02:07<Anno[Laptop]>Hi. I'm having a problem with Debian 5 on my Dell Inspiron 1525. I want to use an external monitor, but there's no picture on that one even though it's connected and the monitor seems to recognize that there is some signal. It worked previously, and the console output still appears when I shut down the computer, but there's no output there now. Previously, I just plugged it in and it worked. Now it fails. Can anyone help?

05:08<smv>buffoon_work, dd is the best tool. use /dev/urandom if you also need to fill the disk with random data, or only with /dev/zero if you just want to delete the data. any data once overwriten can't be recovered.
05:09<koollman>buffoon_work: what's the use case ? erasing server disks before putting them back into use ?

05:11<koollman>buffoon_work: in this case, use a hammer. big one. But it varies with your real needs ;)
05:11<buffoon_work>koollman, no, it's more data from our clients that should not be recovered when we recycle/sell the disks
05:12<s4br3>Hi, my CD/DVD combo works only with DVDs, but not any CD. This means I cannot boot with a live cd. I have no idea how find a culprit here. I have tried to find a solution using Google but that only results in tips for other OS. I run Debian Sid. Thanks for any help!!!
05:16<smv>buffoon_work, no data can be recovered if overwriten. just make a test. fill a single disk with zero using dd, and try to recover anything from it, using *any* recovery software that exists in the universe. if you can recover atleast a single bit, then you should consider using a hammer.

10:31<chris_st>Hey noob question here... please let me know if there's a better forum for this. I have a Debian (squeeze) machine here, with two ethernet cards. I've got eth0 set up for DHCP, from my router, and it's happy. eth1 is set up with a static IP address. I've got my laptop set up for a (different, of course :-) static IP address, just the two of them plugged into a hub.
10:32<mAniAk->and?
10:32<chris_st>The laptop and the debian box refuse to ping/ssh each other; "netstat -nr" on the laptop shows that it can see the IP address (and MAC address!).
10:32<chris_st>I just get "no route to host" for pings
10:33<StucKman_>chris_st: did you set any gateway in the static interface?
10:33<StucKman_>are the ip's in the same ip network that the dhcp interface?

16:29<CosmicRay>So I have squeeze on amd64. I have tried both sets of instructions at http://wiki.debian.org/FlashPlayer#DebianTesting.27Squeeze.27amd64 to get flash installed. Both appear to install correctly, but don't actually work in iceweasel. about:plugins doesn't show the plugin even though it's present in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. any ideas?
16:30-!-Tr0r [~tr0r@ppp85-140-55-242.pppoe.mtu-net.ru] has quit []
16:30<muep>I have the idea of abandoning flash, but few people seem to like it :-(
16:31<twb>muep: we don't even have flash yet -- d-i is still being patched to target it
16:32<muep>twb: are you talking about something else than Adobe Flash Player?
16:32<twb>oh, right. I was talking about MTD
16:33<muep>:-)
16:33<twb>IME people mainly want youtube to work; for which you can just spoof User-Agent as Safari and use HTML5
16:34<jordanm>the newest gnash was announced as 100% youtube compatible
16:34<twb>Loading a flash program to play video is IMO dumber than just playing the video
16:34<jordanm>I saw the maintainer asking for a squeeze exception for that reason, not sure if he got it
16:34<jordanm>twb: I use html5, but not all of the videos work
16:35<twb>jordanm: did you install gstreamer-plugins-* ?
16:35<muep>I wonder if the exception would help much, since youtube is likely to evolve quite a lot during a debian release cycle
16:35<jordanm>twb: that is not the reason they do not work. all the videos that include ads do not support html5
16:35<twb>jordanm: oh, righ
16:35<twb>...t
16:35<jordanm>also annotations IIRC
16:36<twb>I basically just do mplayer -aonull `youtube-dl -g <URL some loser claims is interesting>`
16:36<twb>Er, -vonull.

18:38<gnufan>setting up nagios for the first time. Is there a good explanation of installing nrpe anywhere? Ideally on Debian. As I think I now need to add the nrpe server to the nagios server, and I suspect I need to add commands to the nrpe server, and I'm sure it should be more straight forward than it seems.
18:39<lindi->gnufan: I found passive checks using nsca easier and more secure

18:41<mAniAk->gnufan: you install nrpe server on the client, should come with some commands
18:41<gmarselis>gnufan: it is not really nessecary to instal nagios nrpe. passive checks, or checks over ssh work better.

18:43<shadowcat>there's a sqeeuze pool now?
18:43<gnufan>lindi-: I have no idea here - just been reading the NRPE versus check_by_ssh and settled on NRPE, didn't read about NCSA. I think I probably want nrpe since I eventually want to run commands. But I'm lacking good overview documentation. I can find lots of detail stuff.

18:44<mAniAk->whats wrong with nrpe anyway
18:45<gmarselis>mAniAk-: it allows for the remote execution of commands
18:45<lindi->nsca is easy to tunnel over email
