08:51<topro>Hi, I was trying to migrate an up-to-date (as far as possible) debian squeeze lvm-on-raid1 setup to lvm-on-raid6 by adding a raid6 array as physical device to my lvm, moving my virtual drives to that array and then removing/deleting the raid1 array. partition scheme is plain, so (at the moment) a single partition holds /,/boot,/var,/home,...
08:52<topro>Everything went as expected except the system's ability to boot of that lvm partition. Meanwhile I set up another squeeze box with lvm-on-raid6 from the start which boots without any issues, so it is possible.

11:34<_Dave>we want to manage the deploy of our code to live machines
11:35<themill>_Dave: packaging is there to make it easy to copy things across thousands of machines -- you said this was only to be copied to one other server in which case packaging isn't sensible.

11:35<themill>_Dave: packaging is also there to dependency resolution. You've not told us what "some files" actually means.
11:36<amphi>Martin_CZ: an xorg driver, I would think
11:37<themill>_Dave: if you're wanting to deploy something into /opt on many machines then yes, a package makes sense. http://blogs.cae.tntech.edu/mwr/2007/05/28/making-debian-packages-from-commercial-software/ (It's hard to answer questions when we don't have the context!)
11:38<bremner>_Dave: I suggest starting with working through the new maintainers guide; it is less likely to be out of date and wrong than third-party tutorials.

11:49<bja>blackxored: lxde is nice but if you really need something minimal try some of the tiled window managers available
11:49<blackxored>here's the thing I'm building a xen dom0 machine
11:49<blackxored>what do you think?
11:51<themill>petionet: it could also be that you've not told mysql to try to use utf-8 on the connection between php and database. It defaults to latin1 and that could also cause the sort of problem you see, I suspect.
11:51<themill>dpkg: tell petionet about mysql utf8
11:51<petionet>hm
11:52<themill>petionet: you need to have *everything* correct before it will work. db, db->php connection, html encoding meta-tags, server headers. If any of them are wrong, you get gibberish.
11:52<petionet>ok i'll see again everything
