00:53<Piki>hi, KDE user here. when trying to play an Ogg Vorbis or MP3 in a xine-based player like Amarok, the file stutters (kind of like a scratched CD or broken record), but when using mplayer, the file plays normally -- at least until the very end of the file, where it stutters. any help much appreciated

01:13<Guest953>I appear to be in 'dll hell' here ... help, please. 'g++: Depends: g++-4.4 (>= 4.4.3-1) but it is not going to be installed'
01:13<Guest953>from: apt-get install build-essential g++
01:14<jm_>apt-cache policy 'g++-4.4'
01:16<Guest953>jm_: Thanks. Working on pastebin here.
01:16<Piki>since we have a few new faces here, i'll re-explain the problem i'm having: i'm a KDE user on lenny 5.0.4 updated as of a few minutes ago. xine-based players like amarok stutter like a scratched CD on audio files (ogg vorbis/mp3) while mplayer plays fine but stutters on the end of the file
01:17<dbvolio>i have a problem
01:17-!-luizxx [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
01:18<dbvolio>who is familiar with centova??
01:18<Guest953>jm_: Hold the thought. Updates are now present that weren't available when last I looked. Perhaps something's changed. I'll 'write' again when I've investigated a bit more.

01:18<dbvolio>knows how centova works?
01:19<dbvolio>because i want to use it and it just won't install

01:27<dbvolio>for installing centova i followed the pdf manual the centova has
01:27<Guest953>build-essential g++ circle (4.4 <-> 4.3?) still present. Help, please.
01:27<dbvolio>i have installed all the dependecyes including ioncube loader which is working
01:27<dbvolio>when i should type ./
01:28<dbvolio>it says that ioncube must be installed
01:28<dbvolio>that is the error
01:29-!-hinge_cut [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:30<Piki>Guest953: i think build-essential might need to be updated for the new g++. it's looking for 4.4.3, but only 4.4.4 is available.
01:32<Piki>dbvolio: it seems that centova is looking for ioncude in a different place than it is installed. i've never done scripting with .sh files before, but you might be able to edit it to look for ioncube where it's actually installed
01:32-!-luizxx [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
01:33<Piki>but i'd recommend waiting for a more experienced user help you before trying to do the editing
01:33-!-ts-rb [] has joined #debian
01:34<Guest953>Piki: ok, but if I just try to get g++ alone, same problem. Getting closer though (in the sense of finding the real culprit.) But I'm still lost.
01:34<jm_>Guest953: what happens if you use aptitude instead of apt-get? I also forgot to ask about apt-cache policy output for g++
01:36-!-cahoot [~radix@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:36<jm_>Guest953: you have a mix of testing and unstable, why?
01:36<Guest953>jm_: apt-cache policy at top of last pastebin. aptitude worse, and what started me down this road: aptitude search aptitude returns: aptitude: symbol lookup error: aptitude: undefined symbol: sqlite3_db_mutex. Why the heck sqlite is involved at all with aptitude is just beyond me.
01:37<dbvolio>not the editing of ioncube
01:37<jm_>Guest953: ahh you're the sqlite3 feller from last week?
01:37<dbvolio>ioncube is a php loader
01:37<dbvolio>it's a decryptor
01:37<Guest953>jm_: Hey!
01:37<dbvolio>centova installes shoutcast and then the rest of the script
01:37<Guest953>jm_: Three steps forward, 14 1/2 back.
01:38<dbvolio>that's why i need ./
01:38<Guest953>jm_: Nice to know I'm recognizable! Hey, it's that stupid 'sqlite3 feller' again! :-)
01:38-!-My-Computer [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:39<dbvolio>i do not have wht to edit because it's all encrypted and ioncube decrypts it

01:40<Piki>hmm? reducing the channel limit?
01:40<Guest953>Have to use this guest nick as it's not taking my normal _BS_ nick. Or rather, it took it, boofed me off, tried to reconnect, it seemed to think I was still here, and around in circles I go. Hey, irc circles, apt-get circles, it's all the same circle of life!
01:40<jm_>Guest953: ok, you have a mix of testing/unstable packages and it's trying to install a package from sid, but the other one has a strict dependency on the version in testing
01:42<Guest953>jm_: OK. If you remember, this is a downloaded vm. I don't actually have any interest in sid. So, if you're able to guide me through uninstalling those packages from sid, (and I'll reinstall non-sid), I'd sure appreciate it. My problem is not being familiar enough with all the apt-<x> stuff to work my way through it.
01:42<Piki>anyways, it's nearly 2AM here, and my eyes are fogging up. i'll be back in a few hours when perhaps more people in my time zone might be awake to ask for help :-)
01:43<jm_>Guest953: I recommend you grab the packages from testing, that is, make sure sources.list points to testing, then do aptitude download foo and install foo with dpkg
01:43-!-Piki [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:44<Guest953>jm_: I did however, take your advice, in sources.list, commented out sid, got stable happy, added testing, got the two happy, commented out stable, got testing happy. Or so I thought. Was down to these last two packages (I thought), and got stuck. [Your next message just came in - I'll look at it now.]

