00:01<Zokudu>btw alex thank you that put it much more simply for me

00:13<Zokudu1>Hehe wow crashed my system but its a start thanks a ton :D
00:14-!-Zokudu [~matthew@pool-98-110-50-96.cmdnnj.fios.verizon.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:15-!-Zokudu1 is now known as Zokudu

00:21-!-Lanz [~user@216.8.148.171] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:22<borden>does anybody here know how to troubleshoot an out of memory error (as in figure out which process(es) caused it)?
00:23<jgoppert>install sysmon, then sort by memory usage
00:23<jgoppert>also valgrind is good for check specific programs for memory leaks
00:24<borden>this isn't a development program. I think it's something between Iceweasel, Java and/or OpenOffice and the logs are (predictably) useless
00:25<Alex__>Hey, I'm having two problems, and I'm having a little difficulty tracking down where it they originate... 1. The KDE window manager sometimes just shows a gray box, changing focus to another window and back fixes it. Trying to figure out if this is a bug, or possibly a problem with my ATI drivers (10.7) (KDE 4.4.5)
00:26-!-NickyP [~bill@h28.68.255.206.cable.htsp.cablelynx.com] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:26<Alex__>2. A .mov video with SVG-3 video encoding won't play on VLC, Kaffine, or MPlayer, but it will with ffplay. I'm wondering if this could be an ffmpeg integration bug, as Audacity won't use the ffmpeg I have either.
00:28<borden>In the messages log, I see Kopete launching oom-killer, then I get a call-trace dump. Is there any way I can read that to isolate the problem?
00:31-!-frk [~jcn@189.58.218.141.dynamic.adsl.gvt.net.br] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:31<borden>jgoppert: and I have KDE's system activity installed but it's not much good when the system is unusuable because it's throwing oom errors, is it?
00:32-!-gdb [~cbell@circe.inetdb.com] has joined #debian
00:33-!-theobald [~theobald@p4FEE0B85.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #debian
00:33-!-theobald [~theobald@p4FEE0B85.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit []
00:33<jgoppert>borden: trace dumps aren't much good without debugging symbols usually, if you had debugging symbols you could start each process with gdb, then backtrace
00:34-!-traveler [~traveler@76-230-63-128.lightspeed.livnmi.sbcglobal.net] has joined #debian
00:35<borden>jgoppert: so you're suggesting that I restart each program again within gdb, try to recreate the crash and then hope and pray that I'll be able to rescue the dumps before kdm restarts on me?
00:36-!-traveler [~traveler@76-230-63-128.lightspeed.livnmi.sbcglobal.net] has quit []
00:37<jgoppert>usually gdb will pause a process before it seg faults, might have a shot
00:40-!-leo [~leo@190.172.204.165] has joined #debian
00:41<leo>hola
00:42-!-jhutchins_lt [~jonathan@64-151-37-66.dyn.everestkc.net] has joined #debian

00:45<grimnar>any mysql power users here?
00:46<grimnar>mysql/phpmyadmin
00:46-!-Zokudu_ [~IceChat7@pool-98-110-50-96.cmdnnj.fios.verizon.net] has joined #debian
00:49<borden>the problem isn't a seg fault, it's a massive memory leak which hangs the system until oom (I'm guessing) kills kdm looking for memory
00:51-!-tazz [~gaurav@triband-mum-120.60.135.76.mtnl.net.in] has joined #debian
00:51-!-jhutchins_lt [~jonathan@64-151-37-66.dyn.everestkc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:51<borden>I thought the kernel was designed to prevent memory leaks from maxing out memory (and I have 2 gigs worth so it's not like I don't have any to spare) by reserving a percentage of it to executive functions so, in my case, I could have just enough control over the system to figure out the problem
00:52<fran>borden: why don't you try using valgrind to detect where the memory leak comes
00:53-!-Alex__ [~kvirc@c-68-59-203-12.hsd1.tn.comcast.net] has left #debian [Once you know what it is you want to be true, instinct is a very useful device for enabling you to know that it is]

00:53-!-gdb [~cbell@circe.inetdb.com] has quit [Quit: gdb]
00:55<fran>and not always the oom is caused by the same program that's being reported by the oom-killer
00:56-!-grimnar [~andreas@pc109-243.ktv.no] has quit [Quit: grimnar]
00:56<borden>fran: no, I don't think kopete is the suspect since it was trying to free up memory but I thought it would have thrown a process id or something for me to work with
00:56-!-gdb [~cbell@circe.inetdb.com] has joined #debian
00:57<fran>well, if it's easy to reproduce, I'd suggest you having a terminal with top running
00:57<borden>fran: I'll try to recreate the out-of-memory exception in valgrind but I was hoping that I could work off the logs
01:00-!-Judas_PhD [~kevin@misterfluffy.dsl.xmission.com] has joined #debian
01:03<stevecotton>borden: setting a ulimit for virtual memory use might help get the right process killed (ulimit is documented in bash's manpage); it's inherited by child processes
01:07<fran>the easiest is to just watch the top while the oom is happening, you can press M in top to sort the processes by memory usage

09:56<twb>Cyder: yep, that's my analysis.
09:58<twb>danlii: if you're tracking testing or unstable, you'll get that kind of thing from time to time. It's usually due to a minor conflict.
