08:15<AndyJ>:(
08:15<heffay>i dont think you can run anything without an operating system
08:16<heffay>thats kinda the point right?
08:16<AndyJ>Looking at a piece of government supplied software that only runs on windows... (which I don't have any version of)... their website says, some people have run this successfully under wine...
08:16<themill>heffay: I think AndyJ is contrasting the need for a windows licence to run in a VM vs wine.
08:17<heffay>good point
08:17<themill>AndyJ: wine works just fine under debian. cxoffice probably works a little better if you're happy to pay for a version of wine with a pile of workarounds added to get random crap to work better.

08:20*AndyJ is lazy... and the system has worked perfectly for all this time...

08:22<AndyJ>OK. I can see wine in the repository for the eeePC (lenny) and that's my toy computer, I'll have a go at installing it there...
08:23<themill>felixs: that doesn't mean you encourage people to run etch though... that's all I'm saying.
08:23<AndyJ>No worries felixs it doesn't matter that much if I can't get this particular piece of govware to run.
08:23<felixs>(ok maybe i didnt try very hard)
08:23<AndyJ>I've been a tad reticent to upgrade, as this AMD64 box took a lot of setting up originally... on leave soon, so should have time to upgrade.

21:04<smv>not sure. it's eth0 has a local IP, like 192.168.*.* assigned by the router
21:05<dondelelcaro>smv: then you need to arrange for the router to forward the connection, because it's doing NAT or similar
21:06<smv>but if using a normal system, not a live one it worked...

23:49<dondelelcaro>twb: what are you planning on doing with the lock?
23:50<twb>I have two immediate use cases: one is a nightly cron job that runs an rsync-based backup script. It shouldn't overlap if rsync takes more than 24 hours to run.
23:51<twb>The other case is a cron job that pops up a window in my screen session every fifteen minutes to ask what I'm doing. It shouldn't pop up another one if I still haven't answered the first question.
23:51<dondelelcaro>twb: do you want it to start again after the previous has finished? or just fail?
23:51<twb>It should abort if the previous run is incomplete (i.e. if there's a lock still there).
23:52<twb>I'm also reading #bash's article: http://wiki.bash-hackers.org/howto/mutex
23:52<dondelelcaro>twb: then my personal favorite way to do this is to use with-lock-ex from chiark-utils-bin
23:53<twb>dondelelcaro: thanks, I'll look into that one.
23:54<dondelelcaro>twb: in which case, you'd do something like with-lock-ex -qf path/to/lockfile rsync ....; or similar
