01:14<rijo>ah... the internet...
01:14<rijo>:D
01:14<noah>No, neither of them will connect without compiling drivers. I have some guides on how to do it, but I don't know how to do it on a Netinstall.
01:14<noah>Is it even possible?
01:15-!-nil [~nil@189-050-148-182.static.starweb.net.br] has joined #debian
01:15<rijo>do you know what chipset you have for the wired interface?
01:15<noah>Humm... Not really.
01:15<rijo>its really odd if there's not a working driver on the disk
01:16-!-mase_ [~mase@kemp-4d04a478.pool.mediaWays.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:16<noah>Well, I've tried doing a netinstall before, and it says that it can't find the right driver. I generally try some that sound right, but none of them work.
01:16<rijo>so what happens when the installer tries to configure networking?
01:16<noah>I have a guide for setting up the ethernet if that helps.
01:18<moldovean>!kmuto
01:18<dpkg>For Debian Lenny installers with up-to-date kernels, see http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/ . The <bnx2> and <bnx2x> firmware files for Linux 2.6.32 are included in 0116 images.
01:18<moldovean>noah, ^^
01:19<noah>yah?
01:19<noah>And I think I've tried an updated kernel, but there's still some packages I have to get.
01:19<noah>Well, I've tried a 2.6.30 kernel, I think.
01:19<rijo>what happens when the installer tries to configure networking?
01:20<noah>It says it can't find the driver, and it gives me a list of drivers, and none of them work.
01:20<rijo>it should probably list two interfaces to choose from and you have to make sure you select the wired
01:20<rijo>hmmm
01:21<noah>It just says that it can't find the ethernet driver. It never gives me two interfaces to choose from. :(
01:21<rijo>do have any kind of live disk around?
01:21<rijo>knoppix etc.
01:22<moldovean>debian-live
01:22<rijo>;)
01:22<noah>I have a fedora 13 liveCD right now. And I'm running Fedora as we speak.
01:22<rijo>if you can boot that up, do lspci and see what the ethernet chipset is

01:23<noah>Okay, I did that, and I get this: 01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications AR8131 Gigabit Ethernet (rev c0)
01:24<moldovean> lspci -nn | grep Ethernet
01:24<moldovean>noah, try that ^^
01:25<noah>I think I get the same thing: 01:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications AR8131 Gigabit Ethernet [1969:1063] (rev c0)?
01:25<moldovean>, pciid 1969:1063
01:25<judd>[1969:1063] is 'AR8131 Gigabit Ethernet' from 'Atheros Communications' with kernel module 'atl1c' in lenny. See also http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/index.rhtmlx?check=1&lspci=1969:1063
01:25<moldovean>so its atl1c' in lenny
01:26<sney>I seem to remember atl1c is iffy in kernels below 2.6.30, a backport may solve the problem
01:26-!-dermuhle [~stuart@gateway02.m3-connect.de] has joined #debian
01:26<sney>so, kmuto.

01:26-!-diemuehle is now known as themill
01:26<noah>Would running one of the images with 2.6.32 be better?
01:26<moldovean>noah,use kmuto again
01:27<noah>Which image?
01:27-!-themill is now known as Guest135
01:27<moldovean>noah, aread above
01:28<noah>Which part? Judd's comments or the kmuto website? Should I try 2.6.32? And would this possibly work with my wireless, too? That would be more convenient for me, although I can hardwire a connection if I must.
01:28<moldovean>judd's
01:29<rijo>your wireless will likely need a firmware which you'll have to get from non-free after the install so just get the wired working for now
01:29<noah>Okay, that's fine.
01:29<sney>unless it's an ath5k/9k wireless, in which case the installer that works with the wired will work with both (but not support wep or wpa)
01:29<rijo>did you see atl1c in the list of drivers you get during the install?
01:30<noah>I think I might have, but selecting them didn't seem to do anything.
01:30<noah>I think it's ath5k or ath9k, but my network is wpa too.
01:31<rijo>well you can get a 'testing' netinst iso and try that. it has 2.6.32
01:32<moldovean>rijo, let him try kmuto first ..
01:32<rijo>kk
01:32<noah>I think I've tried that before, but the problem was that I would partition and then it couldn't connect to the selected server, which left me high and dry.
01:32<noah>And I wouldn't have a problem with testing if I could get it to work.
01:34<moldovean>noah, amd64 or i386 ?
01:35<noah>I have a 64 bit system, but I have no issues with running 32 bit. Would you suggest one over the other?
01:35<moldovean> i386

