03:55<inkbottle>Here is a cut and past of a question already asked on debian-gnome; see it I'm lucky...
03:55<inkbottle>Hi, I've installed gnome-shell on one computer with installing gnome3-session package +and+ gnome-session. And it works. But now I'm trying on an other computer to install gnome3 gnome-shell +without+ having gnome installed already. And so far it doesn't work at all.
03:55<inkbottle>I've given a try with installing metacity (though it shouldn't be needed), but still unlucky.
03:56<inkbottle>So the general idea would be: gnome3-session without gnome-session: how to?
03:58<Efreak>gnome3-session and gnome-session look to me like they do the same thing for different versions of gnome
03:59<Efreak>I know you can tell apt/dpkg to install a package even if its prereqs arent installed, but idk how or if it would work right

04:00<inkbottle>hi
04:01<Nemoder>inkbottle: maybe you need to update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
04:02<inkbottle>Efreak: no, it is the contrary: there is no such dependencies, gnome3 does not require gnome at all. But without the install of gnome it doesn't work at all
04:02<Nemoder>inkbottle: you might try running xterm and launching gnome-shell from there to see why it wont run
04:03<inkbottle>Nemoder: could be, but the session manager (kdm now), allow me to choose the wm I'll use (I check gnome3); so is there luck it would make a difference
04:03<inkbottle>Nemoder: yes, I've done it
04:04<Nemoder>what does it say?
04:04<inkbottle>seems there is lot of configurations that are not ok (without gnome installed)

07:36<inkbottle>I suggest gnome-shell and gnome3-session must depend on gnome-session. The reasons are for me it works fine when installed together gnome-session; and doesn't at all when gnome-session not installed; the second reason is that in the script gnome-shell-build-setup.sh, they check for the presence of gnome-session

22:43<Requia>Driver compatability maybe, if it was only the driver it wouldn't be solvable with an upstream install
22:43<Nemoder>if you built your current driver against the old kernel and then updated your kernel and didn't update the driver it is likely to have problems
