15:25<sney>isn't yaboot the one where you need a working Mac OS install?
15:25<xlator>Right, sorry. Just wondering if there is a way to specify initrd at the boot prompt, like in grub, or if I have to burn a new disc with a working yaboot.conf
15:26<xlator>I have Mac OS X working, but as far as I know only Old World Macs have to have Mac OS to run Linux.
15:26<sney>my old world powerpc 8500 only needed a floppy with miboot on it.
15:26<xlator>Oh, sexy.
15:27<gsimmons>sney: You're probably thinking of BootX.
15:27<sney>but anyway I don't know about ppc bootloaders that aren't miboot, is there a more general powerpc-debian or -linux channel? they'd probably know best

21:15<dominick>Hi! I'm a user of Debian Lenny 5.05 with linux 2.6.26. I use the stable packages. I was wondering if getting the new packages with a fresh new install/upgrade of the testing would change anything in the usage. I mean, does the installation (from the testing DVD) run the same as the stable one? I'm aware I might experience problems with some packages. but do they at least work as good as the lenny-backports?
21:16<sney>lenny-backports for the most part *are* the same packages as are in testing
21:16-!-juanbeach [~juanbeach@] has quit [Quit: Saliendo]
21:16<sney>and the debian installer is basically the same for testing as it is for stable, there might be some minor differences but if you're familiar with one then they're both easy

21:23-!-Badiane [] has quit [Read error: Operation timed out]
21:23<sney>dominick: testing is generally very usable with only minor issues, many distributions would call it 'stable'... debian just has higher standards ;)
21:24<dominick>nice, I guess i'll be going testing then.
21:24<dpkg>Testing is a continuously updated release between <stable> and <unstable>, currently codenamed <squeeze>. See and ask me about <testing faq> <lenny->squeeze> <testing security> <moving target> <dda> <apt-listchanges> and <bts>. You should have a sound knowledge of Debian packaging to use testing and should be prepared for a bumpy ride at times. Don't use it on things that are critical or on servers.
21:25<dominick>so squeeze is testing. Does squeeze being frozen mean that there'll be very few updates every month?
21:26<sney>once squeeze is frozen it'll be updated on the basis that lenny is now, e.g. security fixes
21:27-!-psych787 [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
21:27<dominick>but according to, "the package is installed into the testing dist from unstable if it is at least 10 days old." doesn't it mean there must be a large amount of updates?

21:28<abrotman>that doesn't work when it's frozen .. and you should use 'squeeze' not 'tesitng'
21:28<abrotman>sney: not anymore
21:28<dominick>so squeeze being frozen means it is now the stable release?
21:28<sney>it's more than lenny anyway, I had 40 the other day and I do aptitude update about once a week

21:31<dominick>okay, i get it. It is about to become the stable release, after a little bit of polishing. So I have a choice now. squeeze or testing!! comments to help me decide please!
21:32<sney>install squeeze, you can always upgrade later
21:32<dominick>err... okay!
21:32<sney>that is, you can upgrade a running system without reinstalling.
21:33<dominick>I'm asuming that squeeze is now the latest version (or maybe only 2 days old), so i'd rather install it!
21:33<dominick>i'd rather upgrade my distro dvd (lenny 5.05) using jidgo! Internet is precious here!
21:33<bremner>There is no advantage to testing right around a release and potential future pain
21:34<sney>guess I better s/testing/squeeze my sources.list
21:35<bremner>Just dist-upgrade using apt <- dominick
21:35<dominick>so suppose I have lenny installed and a squeeze dvd. Does adding the new DVD to my sources allow me to upgrade to squeeze?
21:36<sney>hmm, probably, though why do that when you can just connect to the online repo directly? bw usage would be about the same or less than downloading the whole of DVD1, since there is lots on there you're not using and possibly stuff you are that isn't on it
