02:19<Escher>i'm sure this is a basic question, but i'm having some trouble getting debian installed; i get the message "no bootable partition in table" when trying to boot off of a usb drive that i formatted and copied the debian usb-hdd image to using dd under windows
02:19<Escher>(the image i used is the following:, and yes, i have an amd64 processor)
02:20<Escher>(if this isn't a support channel, please let me know and i'll take my confusion elsewhere :3 )
02:20-!-not-twb [] has joined #debian
02:21<not-twb>Suppose I have an old OS with new disks. smartctl -d ata /dev/sda reports that the device isn't in its list of devices.
02:21<not-twb>Is there a way to update its list of devices without installing a new version (similar to update-pciids for lspci)?
02:21-!-Abhishek_SIngh [~Abhishek@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
02:22*PovAddict didn't know of update-pciids
02:23<PovAddict>not-twb: I don't think there is a "list of devices" that can be upgraded separately
02:23-!-Amorphous [] has joined #debian
02:23<PovAddict>a new device may require new *code* to handle it
02:24<PovAddict>not-twb: confirmed; I ran "apt-file show smartmontools" and I don't see anything that could be a data file used by smartctl
02:25<PovAddict>so the "list of devices" is compiled into the binary

02:33<dr|z3d>Escher: This is it.
02:33<k-man>what's that web interface to cups called?
02:33<dr|z3d>Escher: Try Linux Usb Creator or Unetbootin.
02:34<jmarsden>Escher: This is a support channel, but many North Americans are currently sleeping... so it's not all that active...
02:34<Escher>ah, thank you, i'll try both of those :)

02:36<Escher>i imagine it won't make too much of a difference if i'm just installing it off the usb drive once, though, right?

02:40<amitz>rackspace is 39th best place to work in 2010 according to </troll> :-D

02:42<flaccid>what does for e.g. 0.98 actually represent?
02:42<Escher>although i feel kind of foolish asking these sorts of questions, having a degree in CS and using linux throughout my education + having installed distros before :\

02:44<flaccid>as mentioned before Escher - dr|z3d: Escher: Try Linux Usb Creator or Unetbootin.
02:45<not-twb>jmarsden: pfft, as if we care about .us
02:45<Escher>flaccid: right, i initially tried to use dd under windows to copy an image (namely, debian-live-504-amd64-standard.img) to the usb drive
02:45<flaccid>don't. use usb creator or unetbootin
02:45<Escher>right, trying that now :)
02:45<not-twb>unetbootin is ideal for people who don't know what they're doing

02:46<Escher>linux usb creator seems to be up the same alley judging from the flowery UI
02:46<not-twb>I normally grab the kernel/ramdisk or the disk image from the netboot/ directory of the archive, and forego the large .iso entirely.
02:47<Escher>one question; this is the canonical usb disk image, right?:
02:47<flaccid>but then again, you have a degree in computer science..
02:47<Escher>(er, and yes, i'm using a machine with an amd64 processor)

03:09<Escher>the problem, albeit a silly one, is that i don't have any burnable CDs around :\ if i did i wouldn't be going through this usb-related hell
03:10<not-twb>OK, no worries.

03:11<not-twb>Escher: which release and arch do you want?
03:12<Escher>i think i'd prefer squeeze for amd64, but i'd go with lenny for it if it makes things easier

03:14<not-twb>That file can be gunzipped and written directly to a bootable disk (USB or HDD) and booted.
03:14<Escher>excellent, thank you :) any suggestions on how i should write this bootloader to the usb drive? i have zero experience with making a usb drive bootable by the way :(
03:15<not-twb>From windows, you'll need something like rawrite.exe
03:15<dpkg> will install Debian side-by-side with an existing win32/64 system (see site for ongoing compatibility). It can be non-destructive if you follow directions, or if you want, just replace that evil non-free OS all together. Supaplex is the webmaster (for site issues), see site for all FAQ. on
03:15<not-twb> another option; I haven't tried it myself.
03:16<Escher>we'll see if this works and then i'll try that as a last resort :)
03:16<Escher>is it ok to use dd since i've already downloaded that, or is rawrite better?
03:16<not-twb>Sure, if you have dd, use that
03:18<Escher>wow, that download was ludicrously fast...i was getting like 70kb/sec or so from the http servers

03:19-!-ant_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:20<not-twb>Escher: because you're only downloading what you need; the image is only 10MB or so
03:21<not-twb>Everything else comes down from the network, which is why it's important that the target machine has a simple wired, DHCP network.
03:21<Escher>ah, i wasn't watching...i guess the extracted image must be 200mb of 0's or something?
03:21<not-twb>Hm, if it is, that sucks.
03:22<Escher>ah, i mean mostly :3 which would it explain why it compresses down so well...sorry, not too coherent at the moment
03:22<Escher>anyway, the drive is happily blinking away; my fingers remain crossed
03:22<not-twb>AFAIK that's a bug, and it should've been fixed by now.
03:23<Escher>i don't know if it's untoward to thank you again and again for guiding me through this

