09:58<gamambel>the tutorials say grub-install WON'T work for raid, but installing it manually will
09:58<gamambel>that's why i'm trying the device(hd0,0)/root(hd0,0)/setup stuff

17:13<cmyers_>I am having trouble getting ctrl+alt+backspace to kill my X. Googling has reported that this feature was intentionally, blasphemously, broken. All attempts to fix it have failed. Adding "DontZap" to xorg.conf failed. Changing xmodmap for key 22 has failed. Can anyone advise how to get this working? Does anyone have it working on debian squeeze?
17:15<themill>!dontzap
17:15<dpkg>To disable termination of your X server via Ctrl+Alt+Backspace in Lenny, place Option "DontZap" "on" within the ServerFlags section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, see xorg.conf(5). 20:58<RJ>I have an nvidia card, though, and have frequent enough crashes when bliting.
20:59<nicholas>strange. are they using nouveau perhaps?
20:59<nicholas>i still use the proprietary driver, manually installed on top of my debian system. works great for me.
20:59<RJ>i've heard that term referenced in the newest version, though I don't know what it is. I'm still quite a beginner.
21:00<nicholas>it's a new driver for nvidia cards, written outside of nvidia
21:00<RJ>I haven't really done much with computers for quite a few years now. everything i knew is pretty much out of date (and was more windows oriented anyway)
21:01<RJ>i'm not that great with manual installs. the terminal is not very intuitive to me.

21:04<nicholas>fair enough. i don't think i'm capable of answering the question of how good a match debian is for you. i've had debian since '99 and linux since '94. the values i see in debian are focussed in a completely different place (i like the extensive policy manual and documentation)
21:04<RJ>care to elaborate?
21:06<nicholas>the debian policy manual describes how debian packages are to be prepared, http://www.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals#policy
21:07<nicholas>unlike the packaging manual which is just 'how to build a package' it covers a lot of the design of debian as a system, broken down into requirements on the individual packages.
21:07<nicholas>there's also lots of user documentation: http://www.debian.org/doc/user-manuals , if you're the sort who really likes to read.
21:08<nicholas>debian installation guide and debian reference are excellent
21:08<RJ>yeah, this is a bit over my head. i barely understand (assuming i do) what packages really are, nevermind their requirements (unless you mean system requirements).

21:09<RJ>so, yeah, a bit over my head.
21:09<gamambel>RJ: linux and especially debian are very time consuming
21:09<nicholas>indeed, i wouldn't worry about that.
21:09<gamambel>you have to know that pretty much nothing works out of the box
21:09<nicholas>gamambel: what?
21:09<gamambel>it's great to get to know you're computer, but if you want something that "just works" you might want to stay with win/mac

21:11<Xenguy>sure enough
21:12<RJ>well, i wouldn't mind learning how to get things to work, but i have no clue where to start. with ubuntu problems were usually solved by going to the forums, explaining my problem, and they'd tell me what to type in the terminal. I don't feel like I was really learning anything, though.
21:12<RJ>that's partly why i want to switch. I'd like to do some dev work of my own, but how can i expect to do so if i can't even understand my OS?
