02:04<twb>e.g. instead of "eth4" I tell udev to name it "dmz", so I can just say -i dmz in my firewall.

04:53<rpetre>and xfs on lvm on the other disks
04:54<rpetre>i had some issues with the mtpscsi driver hanging on ata passthrough commands
04:54<rpetre>i had to apply a patch over the squeeze kernel for that
04:54<rpetre>(it hang hard after a few smartctl commands)
04:54<jm_>rpetre: even if dpkg calls fdatasync only for a given file, I think ext* do a global sync
04:54<rpetre>for all disks?
04:55<rpetre>or just the ext* filesystems

You are everything bad on the Internet. Honestly, have any of you ever used a compiler? I mean, I guess it's fun making fun of people because of the software they run, but you all take to a whole new level. This is even worse than running an old version ...
09:38<ym>... of Apache. Don't be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I'm pretty much perfect. I have even fewer viruses than Macs, and can run a web server and SSH server simultaneously. What servers can you run, other than "unsecured network folder"? I also get weekly package updates, and have a banging hot firewall (It just detected some malicious packets; Shit was SO blocked). You are all faggots who should just kill yourselves. Thanks ...

13:21<grimnar>Is it possible to create a swap partition when I forgot to make one?

13:22<grimnar>But what do I use to create?

13:23<cthuluh>cfdisk and sfdisk also
13:23<grimnar>yeah okay
13:24<cthuluh>just don't do mistakes ;)
13:24<grimnar>Thats why Im asking
13:25<grimnar>"No free sectors available"
13:25<grimnar>fdisk /dev/sda -> n -> 4 -> no free ...
13:26<cthuluh>then 1) ask yourself whether you really need swap. 2) can you get some free space on your disk (by resizing one partition) 3) if that's temporary, why not use a swap file?
13:27<grimnar>1) yes, not enough ram 2) probably, but dont know how to, 3) Have no idea.
13:27<cthuluh>2) means you need to resize the filesystem before resizing partition. gparted can handle that. but the filesystem needs to be unmounted first
13:27<grimnar>okay
13:28<grimnar>But I really don't need it yet, since this is ad-hoc solution before I get a new disk
13:28<grimnar>So I just run without swap
13:28<cthuluh>a new disk or more ram?
13:28<grimnar>new disk
13:29<grimnar>My old one broke, so I had to rsync the data on the old disk and hence I forgot the swap-partition
13:29<grimnar>when I moved the stuff to a the "new" disk
13:30<atrus>you really should have swap, regardless of how much ram you have.
13:30<grimnar>(One month old WD Raptor if someone is taking a note)
13:31<atrus>afaik, linux behaves poorly without swap.
13:31<grimnar>atrus: Dont worry, I'll have a new disk within 24 hours
13:31<atrus>gparted has a bootable cdrom iso that you can resize things with.

17:54<Nazcafan>hey
17:54<osirisx>it appears I can't install gnome-mount on a squeeze installation without gnome going tits up - only version 7.2 available
17:54<Nazcafan>how do I get rid of the BOM in a utf-8 file
17:55<osirisx>BOM?
17:55<thekittster>byte-order marker
17:55<thekittster>maybe iconv could do it
17:55<osirisx>thx
17:56<smv>osirisx, gnome-mount is not in sid. i supoe is going to become obsolete at some point? also you don't have to use uuids in fstab, perhaps you can use only path to reduce the numbers of entries in the file
17:56<smv>s/supoe/supose
17:57<osirisx>smv: ok thx - I'll give it a whirl
17:58<Nazcafan>thekittster, couldn't find anything relevant in iconv man page
17:58<osirisx>from the gnome project's perspective there is a new gnome-mount available for gnome 2.28 - I guess it doesn't currently play well with squeeze

23:46<BlueG>Any idea what the problem is here?

23:51<bja>BlueG: Well if you don't have that many packages or programs then there might be something wrong. FWIW I am evaluating between an update and a fresh install for several servers.
23:51<BlueG>well, that is what I did, so I guess I will give it some more time. See if it has accomplished anything by tomorrow