10:56<EmleyMoor>Is there any such thing as a decent non-evil graphics card?
10:56<BonZo>no, RichiH
10:56<RichiH>cthuluh: that, too
10:56<EmleyMoor>I chose nvidia deliberately as the lesser evil
10:57<BonZo>rvdnberg, and which card you would buy?
10:57<RichiH>BonZo: because i always ended up with crap settings, but with loads of bling in the config application
10:57<rvdnberg>in testing it's very easy nowadays using nvidia-kernel-dkms
10:57<cthuluh>well, if you need 3D graphics, intel chipsets are not really powerful. but for most users they are enough
10:57<rvdnberg>BonZo: i guess a intel or ati wich is supported out of the box in squeeze
10:58<rvdnberg>BonZo: doesn't matter for me, just need to screens with some acceleration, nothing special gaming etc
10:58<EmleyMoor>ATI always struck me as more evil - for several reasons

11:02*EmleyMoor will believe it when he sees it
11:02<rvdnberg>works well for single screen though

14:30<Bebblebrox>Here's it. According to manpages, SySV IPC calls like "msgrcv()" and "msgsnd()" are never restarted after catching a signal. However, this does not seem to happen with 2.10.2-6 libc6.
14:31<jordanm>dapeamel: you need to properly configure sudo to do what you want. I personally advise against allowing the user to do "sudo bash"
14:32<jordanm>dapeamel: there is sudo -i (which makes it look like you actually read the manpage) that provides interactive escalation, although, I advise against that as well

14:38<SmGr>Hello, could it be, that the debian-504-amd64-CD-1.iso is broken? We tried it with Brasero and some KDE program (I cannot provide any further information about the latter, I am afraid) and in both cases it stopped after a few seconds leaving a useless disc. 17:34<dpkg>sid is the <unstable> version of Debian. Sid is the destructive kid in Toy Story. It is NOT an acronym, but is sometimes backronymed Still In Development anyway. Do not use sid unless you have the skill to find your way out of the mess that broken packages may put you in; sid is not supported in #debian because sid users should be able to solve their own problems. Sid will never be released. See also <sid faq> <unstable>.

20:31<Hero_>I'm looking to install GTK so I can start learning how to make window apps in c++ for linux and windows. Does it come with debian? Aptitude search gtk returns a huge list and I'm not sure which package to grab.

20:32<tarka>Hero_: Do you want to use the C bindings or the C++ ones?
20:33<jpinx-eeepc>tarka: did you recently install sudo? or reconfigure it?
20:33-!-chomwitt_ [] has joined #debian
20:34<tarka>jpinx-eeepc: No. But there was a security update recently. Normally an update wouldn't cause this though.
20:34<Hero_>I did read a little bout GTK-- but I also read it is possible to use regular GTK with C++
20:35<jpinx-eeepc>tarka: dunno if security updates might trigger it again - I don't use sudo
20:36<jpinx-eeepc>I used to, but I got better ;)
20:36<tarka>Hero_: Yep, you can use the C bindings in C++. For that libgtk2.0-dev should give you what you need.
20:36<Hero_>k thanks
20:37<tarka>For the C++ classes you need libgtkmm-2.4-dev
20:37<Hero_>im assuming is came with debian
20:37<Hero_>nothing installed
20:38<tarka>Hero_: However, you may want to consider using Python + GTK. A lot of full-featured apps are written like that.
20:38<tarka>jpinx-eeepc: OK, thanks
20:39<Hero_>I just started learning python I will take a look at that!
20:39<Hero_>any tutorials you know off hand?
20:39<Hero_>I'm sure i can find smoe just wondering if you recommend any

20:40<Hero_>is there another package to fetch for python gtk?
20:41<tarka>There's some on the pygtk site, for more advanced examples look at the source for some of the python gtk apps. Gajim, Exaile, etc.
20:42<Hero_>which package python-gtk2 or python-gtk2-dev

20:47<tarka>python-gtk will work for most apps. The dev package is for lower-level stuff.
20:47<Hero_>ok i installed python-gtk2-tutorial but i can't locate it on my machine
20:47<Hero_>where would it have downloaded to?
20:47<tarka>Use 'dpkg -L python-gtk2-tutorial'. That will list the contents
20:48<Hero_>thanks again!

22:14<qq->jhutchins_lt, no , what's unclear in " After that (zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdX) , mount the USB memory stick (mount /dev/sdX /mnt), which will now have a FAT filesystem on it, and copy a Debian netinst or businesscard ISO image to it. Unmount the stick (umount /mnt) and you are done." ?
22:14<gaedol>jhutchins_lt it's not unclear, it simply doesn't cover all the possibilites :)
22:15<gaedol>in this moment i am trying to create an USB stick to install debian from, from windows
22:15<jhutchins_lt>qq-: There does seem to be some question of finding the correct iso to copy to it.
22:15<gaedol>if i dd (or something else) boot.img in the stick then i won't have enough space to put the 1 iso of debian in...
22:15<jhutchins_lt>qq-: It's not clear to me which to download, I'd think the netinst would be ideal.
22:16<jhutchins_lt>qq-: Also, there needs to be a clearer "if windows" branch.
22:16<gaedol>i can't netinst right now, since my connection is slow: i have the 1st cd of debian testing on disk, i'd like to use that
22:16<jhutchins_lt>gaedol: If your CD burning software has the ability to copy a disk to an iso, use that.
22:16<jhutchins_lt>gaedol: If it will fit on your USB.
22:17<jhutchins_lt>gaedol: This is simple in linux.

22:18<qq->jhutchins_lt, yes, "if windows" is missing .
