00:07<lmartin1992>I've sort of got kerberos logins working. Users (non-root) are able to login with kerberos credentials. Root has choice of kerberos credentials or local credentials. However, I prefer local. Problem is that it asks for kerberos credentials, then local. I'd like to have it where it will ask once for a password with it = pam. And then it would test password against keberos first, then locall shadow/passwd file (soon to be ldaped I
00:07<lmartin1992>hope).
00:07<lmartin1992>Is there a way this is to be done that I'm just failing to get?

03:19<daenney>jais: usually, to join a linux client in a windows/samba domain you need to create the necessary DNS-recrods first, configue nsswitch.conf and samba.conf with the settings and then issue 'net ads join'
03:20<jais>this for ads to linux
03:20<daenney>yeah I get that but it emulates a windows active directory so the same should apply
03:21<jais>these things not working in samba4
03:21<jais>dns is working properly
03:22<daenney>to be honest I'm guessing you're doing something wrong because it's working just fine at work
03:22<jais>and also windows client is working fine

03:30<mattcen>Hi all. I'm installing Squeeze, and have 2 hard drives each with 2 raid partitions on them (i.e. sd[ab]1 make up md0, and sd[ab]2 make up md1). md0 contains a single ext3 partition for /boot, and md1 contains several LVM LVs, one of which is /. (Layout here: http://pastebin.com/4JkPCams).

03:31<mattcen>I'm installing Grub2, but last time I tried this (this is my second attempt, and I accidentally blew away /boot when trying to rectify the first one), it eventually loaded grub, but apparently couldn't find the kernel. Has anybody got experience with this sort of setup actually working?
03:31<mattcen>I'm currently at the stage in D-i where it wants me to install GRUB.

03:32<Newbumz>So I have a HP laptop with a drive I am having installing windows on ( Not my comp or choice in OS ) Install hangs during install so I think it might be a bad drive. Anyways there is no HP software to test drive and the Western Digital Diags won't load for some reason. Is there something I can do with my linux CDs to test other then run a one pass shred on the drive to test. Sorry to bother but I am out of ideas.

03:36<mattcen>Newbumz: You may be able to make use of SMART to run a couple of other tests; I don't use SMART much, so can't be of much help there, but there are tutorials everywhere.
03:38<daenney>mattcen: yes, I had a similar setup on my server
03:39<daenney>grub-install detected everything correctly here and booted without problems from md0 which containeed /boot
03:39<mattcen>Hmmm. I might try once more then. You used GRUB 2?
03:39<daenney>grub2 that is
03:39<mattcen>OK.
03:39<daenney>grub1 fails miserably at booting from softraid
03:39*mattcen proceeds with his installation by selecting GRUB2 as a boot loader.
03:40<daenney>just make sure the mount-points are correct after that it should autoconfigure itself
03:40<mattcen>I think the last install attempt I tried grub1 first, then when it failed to install in the MBR I switched to grub2; it might've gotten confused
03:41-!-vizor [~vizor@93.85.172.114] has joined #debian
03:41<daenney>last time I used that setup was about 3 weeks ago when I installed a server, it worked fine, which kind of shocked me because I expected shit hitting the fan trying to boot from softraid
03:41<mattcen>Heh
03:42<mattcen>I had a small suspicion it might've been a bug that in Squeeze that hasn't been squashed yet (and at this point in time I didn't see the point in installing Lenny)
03:42<daenney>then only bug I had with squueze' DI was that even before installing the basesystem it was complianing that setup couldn't continue because grub was not installed but that seems to have been fixed
03:44<daenney>the only thing that I might want te report a bug about is that grub-installer, if run from a USB-stick, selects the first availalbe disk and write the MBR to it which turned out to be the usb-stick instead of the HDD's :P
03:44<mattcen>Ah look at that, it all appears to have worked this time :-). It did however complain about GRUB failing to read (fd0), which it shouldn't even be trying to do
03:44<daenney>another nice thing about grub2, it will install the mbr on both disks of the md0/riad-set
03:44<daenney>raid*
03:44<daenney>so no need to dd that over
03:44<daenney>mattcen: just disable floppy in bios, it's what I always do :P
03:45<mattcen>Ah really? I didn't realise that. I manually reran the GRUB part of D-i with sda and sdb.

03:52<Newbumz>So sorry one last time. Is there a way to check drive competency through linux, without using manufacturers diags?
03:52<mattcen>Newbumz: Did you investigate SMART?
03:53<mattcen>Great, so it looks like DI ignored my request to create a secondary user with Sudo access, *and* didn't set a root password :S
03:53<Newbumz>Matcenn: Smart was disabled in bios
03:53-!-cahoot [~radix@82.183.196.76] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:53<Newbumz>Or is there another way to check smart?
03:54<mattcen>Newbumz: any reason you can't enable it?
03:54<mattcen>I don't know if it needs to be enabled in the BIOS for Linux to read it, but smartmon-tools definitely supports SMART
03:55<Newbumz>Mattcen: Would I get any info if I turned it on now? I thought it only reported on startup for base issues. The drive isn't fully dead, I think it is just a couple sectors if it is not something odd like HD controller.
03:57<mattcen>Newbumz: Start at this page: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6983. You might need to skip to page 2 to get to the commands you need, but it will give you an idea of what SMART does.

08:07<ompaul>anotherdebianusr: anotherdebianusr nothing because (A) sudo is not the usual therefore would break, and apt-get show is not a command and why less, apt-cache show package-name and it is one package so your question does not make too much sense, apt-cache search foo | less well then that might be better in a simple bash script, such as : cat > foo1 #!/bin/bash >> apt-cache search $1 | less and then chmod +700 that script for the user
08:07<ompaul>the >> being for new line

11:15<astho>so, basically my xorg.conf is very basic and i dont know how to configure it for my eee 900a
11:15<astho>i only get 800x600, for example
11:15<jhutchins_lt>lili: You're sure you want to format it?
11:16<jhutchins_lt>astho: There are pages about debian on eee pc's on the debian wiki and elsewhere.
11:16<jhutchins_lt>astho: Generally current versions of xorg do not need conf files.

11:17<lili>jhutchins_lt:Yes,It`s blue screen error even i ghost it...
11:17<cthuluh>Xorg should pick the highest available resolution
11:18<astho>if i try to run xrandr i only get 800x600
11:18<jhutchins_lt>lili: I would format it with the windows installer, but ntfsprogs/mkfs.ntfs would also do it.
11:18<astho>i have a 900a so higher resolutions should be supported
11:19<astho>all i did was "aptitude install xserver-xorg fluxbox"
11:20<jhutchins_lt>astho: Sounds like you do not have the driver for your GPU, the wiki pages cover that.

14:34<topro>hi, since replacing my wireless dsl router with a fresh installed debian squeeze box configured as dsl router (using shorewall, bind9) some internet pages won't load any more (i.e slashdot.org). the problem is not firewall related, nor does it seem to be related to my local named.
14:35<topro>I'm not getting any information in syslog, replacing nameserver to opendns did not change a thing. disabling ipv6 in the router's kernel as well as in bind9 didn't do the job. where should I keep looking at?
