05:15<d0cA>hi, my debian install seems to be really broken since i've upgraded to squeeze (about a month ago)
05:15<d0cA>but i just don't know how to identify where the problem is
05:16-!-mode/#debian [+l 419] by debhelper
05:16<d0cA>i am running awesome window manager on an apple macbook pro using an amd64 kernel
05:16<d0cA>and X just seems to hang really frequently, such that i either can't use the keyboard, can't use the mouse, or can't use either
05:17<mitology>my lingue is italy
05:17<d0cA>i had originally the nouveau driver, then i changed to nvidia, but it hasn't got any better
05:17<mitology>my lingue it's italy
05:17<d0cA>does anyone have any ideas about how i can locate where the problem might be, and file an appropriate bug?
05:18<mitology>io sono italiano
05:19<ompaul>d0cA: look in your .xsession-errors your syslog and places like that see if anything jumps out at you
05:19-!-jibel [] has joined #debian
05:20<jm_>other things to do is to check if computer is accessible remotely when that happens
05:20<mitology>io sono italiano ma non sò l'inglese a parte poche cose mi potete aiutare?
05:21<ompaul>d0cA: as jm_ says
05:21<dpkg>Ciao, vai su #debian-it per ricevere aiuto in italiano. Italian Speakers: Please use #debian-it, there you will get much more help.
05:21<twb>I can *almost* grok that
05:21<d0cA>jm_: so you mean if i can access via ssh at those times?
05:21<mitology>ok tanke
05:21<jm_>d0cA: for example, or at least ping it
05:22<d0cA>hmm... ok, i will see if i can figure that out
05:22<d0cA>i mean, i will need to set up another computer
05:22<d0cA>there do seem to be lots of errors in .xsession-errors tho, so that was a helpful pointer
05:23<ompaul>d0cA: just for fun if you use an external mouse or keyboard .... just unplug them and plug them in, I have seen this but never been able to localise it on x86
05:23<d0cA>although i'm not sure they're related, as i'm now doing a 'tail -f .xsession-errors' and it's not picking anything up in the hangs
05:23<d0cA>ompaul: yeah, i've already tried that, it doesn't make a difference
05:24<ompaul>d0cA: if the box hangs then you are interested in the contents of that file
05:24-!-CNerone [] has joined #debian
05:24*d0cA trundles off to find another computer to check external access...
05:24<ompaul>d0cA: log in at a terminal after the box gets rebooted if that is what you have to do :)

08:52<pipe>What is this whichcraft. Connecting to||:80... failed: Connection refused.
08:54<locklace>!connection refused
08:54<dpkg>When a TCP connection (e.g. telnet somehost 80) gives the error "connection refused", it means that either the service in question is not running on the specified IP address at all (e.g. apache has died), or that a firewall has rejected your SYN packet and sent back a rejection packet to you. It's a VERY CLEAR, EXPLICIT error message and ALWAYS means one of those two things.
08:54<pipe>Oh really

12:31<dpkg>[fakeraid] a term used for controller cards that advertise RAID functionality that is NOT supported by a hardware chip for parity. Most of these have only a BIOS. For use with Debian systems, it is suggested that you do not set a RAID in the BIOS and don't use dmraid, just use regular software RAID instead; ask me about <md>.
12:31<mikee>I've heard a bit about "fake raid" - but am not sure it really applies here. This is a new Asus mother board running i3 and it says it truly supports RAID 0, 5, 10

12:32<kop>mikee: You're better off with software raid, imo, unless you've another controller handy that's compatible with your hardware for when your controller dies. Otherwise your data all goes away.

12:33<kop>mikee: Sounds right to me. I'm not a real raid expert. (hot pluggable is cool)
12:34<EmleyMoor>mikee: The installer is good at helping set up RAID (and LVM)

14:25<jhutchins_lt>ottoshmidt_: Unlike other distros that release on a regular schedule, Debian releases when the set of packages frozen for release has eliminated enough bugs to be considered stable.
14:25<jhutchins_lt>ottoshmidt_: Scheduled releases have led other distros to release some very badly broken software - this is one of the reasons Mandriva has failed.

14:26<ottoshmidt_>jhujhiti, yeah i noticed that drawback when i was using ubuntu
14:27<jhutchins_lt>ottoshmidt_: Once the bugs are fixed and testing is released as stable, a new snapshot of sid will become testing and start the process of working out more bugs.
14:27<jhutchins_lt>Meanwhile, stable still gets patches, bugfixes, and backports.
14:27<kop>ottoshmidt_: See and wait for the green line to go to 0.