How can I follow your instructions / step by step, please.

02:06<Guest953>jm_: OK, proceeding. Yes, foo = packages. rmadison hadn't heard of. Install devscripts was the missing bit. Thanks. Processing ...

02:13<ansgar>The log file does mention the [E=...] flag nowhere. Any ideas what might be the problem?
02:15<Guest953>jm_: OK, see what you mean about rmadison now. My eyes are blurring over, over the version numbers, so I'll pursue this further tomorrow. In the mean time ... help me make sure I've got my head straight over this. apt-cache show <foo> shows me what's currently installed. And it and/or apt-get will show me what it wants / won't install, and usually a dependency as to why. Then, for each such...
02:15<Guest953>...package, rmadison shows me the current versions. For each such package where unstable >= current version, apt-get remove <foo> #remove unstable version; apt-get install <foo> #install testing version. Am I following this correctly? [But, if so, if no g++ installed, why would g++ not install now - ah, because of a dependency.]
02:16<Guest953>jm_: 'current version' above means 'current version on local machine'.
02:17<jm_>Guest953: no, apt-cache show shows what's available (also installed)

02:22<Guest953>jm_: Ah, OK, dropped the dpkg point earlier (dpkg install <foo>). So I'm looking for an unmet dependency requiring a higher version than apt-cache show shows as being available. Hold on - that doesn't make sense, the dependency is unmet - there is nothing to uninstall. o_O

02:25<jm_>Guest953: yup, that's the problem
02:26-!-brundle [] has joined #debian
02:27<Guest953>jm_: OK, thanks. Think I got it. And, I suspect, like you said earler, it will make more sense working through it. Am tempted to reenable unstable long enough to get g++ and build-essential in, however, I expect I'm merely postponing the problem if I do so. It will bite me in some other way, one way or the other, later.

02:29-!-linac [~lin@] has joined #debian
02:29<Guest953>jm_: Hmmm, but build-essential brings in kernel headers / images / etc. It will always be a moving target. i.e. Presumably one or more updates will occur before the current unstable kernel will drop down into testing.
02:30<Guest953>jm_: Actually, that's also saying the problem is ultimately self-correcting, as versions drop into testing. It's just need to build vmtools in the meantime.
02:30<jm_>Guest953: yes, that's why you should change sources.list back to testing so you don't continue installing new versions from sid, and apt will keep current packages as their versions will be >= those in testing

05:53<digifor>Is the advice here sound for downgradeing to squeeze?
05:53<digifor>g_ ask. No need to ask to ask.
05:54<g_>I'm trying to update my lenny kernel to the one in lenny-backports.

Only newer package in Fedora 13 that I could think of being of use was xorg xserver 1.8. I tried to install xserver-xorg-core from experimental but apt-get complains about dependencies. 17:09<felixs>another approach would be, tell udev to name the device with given uuid always the same

22:32<heffay>is it possible to run different distributions in different chroots side by side?
22:32<heffay>ive done this with 64/32bit but not with say, stable and testing
22:32<abrotman>why not?
22:33<heffay>why haven't i tried it?

22:34<cmyers_>heffay: Yes, it is possible, but distros with very different kernels or of very different ages sometimes present problems
22:34<blarson>heffay: as long as they work on the same kernel
22:34<abrotman>you didn't have enough free time?
22:35<cmyers_>For example, running debian lenny in a chroot under RHEL3 made me very sad.
22:35<abrotman>but RHEL3 made you happy? :)
22:36<cmyers_>no, it made me most sad of all =(

22:36<heffay>I was thinking the kernel might be an issue. Basically i should make sure that if the libraries in one chroot are newer, that they are compatible with my current kernel?
22:37<cmyers_>there are probably folks here far more authoritative than me, but my experience is if the kernel and glibc are the same major version, it is likely to at least "mostly" work
22:38<cmyers_>I had some errors crop up a lot due to the crazy xen module built into my host kernel (by my employer) for example, but had it not been for that lenny would have happily run on a 2.4.30-ish kernel.
