00:10<deniz>I know that being cd-ed to the directory i want to store the files and then doing photorec /dev/mapper/debian-swap_1 would work (just for learning purposes) but why isn't sudo photorec /home/deniz/Desktop/tempStorage /dev/mapper/debian-swap_1 working?: http://pastebin.com/0zRqdmSY
00:10<emkuf>what is xterm?
00:11<deniz>emkuf, a terminal?
00:11-!-esaym153 [~esaym153@cpe-70-120-95-19.satx.res.rr.com] has joined #debian
00:11<deniz>emkuf, "X terminal emulator"

00:12<gsimmons>acu: Uh, USB 3.0 is supported since Linux 2.6.31 (xhci driver).
00:12<emkuf>but when I try to do each of those 1 at a time and enter "start X" nohing happnes
00:14<MrFrood>emkuf: try startx iceWM
00:14<acu>gsimmons - that would be great - I have a bunch of usb3 and was tough - I needed newer kernel and blah blah - a nice girl working for Intel have worked on the usb 3.0 driver - but I will look right now on it - that would be awesome
00:14<deniz>is usb 3.0 popular? i haven't seen it in real life yet
00:14<emkuf>mmk
00:15<deniz>at least i don't think i did
00:15<emkuf>do I need both xorg and xterm?
00:16<acu>deniz: is not popular - but almost any new board has it - it is 10 times faster than 2.0 there are no limits of distance etc
00:16<acu>it is very important development- and by the end of the year I think new devices will show up
00:16<deniz>acu, i knew the 10 times faster thing but by the no limits of distance you mean unlimitted extention cords galore? :D

00:17<emkuf>internet on the moon
00:17<deniz>lol wired internet to the moon
00:17<acu>deniz: if it goes longer distance - it means you do not need extension :)
00:17<MrFrood>emkuf: yes, xorg = graphical server & xterm = terminal
00:17<emkuf>ahhh
00:18<deniz>acu, what if you have a usb 3.0 supporting mobo and a usb 2.0 device, is there still no distance limit or there is?

06:08<locklace>Marx82: what version of debian and which inetd package
06:08<themill>jm_: yeah, I'm not doing well at finding any documentation about how one is supposed to do this, however.
06:09<themill>(README.Debian helpfully contains links to documentation on the opensuse wiki that has now been removed)
06:09<jm_>themill: hmm sorry can't help - I built my own resume image for a custom kernel
06:09*themill thought suspend problems were solved around 2.6.9....
06:09<locklace>themill: what's the exact error message

06:12<themill>locklace: s2ram fails in other exciting ways. (machine never comes back up successfully)
06:13<locklace>themill: there were several major problems with intel wired chipsets either breaking suspend/resume or failing to resume
06:13<locklace>one is fixed by http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=7e15b0c9991dfe0bf05a2f8fab9154bb7827622e
06:14<themill>locklace: judging by the date, that should have made it into 2.6.32, shouldn't it?
06:16<locklace>i think so, my first step would probably be to boot a more recent test kernel and just check the suspend/resume behaviour
06:16<gsimmons>themill: That was committed in 2.6.33.

12:53<dpkg>udev has the ability to statically rename Ethernet cards based on MAC address since version 0.090. The addresses are configured in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules (Lenny, Squeeze) or /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules (Etch). If you want the mappings to change, edit the respective file. To apply changes: "udevadm trigger" ("udevtrigger" on Etch) or reload the relevant driver module. See also <forcedeth mac>, <udev>.

17:29<sander_m_>Followup question: my script runs fine when I run it in a terminal (e.g: python myscript.py). But when it runs in the background as a daemon, it fails. In both instances it runs as the same user. It's just that one runs in the foreground and the other runs in the background. The script runs fine in Lenny, but not in Sqeeze. Any chance that something like PolicyKit is simply getting in my way here?

20:50<blarson>!xterm
20:50<dpkg>i guess xterm is the X terminal emulator and that's all it does: It emulates a terminal under X. Once you get used to the shell, you will start to feel somewhat limited in your actions when you only have a mouse to click at things. That's why so many Unix users don't like Windows (well, that and the "big evil corporation" thing...). I bet that in six months from now, "GUI" will mean "four xterms and a background picture" to you. see xterm-debian
20:50<weasel>my laptop's biggest drawback is that it only does 4 xterms a screen
