01:26<austinium>hi, we have some lenny machines on a LAN here, each one can connect to the internet via LAN, iam trying to teach myself how to setup a linux based router, so iam trying to setup one of the lenny boxes to act as the gateway on the network...i have enabled ip forwarding on the gateway, now i need to find a way to get the gateway to forward all the traffic that it gets to the real gateway on the network

01:30<austinium>non-nat
01:31-!-aranax [~aranax@200.49.190.39] has quit [Quit: Saliendo]
01:33<austinium>the machine iam trying to setup as gateway has just one NIC, would that be a problem?
01:33<blarson>austinium: strange, but you could set up multiple logical interfaces on it
01:35<austinium>blarson: i am new to this, trying to learn as i go...it would be nice if you could point me to some links on this
01:39<blarson>austinium: you can set up networking on eth0:1 eth0:2 etc, then echo 1 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
01:40<blarson>then set the other systems to route through there with appropriate route commands
01:41<blarson>check out the documentation for iptables if you want to filter stuff.
01:42-!-anton [~anton@gbibp9ph1--blueice1n1.emea.ibm.com] has joined #debian
01:45<austinium>blarson: this may sound dumb, but it wouldn't work with a single interface?
01:45-!-MuSicK [~martin@pD9E20B4E.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #debian
01:47<blarson>austinium: you need multiple interfaces for the different addresses you are routing. the :n syntax lets you put them on one physical interface.

01:48-!-ant_ [~anton@gbibp9ph1--blueice4n2.emea.ibm.com] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:48<blarson>you can put the same IP on multiple physical interfaces and route strange sized chunks, but that's not for beginners.
01:52<Arrowmaster>blarson: i dont think the eth0:1 type stuff is used anymore
01:52-!-s_i_m [~s_i_m@a95-93-164-74.cpe.netcabo.pt] has joined #debian
01:53<blarson>Arrowmaster: how would you do it? ip can name it differently if desired, but that just adds confusion IMHO.
01:54<Arrowmaster>i dont know ive just been told a few times its deprecated
01:55<blarson>Arrowmaster: still works fine

04:12<twb>What's the best practice for deploying tc(8) rules (i.e. QoS) on a Squeeze system?
04:13<xjjk>I doubt there is one
04:13<xjjk>I like using shorewall for firewall purposes
04:13<xjjk>tc rules are defined in its configuration files
04:13<xjjk>easy to setup classes, and best of all, easy to actually read
04:13<jm_>I use post-up for QoS
04:14<s_i_m>twb, if-up/if-down scripts?

11:58<dpkg>[trunk] a term from version control systems such as <cvs>, <svn> and <git>. The "trunk" can often be thought of as a developer's playground, the stability (or otherwise) of the code varies from project to project. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trunk_(software) . Debian 2.6.32-trunk-* kernel image/headers packages are obsolete and were removed from the archive ; /msg judd kernel --release squeeze ; see Debian bug #568160 and <kernel abi>.

13:15<Garp>Question: trying to install Flash (non free) on Squeeze 64 bits, I followed instructions as given at http://wiki.debian.org/FlashPlayer everything went OK until "dpkg -i flashplugin-nonfree_10.1.53.64.1_amd64.deb" where I got "ERROR: checksum mismatch install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz". Browsed the web, saw that I'm not the only one, but no real help. Any idea? Thanks.
13:16<filipe>no no.. --filename is to generate log in .html
13:16<jordanm>filipe: I don't see anything in the logwatch manpage, or experience, that would indicate that it generates html
