00:26<max__>hello. I did a kernel upgrade from apt and now my 3w-xxxx driver seems to be loaded after my onboard sil_sata driver. This is causing what used to be sda to be sdc and sdb to sda and so on. I can't boot beyond busybox/grub because the kernel is trying to mount the root fs to the wrong drive. any ideas on how to fix this?

08:39<pavi>very sill question : I am unable to umount /opt because some of the processes are running on it . I used /opt to mount an SD card , I removed it directly . Now I cant mount it anywhere else as the device is already mounted
08:40-!-mode/#debian [+l 420] by debhelper
08:40<pavi>The processes on /opt came from google using /opt to install its stuff
08:40<rpetre>pavi: what does fuser -m /opt say?
08:41<pavi>rpetre, solved it . It was a process of epiphany-browser which was using the recent google talk plugin from /opt
08:41<pavi>killed the browser !
08:42<rpetre>pavi: try to umount the device before ejecting it in the future
08:43<pavi>rpetre, I didnt want to kill the browser for unmounting . Now I had no choice :d
08:43*pavi was stupid to use the convenient /opt to mount stuff

15:00<jcole>how do i set debconf settings for packages with another package? ie: lets say i have a package called "mydebconfsettings" (which depends on postfix and kerberos) and want to set debconf values for postfix and kerberos before they are configured
15:01<gravity>That's a policy violation and really shouldn't be done
15:02<jcole>having a package that has debconf values is a policy violation?
15:02<gravity>Having a package mess with other packages' debconf values is
15:02<jordanm>jcole: having your package modify some other package's configurations is
15:02<gravity>That said, if it's for your own system, istr that the debconf spec in the policy package has instructions on how to do this.

15:03<jcole>the debian install preseed file already does this
15:03<gravity>I had to poke around this stuff like 7 or 8 years ago for configure-debian
15:04<gravity>Debian installer is a special case. udebs are pretty much exempt from policy because it's the installer
15:04<jcole>so, is the debian installer violating policy by preseeding values?
15:04<jcole>i see
15:04-!-bdr [] has joined #debian
15:04<gravity>But yeah, check the debconf policy if you really want to do this. There's also the debconf code, which should be understandable if you know perl.
15:04<PesareBad>هلا والله
15:05<jcole>well, im already preseeding fresh installs using d-i... its the existing installs i want to now preseed
15:05<gravity>The shell script interface should make this possible as well, but I never saw particularly good docs on that.
15:05<jcole>but, i want to preseed via a package
15:05<gravity>jcole: You may be better off with just custom postfix et al. packages
15:05<gravity>That's probably easier in the long run.
15:05<gravity>Well... mabye not. I'm not sure honestly. I've not done it. It's kinda hacky either way :-)
15:06<gravity>But yeah... debconf policy docs are your best bet, followed by the source.
15:06-!-jacks__ [] has joined #debian
15:06<jcole>gravity: ive current got it like this: package A has debconf values which are set via debconf-set-selections, package B has the depends packages (including package A)
15:06<gravity>The spec is quite well written on the whole
15:06-!-bdr [] has quit []
15:07<gravity>jcole: You'll need to have package A pre-depend on B

15:07<gravity>Check the policy to make sure that they'll get configured in the right order. That's a detail that escapes me.
15:07<jcole>thanks gravity
15:08<gravity>(assuming I got A and B right)
15:08<gravity>Your custom debconf settings should pre-dep on the main package.
15:09<jcole>gravity: is that so package B configures package A first?
15:09<gravity>I don't know what B and A are.
15:09<gravity>Your custom debconf-settings package should pre-depend on postfix and any other packages whose configs are being ultimately modified. Otherwise your custom settings might get overridden.
15:10<jcole>gravity: exactly
15:10<jcole>gravity: predepends is probably the policy violation i was looking for ;)

21:28<dpkg>sid is the <unstable> version of Debian. Sid is the destructive kid in Toy Story. It is NOT an acronym, but is sometimes backronymed Still In Development anyway. Do not use sid unless you have the skill to find your way out of the mess that broken packages may put you in; sid is not supported in #debian because sid users should be able to solve their own problems. Sid will never be released. See also <sid faq> <unstable>.
