!backtrack
02:02<dpkg>BackTrack is a Linux distribution based on <Ubuntu> Intrepid (as of BackTrack 4), previously <SLAX>. Derived from merging two penetration-testing distributions: WHAX (formerly WHOPPIX) and Auditor Security Linux. It is not supported in #debian. http://www.backtrack-linux.org/ #backtrack-linux on irc.freenode.net. See also <based on debian>.
02:03<Guest1072>amitz, with ubuntu installer on usb flash memory . i can install/remove software
02:03<qq->!ubuntu
02:03<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian, and it is unlikely to live up to Debian's standards (see <Debian policy>). Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu (irc.freenode.net) instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian>.
02:04<dark>qq-, he is talking about using ubuntu installer to install debian, maybe. (well, he was talking about installing debian, earlier)
02:05<dark>I gave him the option I use for installing on usb: debootstrap (have you noticed, Guest1072?)

04:43<dpkg>methinks downgrade is not possible with apt-get currently. No future support is anticipated. Some programs change the binary format of their files in a way that cannot be rolled back later, and package maintainer scripts provide ways to upgrade to new config file formats but not ways to downgrade. You can always try to downgrade a package using dpkg -i <olderversion.deb>. See also <partial downgrade>, <unstable->testing>, <sdo>.

08:32<heras>hi. Im trying to install the non-free nvidia using the module assistant on a fresh squeeze. it fails because it cant find linux-headers-2.6.32-trunk-amd64 and neither can I. Does this package exist or should I use linux-headers-2.6.32-3-all-amd64 (or other)? If so, to what do I need to change "m-a auto install nvidia-kernel${VERSION}-source"?
08:32<abrotman>heras: aptitude install linux-image-amd64 .. then boot the -3- kernel, then remove the -trunk- kernel

13:46<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian, and it is unlikely to live up to Debian's standards (see <Debian policy>). Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu (irc.freenode.net) instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian>.

17:33<paultag>yeah tuxcrafter
17:34<paultag>tuxcrafter, it's not odd, this was done for a reason
17:34<paultag>tuxcrafter, the conf was changed from a monolitic httpd.conf to a fragmented directory style setup. It's easiest to understand this way:
17:34<paultag>tuxcrafter, cd /etc/apache2/
17:34<paultag>tuxcrafter, ls
17:35<paultag>tuxcrafter, note modules-enabled and modules-available
17:35<paultag>tuxcrafter, when you "install" a module, you similink it from available to enabled, and apache2 includes everything in modules-enabled
17:36<paultag>tuxcrafter, same with sites-enabled, you can have a ton of files in there. I have 4 on my web server. It makes moving stuff easy :)

21:13<mochan>I have a question about ssh. Recently I get the message 'write failed: broken pipe' after using ssh for a random amount of time (a few minutes) using the computer in my office from my laptop at home. Could this be some intermediary computer or my internet provider filtering ssh packages?
21:13-!-dserban__ [~dserban@S0106001346beb5f3.ok.shawcable.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
21:14<paultag>mochan, ssh has a timeout feature
21:14-!-dserban__ [~dserban@S0106001346beb5f3.ok.shawcable.net] has joined #debian
21:15<paultag>mochan, I think you can disable it serverside, or configure the client to send keepalive packets or something
21:15<paultag>mochan, it helps if you forget to logout or something
21:16<mochan>paultag, Yes, but I have made no change in the sshd server configuration and the time to failure varies a lot
21:16<paultag>mochan, it should break off the socket after about 30 minutes or so
21:16-!-dserban_ [~dserban@S0106001346beb5f3.ok.shawcable.net] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
21:17<paultag>mochan, if it's doing that before about 30 minutes, it could be a connection issue that breaks the socket
21:17<paultag>mochan, anywhere from the NIC, to the Router to the Modem to the server
21:17<paultag>mochan, ISPs would not bother to filter SSH traffic, it's so minute and the guys who do the filter rules use ssh too :)

21:18<mochan>paultag, This morning the failures took about 1 minute. My other question is, if some intermediary is responsible, is there a tool to find out who is the culprit.
21:19<paultag>mochan, not really. I would look to your network card ( esp if you are wireless ). Try running a lot of basic traffic internally to the network and see if you loose packets or have network failure
21:19<paultag>otherwise it's outside your network
21:20<mochan>paultag, This morning I phoned my internet provider and they told me that port 22 is 'closed' for security reasons. I'm using another port since several months ago, but port 22 used to work fine also.

21:20<paultag>mochan, who is your ISP?
21:20<paultag>doh
21:20<paultag>/whois
21:21<mochan>paultag, OK. I'll try testing my card. I recently changed the driver since there was some change in the debian packages.
21:21<paultag>mochan, aye. That sucks :(
21:21<mochan>paultag, My ISP is cablemas from Cuernavaca, in Mexico
21:21<paultag>Cablevision :)
21:21<paultag>yup
21:21<paultag>Cablevision SA de CV
21:22<paultag>nothing I could find indicates they are filtering, but it's not out of the question mochan
21:22<mochan>paultag, Not Cablevision, but a similar company. Cablevision doesn't operate in Cuernavaca
21:22<paultag>mochan, your IP is owned by Cablevision SA de CV
21:23<mochan>paultag, Currently I not at my home. At this moment I am using Cablevision. So, how did you find out they are not filtering?

21:28<mochan>paultag, I googled cablemas and ssh but didn't find my complain. Maybe the problem lies after the packages leave their control. Traceroute shows there are usually 15 to 25 hops from my home to my office (3 miles away).