01:36<noah>Is this testing?
01:36<moldovean>wget it , yes lastest
01:36<noah>I've had issues with testing before.
01:36<moldovean>not with that one
01:37<rijo>i'm using it now with no problems ;)
01:37<noah>Alright, I'll try it.

01:39<moldovean>heh

01:47<rijo>sid never goes stable
01:47<noah>Ah. Well, to word it better, when do you think the next stable release will be?
01:47<rijo>what is now testing will be the next stable release
01:48<rijo>no one knows...
01:48<noah>:(
01:48<noah>Oh well. I'll just be patient.
01:48<rijo>but there will be a freeze on any new packages a couple of weeks before it happens
01:49<noah>Alright.
01:50<rijo>when you install that testing disk now, the sources.list will say 'squeeze' so dist-upgrade once in a while and you will have the same system as the next stable when its ready

01:53<rijo>and if you like you can just change sources.list to 'testing' and you will still have newer packages after the release ;)
01:53<rijo>most things in testing are just a couple of weeks behind whats in sid
01:54<noah>Cool!

07:15<babilen>I am not really sure how to debug that issue, but believe that it is a thunderbird issue as mutt's "imap-fetch-mail" works flawlessly (as opposed to TB's "Get Mail")

16:09<asa-aa>Any tips on why apt wants to remove these packages? http://dpaste.org/LGWI/
16:12<babilen>asa-aa: You probably removed some gnome metapackage - use "aptitude unmarkauto pkg1,...,pkgN" to mark packages you want to keep as *not* automatically installed. I would suggest to start with one of the gnome metapackages .. "/msg dpkg install gnome" to learn about them

16:14<mezimezim>hi,
16:15<babilen>noah: I don't know about the history - but the kmuto installer typically work well. (It's the stable installer after all)
16:15<asa-aa>babilen, I actually didn't remove anything. That happened after a netinst of lenny :S
16:15<mezimezim>I have changed the position of the minimize/maximize/close buttons on top of the windows in Gnome, anyone knows how to move them back to the right
16:16<babilen>asa-aa: You use apt-get?
16:16<asa-aa>babilen, yes, I do.
16:16<mezimezim>I don't remember where I was playing...in gconf-editor...
16:16<babilen>asa-aa: Have you selected the "desktop" task?
16:16<asa-aa>babilen, yes, I did during installation.
16:16<noah>babilen: My issue was that the ethernet wasn't supported in the older kernel. But I don't know why the testing installer wasn't reognizing my DHCP.
16:16<babilen>asa-aa: Well - the solution to your problem remains the same ...

16:18<asa-aa>babilen, so, in this case, since I don't want to remove any of those, aptitude unmarkauto for all packages, correct?

16:19<noah>I It appears as though my ethernet needs the atl1e driver. Am I gonna need another package for that?
16:19<babilen>asa-aa: No, that is way too much. Start with installing one of the gnome metapackages (gnome-core, gnome-desktop-environment, gnome) -- I would use gnome-core and built upon that, but your needs might be different
16:19<babilen>!install gnome
16:19<dpkg>To install GNOME: install the 'gnome' package to install everything, the 'gnome-desktop-environment' package for slightly less stuff, or the 'gnome-core' package for even less. You will need X installed as well, ask me about <install x>. http://wiki.debian.org/Gnome
16:20<babilen>asa-aa: And use aptitude as it is the default package managing tool in Debian
16:20<asa-aa>babilen, by trying to install gnome, aptitude wants to download all the software I already have installed.
