00:01<dotCOMmie>bja: are those that are use on the installer though? I mean I don't care much what is installed I just want to know if installer can write to disk
00:01-!-Erica [~Erica@24-178-185-189.dhcp.leds.al.charter.com] has left #debian []
00:02<bja>dotCOMmie: AFAIK the kernel of the release is the one on the installer. But since i do not package the installers nor anything else i might be wrong
00:03<bja>What do you want to write to the disk?
00:03<dotCOMmie>Debian d:. Disk driver does not cover chipset in stable
00:03<dotCOMmie>I'll just do testing one and see. (tomorrow)
00:05<bja>!tell dotCOMmie about kmuto
00:05<bja>dotCOMmie: just in case you want to install lenny

00:06<chealer>dotCOMmie: it probably depends on which testing installer you use
00:07<dotCOMmie>I usually bring stable to testing anyway I've just seen some quirks last time I used testing installer

00:08<chealer>dotCOMmie: as in the installer version, like squeeze d-i alpha 1
00:09<bja>dotCOMmie: Well it is not "official" but it does work. And eventually you get to upgrade to testing when it becomes stable :-)
00:09<dotCOMmie>chealer: hmm I didn't realize there were multiple versions are they avaliable from the same page?
00:10<chealer>dotCOMmie: yes ( http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ )

02:53<Dreakon>Hey guys, I'm running Debian Testing and when I open certain MP4 video files in VLC, it makes Debian crash to the login. Is there some kind of log somewhere I can look at to see why that happened?
02:54<jm_>Dreakon: check ~/.xsession-errors
02:56<Dreakon>Alright, it's got some stuff in it, but I don't notice anything relating to VLC...

I have a strange bug that appears when my router cannot connect to internet (happens if I exceeded my traffic limit) -- everything goes painfully slow. konsole takes like one minute to load, some windows may not even appear after loading, I get weird error messages all over the place. I think it has something to do with dhcp , or maybe the update utility ?

05:54<Zero_Dogg>themill: cmus - it's a release from 2007, but it's back in development and has had several new releases since March 2010
05:55<jm_>first thing to do would be to see if someone already requested it
05:55<Zero_Dogg>sid has 2.2.0, latest is 2.3.3

05:55<jm_>Zero_Dogg: yes, people using sid should know this btw
05:56<Zero_Dogg>jm_: Well, I've never had to request version updates before, hence why I asked, in case one didn't want these kinds of requests on the bugtracker.
05:56<Zero_Dogg>if it's documented somewhere, then I've missed it

05:59<themill>Zero_Dogg: the fact that upstream seem to have moved and no longer using their previous website for their tarballs means that none of the tools in debian can automatically detect that the package is out of date too.
05:59<lbt>but now I'm stuck on the fact that "udevadm settle" is taking multiple minutes to detect hardware...

17:26<Walex>ant_: that's a breathtaking way to do it.
17:27<Walex>ant_: and not in a good way...
17:27<ant_>Walex, got a better one? Was hoping to avoid a recursive function
17:27<retrospectacus>ant_: basename will do it
17:27<Walex>ant_: 'man rsync'
17:27<ant_>Walex, actually cp is an example, I actually want to call convert to resize images
17:28<ant_>maybe should have lead with that though
17:28<ant_>I want the same dir tree form input, but in a different output folder
17:28<ant_>I suppose I could copy the dir first and then resize the files in place...
17:28<Walex>ant_: let's say that '-exec' is 'find' is almost always wrong and one should use 'xargs', or a 'while read ...; do ...; done'
17:29<ant_>Walex, dont think I can do "xargs convert <filename> -size xx smallfiles/<filename>" ??
17:31<Walex>ant_: actually you can with gthe '-I' option, but in this case I'd use 'while read ...; do ....; done'

17:33<ant_>otherwise I would have done for i in *.jpg...

17:34<edbian>If I'm using sudo should I disable the root password?
17:34<Walex>edbian: not necessarily.
17:34<ant_>retrospectacus, that near where I started, but find with have each file with ./ which will cause smallfiles/./somedir/file.jpg
17:35<retrospectacus>that is ok actually..
17:35<edbian>Walex, I do see that it might be sort of pointless to have both systems in place. It would make my system more secure if I didn't have a root password because that would be one less way people could break into my machine .

20:17<s3a>or will the "rise" of info not be the end of man?
20:17<gpm>oh geez, ok so i have 32-bit flash now, but no sound. i suspect this is because i need to get pulseaudio to play nice with the 32-bit flash plugin. how do i do this (or if i'm wrong, what should i do)?

20:22<gpm>for instance i don't see a 32-bit libpulse when i try aptitude search libpulse
20:22<gpm>and since sound doesn't work i'm assuming it's not in the mac-daddy ia32-libs=
20:23<ansgar>s3a: Not really. Some projects use info, most use man.
20:23<gpm>man do i hate adobe right now
20:24<gpm>every debian package has a manpage, i think it's a requirement.
20:24<bremner>it is strongly encouraged is probably closer to the truth. And it is binaries in /usr/bin
