04:56*mjt realizes that he - apparently - can't get rid of udev in squeeze anymore, as he managed so far. There's new dependency on udev: pulseaudio.
04:57<mjt>is there any other sound server that does network sound like pulseaudio but does not require udev?
04:58-!-gravity [] has joined #debian
04:59<muep>why not just keep udev?
05:00<mjt>maybe i should try again
05:01<mjt>each time it were a nightmare
05:01-!-gidna [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
05:02<muep>I have no idea how I could even notice that udev is there
05:02<muep>except that things just work
05:03<mjt>my main complain is that it tries to load drivers for everything, which breaks every second machine which out there.
05:04<devil>break in what way?
05:04<mjt>it's just unfeasible to blacklist that stuff, much simpler is to stop the damn thing from loading stuff
05:04<mjt>OOPSes and lockups
05:04<locklace>mjt: that's why you build your own kernel
05:04<locklace>mjt: and don't use initrd
05:05<mjt>i build my kernel since 2.2 times
05:05-!-gravity_ [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
05:05<mjt>not using initrd for 200+ machines is, well, almost impossible
05:06<locklace>udev doesn't actually load anything anyway afaict, just acts on kernel device notifications
05:06<locklace>although i admit that it sucks and the whole process is an opaque mess
05:08<locklace>if you want to stop things loading, you have to frob your modprobe config, and if you use initramfs you have to frob it there
05:08<mjt>well, udev doesn't. it calls modprobe
05:08<mjt>according to its rules
05:08<mjt>it's not modprobe config
05:09<mjt>it's udev config that should be modified
05:09<mjt>to stop it from calling modprobe
05:09<mjt>actually all these problems are kernel and hardware bugs
05:10<mjt>somewhat oldish hw (many PIII machines, some PIV, lots of PIV-era xeons)
05:10<mjt>they work just fine w/o udev

17:34<kyojin>hello to all, I have a problem with downloads via FTP, if I wanna download a file larger than 80mb it will fail, I installed firefox and chromium to see if it was a bug in ice weasel but the same thing happens, any one know why?

23:46<heffay>I cannot get my HP TC4200 tablet/pc to identify the wacom tablet/digitizer built into it. lsusb and lspci dont' show any wacom devices. I have xserver-xorg-input-wacom installed and I'm running squeeze.
23:46<heffay>Can someone assist me in troubleshooting this?
