01:12<yardleydobon>I'm trying to upgrade to testing from lenny. I ran aptitude safe-upgrade but resolving dependencies is taking forever; over 6 hours now. Is that normal?
01:13<blarson>yardleydobon: How much memory do you have?
01:14<yardleydobon>1.5GB
01:14<yardleydobon>It's hitting the harddrive hard too. Can't do anything else.
01:15<yardleydobon>~350000 closed dependencies last time I checked.
01:16<chealer>yardleydobon: I don't know aptitude, but surely not
01:16<blarson>I'd expect a 64MB system to thrash, not a 1.5GB one.

12:09<jordanm>locklace: the wooledge wiki site almost always covers bash and posix methods of accomplishing a task
12:10<jordanm>sh is nice for places when you don't know what shells to exepect... but for my own, I like using features like shopt -s extglob; cp .!(|.) ./ (to copy dotfiles)
12:10<locklace>i maintain that there's no reason to write bash-specific shell scripts
12:10<@Ganneff>i maintain you are wrong
12:10<locklace>if sh isn't good enough, you should be using a real language. or failing that, perl
12:11<jordanm>err, well that should have been ~/ instead of ./, else "cp" doesn't make much sense :)

16:39<s4br3>Hi, Im running iceweasel on my Radeon fglrx box since years. Since some weeks before summer I have parts or the entire iceweasel app blacked out! As a workaround I used Google Chrome in the meantime. No other app is affected. Iceweasel works perfectly on my nVidia machine. Is this a known issue?

19:05<locklace>!uuid
19:05<dpkg>[uuid] Universally Unique IDentifier, used to reference disk partitions (among other things). See currently known partition UUIDs with `blkid'. In /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst, use "UUID=dead-beef-0420-etc" as the partition name. Helps to cope with device name changes such as hda->sda (<libata> transition) or changes in USB disk order discovery. <LVM> tools accept PV/VG/LV UUIDs as arguments, use {pv,vg,lv}display to acquire.
