00:01<bja>twb: If you have an rsync job that last more than 24 hours, wouldn't you need something more sophisticated, like amanda?

00:02<twb>Usually when that happens it's because a user has done something dumb like mv /srv/porno /srv/movies
00:03<twb>Or just because ADSL<-->ADSL is limited by the uplink, not the downlink, and thus blows

00:11<twb>Wow, my brain hurts. There's util-linux's flock(1), liblockfile1's dotlockfile, which is inspired by similar utilities in mutt and procmail, plus logfile-progs' tools which use liblockfile1 -- plus Ian's with-lock-ex, which uses fcntl instead of flock(2).
00:11<twb>You'd think there'd be some consolidation over time :-(

00:38<dondelelcaro>kop: yeah, the procmail one unfortunatly doesn't appear to use fcntl, so may be vulnerable to races
00:39<twb>According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_locking, both flock and fcntl are hysterical

00:49<twb>Pure bash implementations tend to use mkdir, since mkdir(2) is atomic or so
00:49<twb>(IIRC)
00:52<kop>twb: I like being able to wait and timeout so I can retry again later. This for processes that take seconds to shutdown, where I'm running them interactively, so if I stop and restart manually the restart waits an appropriate interval.
00:54<kop>twb: The trouble with lockfile (iirc, via procmail) and everything else is that there's no provision for detecting stale locks. At least flock (iirc) undoes when the process dies.
00:54<kop>twb: s/everything else/everything else I've come across/

01:06<Koma>i can hear the cd rom tryin to read the cd but nothing happens
01:06<twb>Do you have any evidence that the BIOS is booting the CD?
01:07<twb>(Assuming you have a PC/BIOS system.)
01:07<Koma>in the boot sequence i have the cd boot first
01:07<Koma>as far as it saying on boot i have no clue
01:08<Koma>Ive installed fedora before but wanted to try a flavor

01:08<twb>Koma: I conjecture that you are not correctly booting the CD, perhaps because your CD is not burnt correctly.

01:10<jm_>which CD did you download?
01:10<jm_>my bet is it's IA64
01:11<Koma>jm_: yes but i tried i386 first
01:11<jm_>Koma: you need to use amd64 if you want 64bit
01:11<Koma>both gave me the same results
01:12-!-sebash_ [~sebastian@e176197121.adsl.alicedsl.de] has joined #debian
01:12<Koma>jm_: I have an intel though
01:13<twb>IA64 is itanium. amd64 is for x86-64 (amd) and intel-64 (intel), previously known as em64t.
01:13<jm_>Koma: doesn't matter, amd64 is the right one - does CD LED blink when BIOS tries to boot from it?
01:13<Koma>jm_: I only tried IA64 because I opened the i386 exe under windows and it recommended me go IA64
01:13<jm_>Koma: really? it says that?
01:15<Koma>jm_: first question: yes you can hear it trying to read the cd but it just hangs at a blinking _ second question: yeah it does. I thought it was pretty cool besides the fact i downloaded all 5 i386 dvds
01:17<jm_>let me try that
01:17<jm_>Koma: did you verify the CD after burning it?

01:21<Koma>jm_: I don't know where to find the md5sum for ia64
01:21<jm_>Koma: you can't use ia64, burn amd64 or i386 ISO and verify its checksum, let me find a factoid that'll help you
01:21-!-chitchat [~guest@ppp59-167-188-93.static.internode.on.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:22<jm_>!check iso image
01:22<dpkg>To verify you have a valid and official Debian CD/DVD image, see http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/#verify . To test an ISO image was burned correctly, compare the output of md5sum filename.iso; dd if=/dev/cdrom | head -c `stat --format=%s filename.iso` | md5sum You should compare this md5sum to the checksum for the iso image on the mirror.
01:22<jm_>there

01:22<ganomi>I have got problem with luks
01:22<ganomi>after upgrade
01:22<Koma>Thank you all
01:23<ganomi>grub is giving me cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available debian
01:23<ganomi>I tried to generate new initrd using rescue
01:23<ganomi>but it does not help
01:23<ganomi>any idea?
01:23<ganomi>Debian SID
01:25<nepster>ganomi: what's your question again?
01:25<jm_>Koma: alternatively you can try booting from USB or using SBM instead
01:25<twb>ganomi: I am not a GUI! I... am... a CLI!
01:26<twb>jm_: floppy drive? Really?\
01:27<twb>The only thing I used a floppy drive for in the last decade or so was to try to recover data from a SCO5 server
01:27<ganomi>I am CLI too.
01:27<ganomi>well I am not able to boot from LUKS which resides on LVM
01:27<ganomi>after last upgrade
01:28<ganomi>I can get into the system using rescue CD and mounting LUKS manaully
01:28<ganomi>Then I try to update-initramfs
01:28<ganomi>but that still does not help
01:29<ganomi>I get still same message on the boot
01:30<ganomi>similar issue: http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.bugs.dist/browse_thread/thread/2b17c1c4ae69c115?fwc=1
01:30<twb>ganomi: is /boot within LVM?
01:30<ganomi>no, boot is on /dev/sda3
01:30<ganomi>LVM on /dev/sda4
01:31<ganomi>LUKS on /dev/data_vg/volume-sec
01:31<jm_>twb: which of those actually requires a floppy drive?
01:31<twb>jm_: dpkg said SBM was a way to bootstrap a CD from a floppy
01:31<nepster>ganomi: what's the message you are getting in the screen?
01:31<jm_>twb: or a disk or ...
01:31<twb>Obviously dpkg is just stupid
01:31<jm_>just old factoid I guess
01:31<twb>(That's what I meant.)
01:31<ganomi>Grub will boot and I get cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available debian
01:32<ganomi>similar as this : http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.bugs.dist/browse_thread/thread/2b17c1c4ae69c115?fwc=1
01:32<twb>ganomi: is EVMS installed?
01:32<twb>ganomi: it's a bit odd, because EVMS was/is basically competing with LVM.
01:32<twb>I vaguely suspect grub's autodetection is retarded
01:33-!-cahoot [~radix@82.183.196.76] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:34<ganomi>yes
01:34<ganomi>both dmsetup and libdevmapper installed
01:34<twb>Well, if you've demonstrated that to your satisfaction, the next step is obvious: either force grub to do the right thing, or use a different bootloader.
01:35<ganomi>I think this is not grub
01:35<ganomi>this is initramfs
01:35<ganomi>generation
01:35<ganomi>I think that others have to have the same issue
01:36<twb>Sorry, I misread 15:23 <ganomi> grub is giving me cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available debian
01:37<ganomi>ok, normally, grub boots from initrd and find the LUKS volume and ask me for passphrase
01:37<ganomi>this time I am getting this message

01:38<ganomi>it is not for the fist time this happens, however this time I am not able to regenerate the initrd and boot

01:38<ganomi>to find out

02:54<cmot>kop: but what I've noticed is that for the last few kernel versions tcpdump tends to take an insane amount of cpu, perhaps some issues there?
02:54<cmot>OTOH: I also have kvm running, so this might cause such issues as well. But the kvm process as such didn't show load. Oh well.
02:54<cmot>So far it's happened rarely enough (once every week or two weeks) so that I can just reboot
02:55<Raze>jm_: the amd64 will that work fine on an intel?

23:25<heffay>how do i uninstall a package from one repository and install the same package of a different version from another?

23:29<bja>heffay: when you install the new version if it is more recent will overwrite the original version
