02:18<dominick>Hi! I installed squeeze this morning, and when gdm3 started, I saw that the resolution was small. I installed NVIDIA's non-free driver, which fixed the resolution. I installed compiz and configured it, and have browsed the internet for quite some time. Then, I did a /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop to work in the command line for a while. When I started my gdm3 again, the resolution was screwed up, and Monitors and "NVidia Display Settings" displayed an Unknown mo

07:50<abrotman>why do you need a pdf viewer to work with mupdf, if it is a viewer?
07:51<Idden>Because mupdf has no continuous reading

07:51<abrotman>what is your current DE/WM ?
07:51<abrotman>Personally, I use evince for reading PDFs

09:53<blarson>elo: change the options you are mounting the cdrom with.
09:54<elo>blarson: how can I do this? I'm not using cli to mount the cdrom. It's done by GNOME. How can I change GNOME mount options? I can't find anything related to this in the admin panel.
09:55<mAniAk-_>unmount and mount it

10:16<blarson>Most cdroms are created with options to make them world readable. So some of the blame rests on who created the cd.
10:19<elo>I agree that's stupid. But is there a reason why a cdrom shouldn't be mounted as a+rx ? This would ensure this problem wouldn't ever happen.

15:06-!-SirMuh [~SirMuh@mnhm-4d013d92.pool.mediaWays.net] has joined #debian
15:06<jaimesilva>Is there a way to make a slow copy of a directory, I'm moving my partitions from ext4 to ext3 (ext4 is still too buggy) in the same disk and it is slowing the hole system...

15:07<jaimesilva>since there is time to make the change I will want the copy process to be slowed down so it allows the system to function normally, how can I achieve that?
15:07<Xenguy>jaimesilva: maybe use 'renice' to change the job priority ?
15:08<jaimesilva>Xenguy: that's a good option, thanks. Any other suggestions?
15:08<Xenguy>jaimesilva: e.g.: renice 19 -p <PID>
15:09<old>jaimesilva: Use `ionice -c3 cp ...`.
15:10<Xenguy>old: never heard of 'ionice' before

15:11<old>jaimesilva: ionice can "reionice" running processes too.
15:12<jaimesilva>I got it, I can use the -p option
15:12<old>Xenguy: It's renice's cousin, but for disk usage. ;-)

15:17<old>Xenguy: ionice sets the priority for IO operations (such as reading and writing to disks), renice sets the nice level which is taken into account when a processor is being assigned to a process.
15:18<jaimesilva>Xenguy: I guess renice is to slow down processes that take a lot of CPU and ionice is for processes that use a lot of disk

23:03<edbian>I'm going to do a bunch of work with 2 directories with long path names (that have spaces). How can I save the path in variable? Everything keeps erroring out because of the spaces in the names.
23:03<edbian>I'm doing like tmp='/some/really long/path/name'
23:05<rijo>put brackets around the name
23:05<edbian>rijo, tmp=[some/really long/path name/] ?
23:05<edbian>Do I need the quotes or the escape \'s ?

23:06<rijo>hmm i'm not sure how it will work as part of a path but putting *sorry quotes not brackets around the names
23:06<rijo>usually works
23:07<edbian>I was using quotes.
23:07<edbian>I can't even: tmp='some/really long/name'; cd $tmp
23:07<rijo>so do that and put double quotes around the name with the spaces
23:07<edbian>what?
23:08<edbian>I don't understand what you mean.
23:08<rijo>... i'm screwing it up
23:08<edbian>ha ha
23:08<rijo>try tmp="/some/path/'name with spaces'"
23:08<edbian>rijo, good idea
23:08<rijo>quotes inside quotes
23:10<edbian>no dice
23:10<rijo>hmm i'm sure there's a way
23:10<rijo>i'm not that good at scripting but its something like that
23:10<edbian>tmp="/some/'path with spaces'/a [tab no longer works now]
23:10<edbian>ha
