01:07<twb>iwconfig wlan0 mode master --error--> Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
01:08<twb>...does this mean my wifi device cannot act as an AP?
01:10<gsimmons>twb: Is your device using a mac80211-based driver? Master mode operation is now performed in user space.
01:10<twb>gsimmons: it's an rt73usb
01:10<twb>Namely 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501USB Wireless Adapter
01:10<twb>So: that behaviour is expected, and I should use hostapd?
01:11<gsimmons>twb: That's right; /msg dpkg hostapd and use its nl80211 driver.
01:11<twb>(To address the X/Y problem: I'm trying to turn my router into a wifi AP.)
01:11<twb>Thanks.
01:13<twb>(I asked wiki.d.o about hostapd and it went on about prism chipsets, which made me wonder if hostapd was the Wrong Thing. I guess wiki.d.o is stale.)
01:14<gsimmons>Which page, specifically?
01:15<twb>wiki.debian.org/hostapd
01:15<twb>"Host AP driver for Intersil Prism2/2.5/3, hostapd, and WPA Supplicant"
01:15<gsimmons>That doesn't exist. Did you mean /hostap?
01:15<twb>Oh, sorry
01:15<twb>I'm all confused
01:15<twb>Yes, http://wiki.debian.org/hostap and http://hostap.epitest.fi/

01:17<gsimmons>Right, /hostap is about the 802.11b driver, not the user space access point (hostapd). I don't believe wiki.d.o has anything substantial about the latter.
01:17<twb>Obviously I clicked on it without seeing the -d was absent

01:25<twb>Okey dokey.

07:44<kl4q>hi debian, can I ask questions here?
07:44<locklace>!ask
07:44<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
07:47<kl4q>I have a problem with making my 5.1 speakers work with Debian Squeeze. I've got a laptop with 2 output jacks and one input. On windows i have an option to use mic jack as an output. Is there any way to do it on debian?

21:57<Brian_R>Possibly !pastebin dmesg (with sensitive info (if any) stripped out)
21:57<Brian_R>!pastebin
21:57<dpkg>Do not paste more than 2 lines to this channel. Instead, use: http://paste.debian.net/ http://pastie.org/ http://pastebin.com/ http://pastebin.ca/ or http://picpaste.com/ for pics.
