11:41<supplicant>is there a way to see which install CD contains a particular package? parted in this case
11:41<__diego__>lets say I have two laptops and would like to use them both at the same time, but not with sinergy only (sharing keyboard / mouse), I would like them to somehow run the SAME os so I can pass windows from one screen to the other
11:41<__diego__>:)
11:41<__diego__>any ideas?
11:42<__diego__>and of course, use both cpus and the sum of memory (2 + 6 GB = 8 GB)
11:42<dominick>__diego__, interesting, I'd like to know how to do that myself!
11:43<dominick>__diego__, I don't think sharing of resources is possible!
11:43<__diego__>dominick: it might be interesting to do it
11:44<__diego__>I can already share keyboard / mouse even if running different OS (sinergy will do that over the network)
11:44<__diego__>I was thinking ... somehow if you make one boot over the network to the other operating system
11:44<__diego__>but still a problem to share cpu / mem

11:45<weasel>cute.
11:45<dominick>__diego__, theoretically, if you want to share Memory or Processors, you will need some third hardware to manage and control them both over different motherboards. It is not possible!

11:46-!-floe [~flo@85.183.53.36] has joined #debian
11:47<__diego__>dominick: well, for processors maybe you can make something over the network (like distributed processing programs do, like distcc)
11:47<__diego__>for memory I dont have a good idea
11:48<dominick>__diego__, that would still require an operating system over the two CPUs!
11:48-!-CyberRat [~CyberRat@sindee.xs4all.nl] has joined #debian
11:49<__diego__>well, yeah, basically I dont mind having an OS in each computer , I just wanted to share everything (so I can have two screens and more cpu / mem power)
11:50<dominick>__diego__, if you wish to have an OS on both, then a software can do it, but there would be a little more lag! Not ideal!
11:50<__diego__>dominick: ok, lets say just to be able to use both screens with only one computer resources
11:50<dominick>__diego__, just as swap is slower than your memory, shared resources over the network/cable would be worse!
11:50<weasel>what you want is very non-trivial
11:51<weasel>it can be done for applications that are specifically written with such an environment in mind,
11:51<weasel>but not in any general purpose way
11:51*dominick agrees with weasel
11:51<weasel>at least not yet. a significant amount of research is being sunk into this.
11:51<__diego__>weasel: so, at least Im not the only insane guy that wants to do it ;)
11:52<__diego__>there is a hope :D
11:52<dominick>__diego__, take for example VMWare Server. It runs on one CPU and can be accessed by a number of CPUs connected over network!
11:52<weasel>for a workstation? yes, you are :)
11:52-!-komputes [~komputes@64.34.151.178] has joined #debian
11:52<weasel>what you want relates to high performance computing clusters
11:52<__diego__>well, yeah, vmware has that nice windows seamless mode
11:52<__diego__>and you can take a window out of the computer to your other screen
11:53<__diego__>that would be so nice :D
11:53<weasel>maybe you only want synergy. or simply use X.
11:53<__diego__>weasel: but synergy just shares keyboard / mouse ... what about taking an xterm to the other screen
11:53<__diego__>even it would run on the other computer

11:54<__diego__>I can only make it larger, but I want two
11:56<__diego__>unless you know how to send another screen from the vga / hdmi output and not the one you are seeing :D

12:04<__diego__>dominick: I'll try to see that, I only found a mirroring option :( maybe Im missing something
12:04<Zzz>Hi. is there a tool/package/script which can give me the usergroupname given a GID (not parsing the /etc/group file)?
12:04<Zzz>something like: getgrgid

14:14<litherum>well, the /usr/lib/update-notifier-apt_check.py script shows packages which would be installed with an apt-get upgrade, but doesn't show packages which would be installed with an apt-get dist-upgrade
14:14<Jesse_>Wouldn't it better to install Testing? Squeeze is "Freezing"
14:14<litherum>i added a command line flag, --dist-upgrade, to also show these packages

14:15<jordanm>litherum: I would file a wishlist bug against the package, include your patch, and tag the bug as "patch"
14:15<jordanm>litherum: you can use "reportbug" to do this
14:15<litherum>i attempted to to this with the reportbug tool, but the tool didn't appear to do anything. Is there a web interface to reporting these bugs?
14:16<jordanm>litherum: no. check your mailserver logs to see what the problem was
14:16<jordanm>litherum: or use --mua or -o to send using your normal email client
14:17<litherum>ah, okay. I'll look into that
14:17<jordanm>litherum: well, I guess you could say gmail or any other webmail is a "web interface" for it :)
14:17<jordanm>its just an email to control@bugs.debian.org
14:17<jordanm>s/control/submit/
14:17<litherum>why don't i use the tool to generate the email, and then send it myself?
14:17<jordanm>litherum: you can do that using the -o option for reportbug
14:18<litherum>alright, i'll do that. thanks a bunch.

19:14<retrospectacus>!blender
19:14<dpkg>blender is, like, a free (GNU GPL) cross plaform 3D creation suite, allowing fully integrated modeling, animation, rendering, post production and interactive 3D creation and playback. It is also a scanline renderer with nearly ray-traced quality. http://www.blender.org/ #blenderchat and #blenderqa on irc.freenode.net.
